Book Sailing to the Holy Land

Download or read book Sailing to the Holy Land written by Daniel Mirkin and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2018 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, unlike most studies dealing with the Crusaders' voyages by sea across the Mediterranean and their arrival at the shores of the Levant, looks at this feat from a seaman's point of view. To this end, it examines the types of ships, the sails and rigging that were used at the time, drawing on the author's personal experience and knowledge of the wind regime of the region. It also tackles the problems of transporting cargo, humans and horses, and the management of large fleets and their navigational difficulties. The book also deals with the question of landing on the flat coast of Palestine. It looks into the connection between seaside Crusader castles and the sea at their foot, taking as a case study the mooring basin below the Apollonia-Arsuf castle. This examination includes under-water digging and sub-bottom profiling using special equipment, and reveals interesting finds which call for further research. --Publisher's website.

Th at venture became an epic journey, as this retired Indiana governor embarked on what would be a solo, 30,000-mile, six-year sailing trip. With virtually no previous sailing experience, he and his thirty-foot sailboat, the CILIN II, traveled around the world. In this travel memoir, a chronicle fi lled with danger and adventure, Whitcomb narrates the details of his exploits on the seas and in ports from Greece, to the Canary Islands, Antigua, Panama, Australia, and many points in between. He describes what can happen to a sailboat in distress and the consequences when a boat runs aground or is snagged in a fi shing net. A story of the joys and frustrations of sailing, Cilin II: A Solo Sailing Odyssey recounts one mans realization of a dream and demonstrates his courage, endurance, and the lessons learned from meeting new people, seeing new places, and experiencing new ideas. Its a story about a thirst for excitement and world exploration that both begins and ends in the hills of southern Indiana.

Book The Hospitallers and the Holy Land

Download or read book The Hospitallers and the Holy Land written by Judith Bronstein and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new appraisal of the Order of the Hospitallers, showing how they were responsible for the survival of the Christian settlement in the East. The Order of the Hospital of St John was among the most creative and important institutions of the Middle Ages, its history provoking much debate and controversy. However, there has been very little study of the way in which it operated as an organisation contributing to the survival of the Christian settlement in the East, a gap which this book addresses. It focuses on the impact of the various crises in the East upon the Order, looking at how it reactedto events, the contributions that western priories played in the rehabilitation of the East, and the various efforts made to restore its economic and military strength. In particular, the author shows the key role played by the papacy, both in the Order's recovery, and in determining the fate of the crusader states. Overall, it offers a whole new perspective on the connections between East and West. JUDITH BRONSTEIN gained her Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story of sailing ships has been written primarily for the general reader, in the hope that the sons and daughters of a naval nation, and of an Empire that stretches beyond the seas, may find therein a record of some interest and assistance in enlarging and systematising their ideas on the subject, especially as regards the ships of earlier centuries. I trust that both the yachtsman and sailorman will find in these pages something of the same exiting pleasure which has been mine in tracing the course of the evolutions through which their ships have passed. A well written and beautifully illustrated historical account that starts with the early Egyptian ships from 6000 BC and covers the development of sailing ships until the beginning of the 20th century. Reprint of the original edition from 1909.

Book The Crusades and the Expansion of Catholic Christendom 1000 1714

Download or read book The Crusades and the Expansion of Catholic Christendom 1000 1714 written by John France and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-02-01 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crusades and the Expansion of Catholic Christendom, 1000-1714 is a fascinating and accessible survey that places the medieval Crusades in their European context, and examines, for the first time, their impact on European expansion. Taking a unique approach that focuses on the motivation behind the Crusades, John France chronologically examines the whole crusading movement, from the development of a ‘crusading impulse’ in the eleventh century through to an examination of the relationship between the Crusades and the imperialist imperatives of the early modern period. France provides a detailed examination of the first Crusade, the expansion and climax of crusading during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and the failure and fragmentation of such practices in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Concluding with an assessment of the influence of the Crusades across history, and replete with illustrations, maps, timelines, guides for further reading, and a detailed list of rulers across Europe and the Muslim world, this study provides students with an essential guide to a central aspect of medieval history.
