Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would a unique group of IBM Corporation bachelors choose to leave good stateside jobs and risk their lives to work in a war zone? What are their stories during and after the war? This book describes a U.S. military sponsored mission, gives insight into the business side of war and relates the adventures of dedicated professionals. Read about how data processing was used to monitor and manage the air and ground war. This is the story of IBMs role in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War and of the men who laid their lives and careers on the line to support a war that was fought with the help of extensive onsite data processing. Approximately 250 IBM wild ducks were handpicked for these overseas assignments. They worked with, lived with and played with the military while installing and servicing IBM equipment utilized by all services throughout South Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. Some IBMers remained overseas after the war, some brought Vietnamese brides home and some returned to traditional IBM careers. All felt a deep patriotic duty to the United States and its intended role in Southeast Asia. They all learned about wartime chaos, danger, love, life and death. IBMs mission escalated and de-escalated in parallel with that of the U.S. forces. By 1973 most US Nationals had withdrawn along with the militarys computing equipment. In 1975 the author took part in an interesting but failed effort to assist IBM Vietnamese employees escape the communists during the Fall of Saigon. The story of how our own US Embassy held these IBMers hostage in Saigon is told for the first time.

Book excerpt: Three vast oceans, two young men and one dubious idea - to sail around the world. When a sailboat barely bigger than a bathtub pottered into the English Channel, James and Tom began the adventure of a lifetime. In their little boat Blue Eye they set sail, ladened with the notion that happiness and freedom loitered just over the horizon. And yet as they journeyed between continents and across oceans, they found they were still anchored to their old unsatisfied selves. Hampered not only by the storms of the Atlantic Ocean and the pirates of the Red Sea, the craving nature of the human mind also threatens their bid to circumnavigate the world. From the Caribbean to the Suez Canal, James and Tom chase one sunset after the next, convinced a treasure trove of fulfilment lies waiting beyond the horizon. What will it take for them to discover that the sea is not always bluer on the other side? Hooked on the Horizon is Tom Dymond's travel memoir of sailing Blue Eye around the world. If you like being transported across oceans, escaping to far-flung paradises, and finding humour and philosophy in between, then you'll love the story of Blue Eye's adventure.

Book Sailing to the Edge of Time

Download or read book Sailing to the Edge of Time written by John Kretschmer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Kretschmer is sailing's practical philosopher – as much a doer as a thinker. And that is the overarching theme of this chronicle of a sailing life. Often amusing, sometimes poignant, occasionally terrifying but always inspiring, his deeply personal account is a welcome reminder of the good life waiting at sea. With hundreds of thousands of nautical miles under his keel, John's adventures have taken him several times around the world, with challenging crossings of the Atlantic and the Pacific, a narrow escape from a coup in Yemen, an unlikely deliverance from a coral reef off Belize as well as more serene, introspective passages where trade winds are blowing and stories are flowing. His crew has included CEOs, actors, writers, teachers, kids – in essence, everyone. John's narrative is interwoven with practical tips and advice in seamanship, but also, and just as importantly, his hard-won insights about making the most of our lives. He truly believes we find out who we really are, and what we are capable of, far from the shackles of land, when we find a place where time changes shape – days may merge into one another, but minutes are memorable. To live adventurously is to live more fully, and that is the life John Kretschmer continues to live. In this book he shares his simple profundities that will inspire those who live to sail, and those seeking something more rewarding from life.
