Book excerpt: USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFRs) are scientific treasures, providing secure, protected research sites where complex and diverse ecological processes are studied over the long term. This book offers several examples of the dynamic interactions among questions of public concern or policy, EFR research, and natural resource management practices and policies. Often, trends observed – or expected -- in the early years of a research program are contradicted or confounded as the research record extends over decades. The EFRs are among the few areas in the US where such long-term research has been carried out by teams of scientists. Changes in society’s needs and values can also redirect research programs. Each chapter of this book reflects the interplay between the ecological results that emerge from a long-term research project and the social forces that influence questions asked and resources invested in ecological research. While these stories include summaries and syntheses of traditional research results, they offer a distinctly new perspective, a larger and more complete picture than that provided by a more typical 5-year study. This collection of papers (PSW-GTR-237) summarizes the state of the science in some topics relevant to this forest management approach, presents case studies of collaborative planning efforts and field implementation of these new practices, and clarifies some of the concepts presented in GTR 220. It also describes a method for assessing forest heterogeneity at the stand level using the Forest Vegetation Simulator and a new geographic information system tool for project-level planning that classifies a landscape into different topographic categories. While this collection of papers presents information and applications relevant to implementation, it does not offer standards and prescriptions. Forest management should be flexible to adapt to local forest conditions and stakeholder interests. This report does, however, strive to clarify concepts and present examples that may improve communication with stakeholders and help build common ground for collaborative forest management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of snags by tree species in the eastern Sierra Nevada of California generally reflects the associated timber type. Where present, however, lodgepole pine (Pinus conrorta Dougl.) forms a large proportion of the snags present. Few snags of any species were present in the Jeffrey pine (P. jeffrryi Grev. & Balf. in A. Murr.) timber type in a study at Sagehen Creek Basin, in Nevada County. Simple regression analysis showed weak but significant relationships between snag density and canopy height, canopy cover, and slope. Multiple regression analysis were also weak, but revealed that snag density increased as size of natural openings increased. These results indicate that most snags in the study area were formed by the action of water (i.e., meadows, creeks) and fire. Thus, managers could concentrate snag surveys (and protective measures) near water and natural openings. Management of riparian areas is especially important because such areas are usually readily accessible to the public (e.g., fuelwood cutters). Aerial photography should be useful in locating areas of highest snag density; regression analysis appears to be of marginal usefulness.
