Book Managing Confined Spaces in Construction

Download or read book Managing Confined Spaces in Construction written by James Rogers and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many publications available related to confined spaces, however there are very few that are dedicated to the management of confined spaces in the construction industry. Even the ones that address construction tend to do so in the context of tank and silo construction, or retrofits at existing facilities where spaces are well defined and controlled. This book was designed to address the confined spaces that can be found on many typical construction sites. The ones that probably haven't been identified or classified yet because they didn't exist when the project started. The ones that get constructed without consideration of what work remains that needs to be done inside. The ones that many people in the construction industry do not recognize as confined spaces, such as manholes, catch basins, attics and pits. Both safety professionals and construction managers will find this book useful as it details the identification and management of these spaces and conditions. In May 2015, the United States Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued new rules for the Construction Industry that changed the way confined spaces must be managed on construction sites in the United States. This new set of regulations, known as 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA, formally introduces the concept of a Permit Required Confined Space to the construction industry and defines the conditions that mandate a formal and documented process that must be followed to enter these spaces. This book takes a common-sense approach to the management of these spaces on construction sites. It gives a detailed explanation of the OSHA rules and regulations and compares them to other regulatory texts including the Canadian standards and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines. Case studies are presented to illustrate both the importance and the complexities of managing confined spaces and confined space entries. Suggestions and examples are provided to assist construction companies with the development and implementation of a safety management program for confined spaces while discussing best practices versus regulatory minimum standards.Chapters include information on classifying confined spaces, communicating hazards to employees, training entry teams, establishing stand-by rescue plans, and the identification and avoidance of hazards commonly found in confined spaces on construction sites. Appendices include discussion on the use and maintenance of atmospheric testing equipment as well as the entire regulatory text contained in 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA.

Updated as of May 29, 2018 OSHA is adding a new subpart to provide protections to employees working in confined spaces in construction. This new subpart replaces OSHA's one training requirement for confined space work with a comprehensive standard that includes a permit program designed to protect employees from exposure to many hazards associated with work in confined spaces, including atmospheric and physical hazards. The final rule is similar in content and organization to the general industry confined spaces standard, but also incorporates several provisions from the proposed rule to address construction-specific hazards, accounts for advancements in technology, and improves enforceability of the requirements. This book contains: - The complete text of the Confined Spaces in Construction (US Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulation) (OSHA) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section

Book Safety and Health in Confined Spaces

Download or read book Safety and Health in Confined Spaces written by Neil McManus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 1412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety and Health in Confined Spaces goes beyond all other resources currently available. International in scope, the 15 chapters and 10 appendices cover every facet of this important subject. A significant addition to the literature, this book provides a confined space focus to other health and safety concepts. Confined spaces differ from other workspaces because their boundary surfaces amplify the consequences of hazardous conditions. The relationship between the individual, the boundary surface, and the hazardous condition is the critical factor in the onset, outcome, and severity of accidents in these workspaces. The author uses information about causative and other factors from analysis of fatal accidents to develop a hazard assessment and hazard management system. He provides a detailed, disciplined protocol, covering 36 hazardous conditions, that addresses all segments of work--the undisturbed space, entry preparation, work activity, and emergency preparedness and response--and illustrates how to use it. Safety and Health in Confined Spaces gives you the tools you need for preventing and responding to accidents.

Book Work Health and Wellbeing in the Construction Industry

Download or read book Work Health and Wellbeing in the Construction Industry written by Helen Lingard and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a wide range of topics relating to the health and wellbeing of the construction workforce. Based on more than two decades of work examining various aspects of workers’ health and wellbeing, the book addresses a key topic in construction management: how the design of work environments, construction processes and organisation of work impact upon construction workers’ physical and psychological health. Occupational health is a significant problem for the construction industry. However, the subject of health does not receive as much attention in occupational health and safety research or practice as the subject of safety. Traditional management approaches (focused on the prevention of accidents and injuries) are arguably ill-suited to addressing issues of workers’ health and wellbeing. This book seeks to explain how workers' health and wellbeing are impacted by working in the construction sector, and suggest ways in which organisations (and decision makers within them) can positively shape workplaces and practices in ways that better support construction workers to maintain healthy and productive working lives. Including chapter summaries and discussion questions to encourage student readers to reflect on and formulate their own viewpoints about the issues raised in each chapter, the book has the potential to be used as a textbook in undergraduate or postgraduate occupational health and safety, or construction management courses dealing with occupational health and safety. It could also be used as supplementary recommended reading in undergraduate or postgraduate programmes in architecture, engineering or management.
