Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Stimulus offers a thorough exploration of Jerusalem's role in the formation and formulation of Christian art in Rome during the fourth and fifth centuries. The visual vocabulary discussed by Galit Noga-Banai gives an alternative access point to the mnemonic efforts conceived while Rome converted to Christianity: not in comparison to pagan art in Rome, not as reflecting the struggle with the emergence of New Rome in the East (Constantinople), but rather as visual expressions of the confrontation with earthly Jerusalem and its holy places. After all, Jerusalem is where the formative events of Christianity occurred and were memorialized. Sacred Stimulus argues that, already in the second half of the fourth century, Rome constructed its own set of holy sites and foundational myths, while expropriating for its own use some of Jerusalem's sacred relics, legends, and sites. Relying upon well-known and central works of art, including mosaic decoration, sarcophagi, wall paintings, portable art, and architecture, Noga-Banai exposes the omnipresence of Jerusalem and its position in the genesis of Christian art in Rome. Noga-Banai's consideration of earthly Jerusalem as a conception that Rome used, or had to take into account, in constructing its own new Christian ideological and cultural topography of the past, sheds light on connections and analogies that have not necessarily been preserved in the written evidence, and offers solutions to long-standing questions regarding specific motifs and scenes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did early Christian Rome deal with the fact that Christ was never there? Sacred Stimulus is about the effect Jerusalem had on the formulation of Christian art in Rome during the fourth and fifth centuries. It deals with the visual Christianization of Rome from an almost neglected perspective: not in comparison to pagan art in Rome, not as reflecting the struggle with Constantinople, but rather as visual expressions of the idea of Jerusalem and its holy sites and traditions.

Book Dishonest Behavior From Theory to Practice

Download or read book Dishonest Behavior From Theory to Practice written by Guy Hochman and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapidly growing field of behavioral ethics shows that dishonest acts are highly prevalent in all walks of life, from corruption among politicians through flagrant cases of doping in sports, to everyday slips and misdemeanors of ordinary people who nevertheless perceive themselves as highly moral. When considered cumulatively, these seemingly innocuous and ordinary unethical behaviors cause considerable societal damage and add up to billions of dollars annually. Research in behavioral ethics has made tremendous advances in characterizing many contextual and social factors that promote or hinder dishonesty. These findings have prompted the development of interventions to curb dishonesty and to help individuals become more committed to ethical standards. The current e-book includes studies that test and advance current theory and deepen our understanding of the cognitive and physiological processes underlying dishonest behavior, discuss possible implications of findings in behavioral ethics research for real life situations, document dishonest behavior in the field and/or directly examines interventions to reduce it.

Book Holy Land Archaeology on Either Side

Download or read book Holy Land Archaeology on Either Side written by AA. VV. and published by Edizioni Terra Santa. This book was released on 2020-11-10T10:24:00+01:00 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of the volume may be a little perplexing: Archaeology on Either Side. But on either side of what? The picture we chose for the front cover might give an indication of the answer. This image shows two sides of the River Jordan – the Israeli side and the Jordanian side – both part of the Holy Land! Or we might understand the “either side” of our topic in another way, that is, archaeology both as the study of artifacts and archaeology as the study of literary sources. In the contributions the reader will find all these topics and much more: essays on excavations or archaeological findings in the Holy Land as defined above, and essays on literary sources linked to the history of the ancient Near East, especially in the time of the Christian/Common Era (CE). The book is made up of three main sections: “Excavations and Topographical Surveys”; “Architecture, Decorations, and Art”; “Epigraphy and Sigillography”. Some articles touch on more than one specific section, so they may be found between sections.

Book Migration and Diaspora Formation

Download or read book Migration and Diaspora Formation written by Ciprian Burlăcioiu and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of migration for Christianity as a world religion during the last two centuries has drawn considerable attention from scholars in different fields. The main issue this book seeks to address is the question whether and to what extent migration and diaspora formation should be considered as elements of a new historiography of global Christianity, including the reflection upon earlier epochs. By focusing on migration and diaspora, the emerging map of Christianity will include the dimension of movement and interaction between actors in different regions, providing a more comprehensive ‘map of agency’ of individuals and groups previously regarded as passive. Furthermore, local histories will become parts of a broader picture and historiography might correlate both local and transregional perspectives in a balanced manner. Behind this approach lies the desire to broaden the perspective of Ecclesiastical History – and religious history in general – in a more systematic manner by questioning the traditional criteria of selection. This might help us to recover previously lost actors and forgotten dynamics.

Book Principles of Psychology

Download or read book Principles of Psychology written by Jacob Robert Kantor and published by . This book was released on 1924 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1924, this book--as the title suggests--provides an overview of the principles of psychology. Written at a time when psychology was a "youthful" science and the debate over the field's status as a natural science (or even as a science at all) was relatively fresh, Principles of Psychology represents a stock-taking of sorts--a survey of the ends achieved and the newer trends of development in psychological research. The author's aim is to present and study psychological phenomena as actual, observable events consisting of the responses of psychological organisms on the one hand, and the stimulus objects or conditions which interact with them on the other. By dispensing with animatistic conceptions and intangible psychic phenomena that previously dominated the field, the author hopes to bolster psychology's position as a member of the family of natural sciences. According to the author, only by avoiding meticulously all powers or functions--whether considered as psychic or biological--which do not represent actual observable phenomena or interpretations derived from such observations, can psychology as a science be erected upon a firm foundation. It is to this end that the author presents 15 chapters on a wide range of topics that represent the core concepts and principles of psychology: The Domain, Method, and Development of Psychology; The Primary Data of Psychology; The Psychological Individual or Personality; The Psychological Organism or Personality in Action; The Simpler or Foundation Behavior Segments; The Nature of Basic Conduct and How it is Developed; The Development and Operation of Complex Human or Societal Conduct; Attention Behavior as the Actualization of Stimuli; The Nature of Sensing and Perceiving; Implicit Action as Responses to Absent Stimuli Objects; Association as a Fundamental Type of Psychological Activity; The Primary Internal Character of Feeling Reactions; Knowing as Determining and Orientating Conduct; The Nature of Volitional Conduct; and, finally, The Integrative Nature of Habit Reactions.
