Book Sacred Shadows and Latent Light

Download or read book Sacred Shadows and Latent Light written by Dustin Lawrence Lovell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-12-27 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When college students Elliot Fleming and Vesta Lloyd agree to join English Professor Rydar Colson’s production of Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part 1 and Part 2, they do not know what to expect. Sacred Shadows and Latent Light follows Elliot and Vesta as they prepare for what they assume will be little more than an enriching extracurricular challenge. However, when student reporter Ermine Jackson goes beyond his journalism professor’s instruction to lobby the university for a second director, he initiates a campaign to cancel the plays and remove Shakespeare from the university curriculum—and Colson from campus. Between Colson’s production and Jackson’s crusade, the campus steadily divides, leading to unexpected allegiances, betrayals, questionable accusations, and threats of physical violence. Throughout their time admiring, questioning, resenting, and defending Colson and his production, the characters discover when and how to stand up for their convictions, all the while examining different views on the extent of free speech, the place of the canon in higher academia, the safety and representation of women in society, the growth of “cancel culture” on a changing university campus, and how much is truly involved in what and how one reads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How might life look if we lived as though eternity is now? Many of us have fallen into a trap, thinking that God and His kingdom are “up there somewhere” as if He and His dwelling place are distant in reach and in time. But, Jesus came teaching a very different reality. To every physical aspect of creation, there is a spiritual counterpart. When God created the world, He called it very good. He declared it to be sacred by placing His own image in the world through humanity. He charged humanity to fill the earth, to take dominion, to declare who God is. So, the here and now, this present reality…this is sacred. The tangible is not evil; it is a gift from God. And yet, it’s not the end all be all. It is just the beginning, a glimpse, a shadow of the greater reality. Here we live in the sacred shadow, but one day, when we pass through the veil of perception which blurs our present reality, when we step over the thread of time which is a boundary for now, but won’t be a boundary forever and certainly isn’t a boundary for God, we will step out of the sacred shadow and into the sacred substance. In Courtney Cohen’s latest book, The Sacred Shadow, explore what reality truly is, encounter the near presence of God, challenge your perception of eternity, and discover the sacredness that exists now during our brief time spent in this shadow-land. What Leaders Are Saying About The Sacred Shadow… “The Sacred Shadow is the perfect book to read when trying to make sense of the world we live in. It invites us to discover and understand that eternity is our real home, and we are just passing through earth, pilgrims headed to our glorious promised land. I urge you to read on. And, if you’re like me and you get excited at the thought of the supernatural heaven, the spirit world, and holy mysteries being revealed, you will likely call The Sacred Shadow one of your favorites.” Christine D’Clario International Worship Leader & Award-Winning Artist Author of Prodigal Heart “How does an infinite God go about communicating eternal spiritual Truth to the limited hearts and minds of the people He loves? How does a wise father teach young children his ways? In The Sacred Shadow, Courtney Cohen has put her finger on the method of God: hiding every secret and each mystery like Easter Eggs in tufts of grass – barely hidden in the shadows, where they can be found by those who seek them. Every shadow is cast by a great light shining upon a solid reality, and Cohen insightfully redirects our eyes from each shadow to the solid Truth it represents – and to the Great Light that shines behind each of them. Prepare yourself to gather treasures, because Cohen is leading us on the hunt, and there is wisdom to share for those who seek it.” Pastor Zach Neese Worship Pastor, Gateway Church Author of How to Worship a King

Download or read book Sacred Buildings written by Rudolf Stegers and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-05-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The building of religious structures represents a rare opportunity for the architect to concentrate on the creation of volume, space, and form. Sacred architecture is far less determined than other building tasks by functional requirements, norms, and standards. As a rule, it is free to unfold as pure architecture. Thus in design terms this building task offers enormous freedoms to the architect. At the same time, however, the special atmospherics of sacred spaces call, on the part of the architect, for a highly sensitive treatment of religion and the relevant cultural and architectural traditions. In a systematic section, this volume introduces the design, technical, and planning fundamentals of building churches, synagogues, and mosques. In its project section, it also presents about seventy realized structures from the last three decades. Drawing upon his in-depth knowledge of the subject and his many years of publishing experience, the author offers a valuable analysis of the conceptual and formal aspects that combine to create the religious impact of spaces (e.g., the ground plan, the shapes of the spaces, the incidence of light, and materiality).

Book Meeting the Shadow on the Spiritual Path

Download or read book Meeting the Shadow on the Spiritual Path written by Connie Zweig and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to rekindling spiritual inspiration after betrayal and disillusionment • Explains why we are drawn to charismatic leaders, what we unconsciously give away to them, and how to reclaim our inner spiritual authority • Explores how to recover from spiritual abuse or betrayal by a teacher or group, including breaking free of denial, projection, and dependency using psychology and shadow-work • Extends #MeToo into the spiritual domain and tells the stories of contemporary clergy and spiritual leaders who acted out their shadows in destructive ways, leaving their followers traumatized and lost Within each of us is a spiritual longing that prompts us to unite with something greater than ourselves, to awaken to our unity with all of life. Yet, no matter the spiritual path we choose, we inevitably encounter our own shadow, those unconscious aspects of ourselves that we suppress or deny, or the shadows of our teachers and their secret desires about money, sex, and power. Meeting the shadow can derail the journey, but, according to Connie Zweig, Ph.D., we can learn to recover from loss of faith and move from spiritual naivete to spiritual maturity. Calling on us to expand our vision of religious and spiritual life—and our vision of awakening—to include the human shadow, Zweig examines the yearning that sets us on the spiritual path, showing how it can lead to ecstatic, transcendent experiences or to terrible suffering by projecting it onto an authoritarian teacher, priest, or guru who abuses power. She tells the stories of renowned teachers—Sufi poet Rumi, Hindu master Ramakrishna, and Christian saint Catherine of Siena—whose lives unfolded as they followed their spiritual yearning. And she tells the cautionary tales of contemporary teachers of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Catholicism, who acted out their shadows in devastating ways, leaving their followers traumatized and lost. She explains how meeting the shadow is a painful but inevitable stage on the path to a more mature spirituality. She describes how to use spiritual shadow-work to separate from abusive teachers, reclaim inner spiritual authority, and heal from betrayal. With guidance for both inspired and disillusioned seekers, the author explores how to navigate the narrow path through the darkness toward the light, rekindle the flame of longing, and once again engage in fulfilling spiritual practice.

Book Sacred Dance Meditations

Download or read book Sacred Dance Meditations written by Carla Stalling Walter and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieve balance, connect to Spirit, and tap into the sacred power of dance with 365 daily movement meditations. Throughout human history, people all over the world have recognized dance as an age-old yet timeless connection to Spirit. In celebration, to mark moments of change, and in times of despair, dance has been used to seek the Divine, connect with the Earth, and call into being the sacred energy we each possess within ourselves. In Sacred Dance Meditations, Carla Walter, PhD, offers readers 365 dances--one for every day--rooted in traditions from around the globe. From Polynesia to Peru, each dance is different in origin and technique but connected in common purpose: as sacred conduits for hope, love, connection, community, and spirituality. Walter provides a theme each new day, drawn from mystical and spiritual principles that originate from pre-colonial religious traditions. Descriptions, video links, accessibility modifications, and invitations for deeper reflection allow the reader to engage their Spirit fully with the sacred power of dance, carrying it in their heart as they move throughout each day. Readers who want a more active style of meditative practice will discover powerful regenerative healing and a new way to awaken. Broken up day by day and month by month, Sacred Dance Meditations makes it simple and gratifying to practice each day's dance and fulfill its intended theme. Readers can begin at any "point of entry" section, and work their way throughout the year with a time commitment of just ten to twenty minutes a day. Importantly, each dance is designed to supplement any existing (or non-existent) religious or spiritual practice, allowing all to tap into the Divine through the spirit of dance.

Download or read book The Gardnerian Book of Shadows written by Gerald Gardner and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magus leaves circle by the doorway, goes to Postulant, and says, "Since there is no other brother here, I must be thy sponsor, as well as priest. I am about to give you a warning. If you are still of the same mind, answer it with these words: 'Perfect Love and Perfect Trust.'" Placing the point of the sword to the Postulant's breast, he says, "O thou who standeth on the threshold between the pleasant world of men and the domains of the Dread Lords of the Outer Spaces, hast thou the courage to make the Assay? For I tell thee verily, it were better to rush on my weapon and perish miserably than to make the attempt with fear in thy heart." Postulant: "I have two Passwords: Perfect Love and Perfect Trust." Magus drops the sword point, saying, "All who approach with perfect love and perfect trust are doubly welcome." Going around behind her, he blindfolds her, then putting his left arm around her waist and his right arm around her neck, he pulls her head back, says, "I give you the 3rd password, a Kiss to pass through this dread Door," and pushes her forward with his body, through the doorway and into the circle. Once inside, he releases her saying, "This is the way all are first brought into the circle." Magus closes the doorway by drawing the point of the sword across it three times, joining all three circles, saying, "Agla, Azoth, Adonai," then drawing three pentacles to seal it. Magus guides Postulant to south of altar, and whispers, "Now there is the Ordeal." Taking a short piece of cord from the altar, he ties it around her right ankle, saying, "Feet neither bound nor free." Taking a longer cord, he ties her hands together behind her back, then pulls them up, so that the arms form a triangle, and ties the cord around her neck, leaving the end dangling down in front as a Cable Tow. With the Cable Tow in his left hand and the sword in his right hand, the Magus leads her sunwise around the circle to the east, where he salutes with the sword and proclaims, "Take heed, O Lords of the Watchtowers of the East, (name), properly prepared, will be made a Priestess and a Witch." Magus leads her similarly to the south, west, and north, making the proclamation at each quarter. , clasping Postulant around the waist with his left arm, and holding the sword erect in his right hand, he makes her circumambulate three times around the circle with a half-running, half-dancing step. He halts her at the south of the altar, and strikes eleven knells on the bell.
