Book Sacred and Mythological Animals

Download or read book Sacred and Mythological Animals written by Yowann Byghan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the household cat to horses that can fly, a surprisingly wide range of animals feature in religions and mythologies all across the world. The same animal can take on different roles: the raven can be a symbol of evil, a harbinger of death, a wise messenger or a shape-changing trickster. In Norse mythology, Odin's magical ravens perch on his shoulders and bring him news. This compendium draws upon religious texts and myths to explore the ways sacred traditions use animal images, themes and associations in rituals, ceremonies, texts, myths, literature and folklore across the world. Sections are organized by the main animal classifications such as mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians and insects. Each chapter covers one significant grouping (such as dogs, cats or horses), first describing an animal scientifically and then detailing the mythological attributes. Numerous examples cite texts or myths. A final section covers animal hybrids, animal monsters and mythical animals as well as stars, constellations and Zodiac symbols. An appendix describes basic details of the religions and mythologies covered. A glossary defines uncommon religious terms and explains scientific animal names.

Trees have the ability to help us reach wholeness if we learn their wisdom and integrate it into our lives. This abecedarian--a book whose contents are in alphabetical order--explores the spiritual growth that is possible by reflecting on the wisdom of woody plants, which help humans experience the divine. In these pages you can explore trees from Acacia to Zaqqum. For each of the forty entries, the author presents a text identifying the tree, a reflective study, a question for journaling or personal meditation, and a concluding prayer. Some trees you may have heard about, and some may be new to you. The spiritual life is enhanced by the trees that surround and share the earth with us while also disclosing the divine to us.

Book Understanding Apples

Download or read book Understanding Apples written by J. S. Moore and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2011-10-29 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Apples is a collection of short pieces about Northeast Tennessee, notably the Long Island community of Kingsport - once a locale known for violence and bootlegging. The Island was actually a sacred ground to the Cherokee Nation and the Yuchi who settled there hundreds of years prior. Before 1776 and the Battle of Long Island Flats it was said that no man could be killed on Long Island. But later the chiefs of all seven clans gathered and "signed" a treaty with the white man, giving up not only hundreds of thousands of their acreage, but millions - including the sacred ground known as Long Island. Because the chieftains' decision was not unanimous among the elders or their sons a powerful curse was placed upon the hallowed ground: No man would ever find peace there. A mere window of events is shared within the pages of this book that offer only a glimpse of what life was like thereafter.

Book Sacred Seeds

  • Author : Edward McLean Test
  • Publisher : University of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2019-01-01
  • ISBN : 1496212916
  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book Sacred Seeds written by Edward McLean Test and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than five hundred years after the fact, present-day writers still use hyperbolic adjectives to describe the “discovery” of the Americas. Columbus’s crossing of the Atlantic—and the age of exploration that ensued—dramatically and forever changed the early modern world. The societies, economies, cultures, arts, and burgeoning sciences of Europe were quickly transformed by the ongoing encounter with the New World. The meeting of the New and the Old Worlds, however, was more than a meeting of disparate civilizations. It was also a confluence of exciting and often surprising associations that continually created new interfaces between materials and knowledge. The Western and Eastern Hemispheres, brought together by sailing ships for the first time on a large scale, helped create the global landscape we take for granted today. Central to this formative moment in global history were New World plants. The agriculture of indigenous peoples mythically and materially shaped English society and, subsequently, its literature in new and startling ways. Sacred Seeds examines New World plants—tobacco, amaranth, guaiacum, and the prickly pear cactus—and their associated Native myths as they moved across the Atlantic and into English literature. Edward McLean Test reinstates the contributions of indigenous peoples to European society, charting an alternative cultural history that explores the associations and assemblages of transatlantic multiplicity rather than Eurocentric homogeny.

Book Apples and Oranges

  • Author : Bruce Lincoln
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2018-08-23
  • ISBN : 022656407X
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Apples and Oranges written by Bruce Lincoln and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparison is an indispensable intellectual operation that plays a crucial role in the formation of knowledge. Yet comparison often leads us to forego attention to nuance, detail, and context, perhaps leaving us bereft of an ethical obligation to take things correspondingly as they are. Examining the practice of comparison across the study of history, language, religion, and culture, distinguished scholar of religion Bruce Lincoln argues in Apples and Oranges for a comparatism of a more modest sort. Lincoln presents critiques of recent attempts at grand comparison, and enlists numerous theoretical examples of how a more modest, cautious, and discriminating form of comparison might work and what it can accomplish. He does this through studies of shamans, werewolves, human sacrifices, apocalyptic prophecies, sacred kings, and surveys of materials as diverse and wide-ranging as Beowulf, Herodotus’s account of the Scythians, the Native American Ghost Dance, and the Spanish Civil War. Ultimately, Lincoln argues that concentrating one's focus on a relatively small number of items that the researcher can compare closely, offering equal attention to relations of similarity and difference, not only grants dignity to all parties considered, it yields more reliable and more interesting—if less grandiose—results. Giving equal attention to the social, historical, and political contexts and subtexts of religious and literary texts also allows scholars not just to assess their content, but also to understand the forces, problems, and circumstances that motivated and shaped them.

Book A Druid s Herbal of Sacred Tree Medicine

Download or read book A Druid s Herbal of Sacred Tree Medicine written by Ellen Evert Hopman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-06-09 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at the history, herbal uses, and spiritual aspects of the sacred trees in the ancient Celtic Ogham Tree Alphabet • Details the 20 trees of the ogham alphabet and their therapeutic and magical virtues • Examines the Forest Druid practices associated with each tree as well as the traditional uses in Native American medicine • Describes the Celtic Fire Festivals and how each tree is featured in these holy days • By the author of A Druid’s Herbal for the Sacred Earth Year The Druids used the ancient Ogham Tree Alphabet to work magic and honor the dead, surrounding each letter with medicinal and spiritual lore. Poets and bards created a secret sign language to describe the letters, each of which is named for a tree or a plant. For centuries this language was transmitted only orally in order to protect its secrets. Combining her extensive herbal knowledge and keen poetic insight, Ellen Evert Hopman delves deeply into the historic allusions and associations of each of the 20 letters of the Ogham Tree Alphabet. She also examines Native American healing methods for possible clues to the way ancient Europeans may have used these trees as healing agents. Druidic spiritual practices, herbal healing remedies, and plant lore are included for each tree in the alphabet as well as how each is used in traditional rituals such as the Celtic Fire Festivals and other celebrations. Hopman also includes a pronunciation guide for the oghams and information on the divinatory meanings associated with each tree.

Book Tree Poghams Poems inspired by the wisdom of the ancient Ogham tree alphabet

Download or read book Tree Poghams Poems inspired by the wisdom of the ancient Ogham tree alphabet written by Edward Durand and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems inspired by the wisdom of the ancient Celtic Ogham tree alphabet. Ogham is the ancient alphabet of the Druids. Each letter is a tree and each tree contains much lore and wisdom, mythology, magic and medicine. I put that tree lore into rhyme and rhythm just as the ancient Druids preserved their knowledge such as laws orally by putting them into rhyme and rhythm in the form of poetry so that they could be memorised. The ancient bards found deep wisdom in nature and communicated it in magical poems. This book keeps that lore alive with poetry that works on the deepest levels, delving into the magic, medicine and inspiration of our standing still friends. The trees were revered by the Druids as conscious beings that had the knowledge, materials and cures they needed. Each tree has a unique energy which can bring particular blessings.

Book The Origins of the World s Mythologies

Download or read book The Origins of the World s Mythologies written by E.J. Michael Witzel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable book is the most ambitious work on mythology since that of the renowned Mircea Eliade, who all but single-handedly invented the modern study of myth and religion. Focusing on the oldest available texts, buttressed by data from archeology, comparative linguistics and human population genetics, Michael Witzel reconstructs a single original African source for our collective myths, dating back some 100,000 years. Identifying features shared by this "Out of Africa" mythology and its northern Eurasian offshoots, Witzel suggests that these common myths--recounted by the communities of the "African Eve"--are the earliest evidence of ancient spirituality. Moreover these common features, Witzel shows, survive today in all major religions. Witzel's book is an intellectual hand grenade that will doubtless generate considerable excitement--and consternation--in the scholarly community. Indeed, everyone interested in mythology will want to grapple with Witzel's extraordinary hypothesis about the spirituality of our common ancestors, and to understand what it tells us about our modern cultures and the way they are linked at the deepest level.
