Book The Photograph as Contemporary Art Fourth World of Art

Download or read book The Photograph as Contemporary Art Fourth World of Art written by Charlotte Cotton and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of the definitive title in the field of contemporary art photography by one of the world’s leading experts on the subject, Charlotte Cotton. In the twenty-first century, photography has come of age as a contemporary art form. Almost two centuries after photographic technology was first invented, the art world has fully embraced it as a legitimate medium, equal in status to painting and sculpture. The Photograph as Contemporary Art introduces the extraordinary range of contemporary art photography, from portraits of intimate life to highly staged directorial spectacles. Arranged thematically, the book reproduces work from a vast span of photographers, including Andreas Gursky, Barbara Kasten, Catherine Opie, Cindy Sherman, Deana Lawson, Diana Markosian, Elle Pérez, Gregory Halpern, Lieko Shiga, Nan Goldin, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Pixy Liao, Susan Meiselas, and Zanele Muholi. This fully revised and updated new edition revitalizes previous discussion of works from the 2000s through dialogue with more recent practice. Alongside previously featured work, Charlotte Cotton celebrates a new generation of artists who are shaping photography as a culturally significant medium for our current sociopolitical climate. A superb resource, The Photograph as Contemporary Art is a uniquely broad and diverse reflection of the field.

Book excerpt: "Made in Germany offers a comprehensive survey of contemporary art in Germany. At its core are fifty-two young artists living and working in Germany, about half of whom are from abroad and all of whom are among the promising newcomers of the international art scene. In looking at questions of artistic identity, Made in Germany no longer simply considers the birthplace and biography of the artists, but also the context of where the work itself is produced. This is the first time that modern German art has been clearly examined to this great an extent as a weave of national particularities and cultural exchange." "This volume provides concise insights into the complete oeuvres of all the artists, as well as an informative comparison of the individual artists and each of their different regional and biographical contexts."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Window in Photographs

Download or read book The Window in Photographs written by Karen Hellman and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographers have been irresistibly drawn to the window as a powerful source of inspiration throughout the history of the medium. As one of the first camera subjects, the window is literally and figuratively linked to the photographic process itself. By bringing together key works, arranged thematically rather than chronologically, and presenting pairings within broader stylistic movements, this volume examines the motif of the window as a symbol of photographic vision. The Window in Photographs includes more than eighty color plates spanning the history of photography, all drawn from the J. Paul Getty Museum’s permanent collection. The theme is presented in a wide range of contexts, from one of the earliest images by William Henry Fox Talbot or Julia Margaret Cameron’s 1864 allegorical use of the motif, to works by members of the Photo-Secession, including Gertrude Käsebier and Fred Holland Day. The documentary thread of the street photographer can be followed in Eugène Atget’s record of the old quartiers of Paris and later twentieth-century photographs by William Eggleston, Walker Evans, and Lee Friedlander. Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand chose to utilize the theme of the window for its more graphic possibilities. More recently, photographers Shizuka Yokomizo and Gregory Crewdson explored conceptual aspects of the window to investigate themes of voyeurism and invented narrative, while Uta Barth and Yuki Onodera created more abstract visions.

Book Cultures of Violence in the New German Street

Download or read book Cultures of Violence in the New German Street written by Patricia Anne Simpson and published by Fairleigh Dickinson. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In post-Wall Germany, violence—both real and imagined—is increasingly determining the formation of new cultural identities. Patricia Anne Simpson’s book focuses on the representation of violence in three youth subcultures often characterized by aggression as they enact a rivalry for supremacy on the new German “street”—the author’s operative metaphor to situate the cultural discourse about violence. The selected literary texts, films, and music exemplify the urgent need for a sustained debate about violence as an aspect of both social reality and the national imaginary. Simpson’s study discloses the relationship between narratives of violence and issues of immigration, ethnic difference, and poverty. Her lucid readings examine the ways in which violence is grounded in the asphalt of Germany’s new street. This interdisciplinary study identifies the motivations, decisions, and consequences of violent acts and the stories that convey them. Simpson draws examples from popular genres and subcultures, including punk, hip hop, and skinhead sounds, styles, and politics. With theoretical sophistication and analytical clarity, the author locates the contested territory of the street within larger European contexts of violence while paying careful attention to the particularities of German history. She reveals new insights into the construction of citizenship, masculinity, and contemporary ethics. In addition, Simpson demonstrates the importance of concepts embedded in the representation of violence, including revised definitions of heroism, community, and evolving ideas of fraternity, family, and home.

Download or read book Daguerreotypes written by Lisa Saltzman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days one can hardly say anything about art without confronting the freighted status of the photograph. Many critics have written about the idea of photography by other means or art after photography. And many famous artistsamong them Gerhard Richter, Gillian Wearing and Thomas Struth--have stretched the idea of the truth-value of the photograph by claiming to make actual photographs in other materials, such as paint or video. Saltzman is interested in how photography has functioned to secure identity in the modern period and the implications of that history for us today. While Saltzman s purpose is to look at contemporary adaptations of photography, the story she tells begins even earlier than the invention of the photograph. It starts with the story of Martin Guerre (nee Daguerre) and the idea of what the image may have held as a guarantor of identity in the early modern period. In this way Saltzman establishes a broad, deep historical frame before delving into the art of the present. Each chapter covers a different medium ranging from video, graphic novels, and literature to film. Along the way, she takes on figures of unstable identity fugitive subjects to wit, the mysterious Martin Guerre, Blade Runners, replicants, Henriette Barthes, and W.G. Sebald s characters. She also confronts a range of contemporary critics, artists, and knotty debates about veracity, uncertainty and identity that began to circulate in the nineteenth century with the invention of photography."

Book excerpt: "On Blinking" opens a dossier on seeing. It looks not only to the epistemological sense of what it means to see or the hermeneutical sense of what is the meaning of that which is seen but attends to various sites of knowledge-photography, literature, and philosophy. And in doing so, it questions the privileging of presence and sight in Western thought. Thus, this book, through the essays- "Emerging Sight, Emerging Blindness" (Brian Willems); "Augen, Blicke, Stätten" (Julia Hölzl); "At the risk of love" (Jeremy Fernando); and "Suspended in a Moving Night: Photography, or the Shiny Relation Self-World" (Jessica Aliaga Lavrijsen)- attempts to address the question what is seeing.
