Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Despair to Faith analyzes the spiritual insights and writings of Sren Kierkegaard. Christopher B. Barnett orients readers to Kierkegaards grounding in the Christian spiritual tradition and his authorial stress on themes like upbuilding, spiritual journey, and faith. Barnett maintains that Kierkegaards spirituality is best understood through the various pictures that populate his authorship. These icons of faith, represent and communicate what Kierkegaard sees as the fulfillment of Christian existence. Barnett shows how Kierkegaards writings serve to illuminate and to deepen one's relationship with the divine.

Book Kierkegaard

Download or read book Kierkegaard written by Stephen Backhouse and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible, expert introduction to one of the greatest minds of nineteenth century. Whether you're completely new to him, or if you're already familiar with his work, Kierkegaard: A Single Life presents a fresh understanding of his life and thought. Kierkegaard was a brilliant and enigmatic loner whose ideas permeated culture, shaped modern Christianity, and influenced people as diverse as Franz Kafka and Martin Luther King Jr. Though few people today have read his work, that lack of familiarity with the real Kierkegaard is changing with this biography by scholar Stephen Backhouse, who clearly presents the man's mind as well as the acute sensitivity behind Kierkegaard's books. Drawing on biographical material that has newly come to light, Kierkegaard: A Single Life introduces his many guises—the thinker, the lover, the recluse, the writer, the controversialist—in prose as compelling and fluid as a novel and pursues clarity to long-standing questions about him: What made this Danish theologian so controversial and influential? Why were so many people drawn to his books, even if they didn't understand what they were reading? Can his complicated relationship with the Church and religion be untangled? Or, for that matter, what about his complicated—at times almost paradoxical—relationship with every sphere of life from politics to poetry? To be considered everything from a great intellect to a dandy, from a martyr to a "false messiah" is no mean feat, and this biography sheds light on Søren Kierkegaard as he was with empathy and humor. Included is an appendix presenting an overview of each of Kierkegaard's works, for the scholar and lay reader alike.

Book The Prayers of Kierkegaard

Download or read book The Prayers of Kierkegaard written by Soren Kierkegaard and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-05-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soren Kierkegaard's influence has been felt in many areas of human thought from theology to psychology. The nearly one hundred of his prayers gathered here from published works and private papers, not only illuminate his own life of prayer, but speak to the concerns of Christians today. The second part of the volume is a reinterpretation of the life and thought of Kierkegaard. Long regarded as primarily a poet or a philosopher, Kierkegaard is revealed as a fundamentally religious thinker whose central problem was that of becoming a Christian, of realizing personal existence. Perry D. LeFevre's penetrating analysis takes the reader to the religious center of Kierkegaard's world.

Book Soren Kierkegaard

Download or read book Soren Kierkegaard written by Melville Chaning-Pearce and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not a criticism; it pretends to be no more than an exposition of Kierkegaard’s main message, his revolutionary reconception of Christian truth, to our own age. I have tried therefore, as far as possible, to let him tell his own tale in his own terms and to add only such comments as seemed necessary to relate his word to our conditions or to show what seem to me to be the considerations necessary for a balanced criticism.

Book The Burden of Soren Kierkegaard

Download or read book The Burden of Soren Kierkegaard written by Edward J. Carnell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the wide influence of Soren Kirkegaard's writings upon modern Christian thought is now generally recognized, the insights of the Danish knight of faith have often been misread and misinterpreted by those who seek to canonize their own theologies by appealing to Kierkegaard. The fact that modern Christian thought owes much to Kierkegaard does not mean that modern Christian thought speaks fo Kierkegaard at all points. In this short study, Carnell has allowed Kierkegaard to speak for himself, thus providing a valuable glimpse into the thought of the great Danish philosopher-theologian. Restricting the number of critical comments (including a short closing chapter entitled Yes and No), Carnell has written a short survey of Kierkegaard's thought with generous documentation from his writings. The two major theses which the author discusses are existential living and Truth is subjectivity. He elucidates the latter thesis by explaining the four affirmative elements in Kierkegaard's idea of subjective truth: faith, suffering, hope, and love. Carnell concludes by stating that because Kierkegaard strove to enrich the body of Christ by developing a fresh interpretation of spiritual truth, his books should be read, and read again. This volume will do more than encourage readers to do that; it will help them when they do.

Book Soren Kierkegaard and the Common Man

Download or read book Soren Kierkegaard and the Common Man written by Jorgen Bukdahl and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-03-10 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1961, this study challenges the stereotype of Kierkegaard as being socially aloof and politically conservative. Bukdahl does a through job of contextualizing Kierkegaard in nineteenth-century Denmark, shedding light on his relationships with his family, various religious groups, and the leading intellectual figures of his time. At the same time, Kierkegaards fundamental interest in the plight of "the common man" is revealed both from his writings and his social encounters. In addition to crafting a fine translation, Bruce Kirmmse has expanded the usefulness of Bukdahl's work by including a significant biographical introduction, informative notes identifying events and figures referenced in the text, and a guide pointing readers to English translations of all of Kierkegaard's writings.

Book Kierkegaard

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julia Watkin
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2001-03-01
  • ISBN : 144117589X
  • Pages : 143 pages

Download or read book Kierkegaard written by Julia Watkin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) has been proposed as the 'father' of existentialism, as a forerunner of post-modernism and as the proponent of a purely humanistic religiosity. According to Julia Watkin all of these approaches suppress the reality of Kierkegaard as a Christian thinker, albeit one of a uniquely challenging cast who saw the need to treat Christianity as a personal existential adventure in which one is not afraid to risk oneself. In Kierkegaard, Watkin uses Danish critical sources to classify the legendary thinker as one of a radical Christian persuasion.Kierkegaard raised and addressed vital philosophical and ethical-religious questions about existence in a way that continues to be relevant across disciplines, generations, and cultures. This book distinctly and simply introduces Kierkegaard to new readers as a Christian religious thinker.

Book A Short Life of Kierkegaard

Download or read book A Short Life of Kierkegaard written by Walter Lowrie and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small, insignificant-looking intellectual with absurdly long legs, Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) was a veritable Hans Christian Andersen caricature of a man. A strange combination of witty cosmopolite and melancholy introvert, he spent years writing under a series of fantastical pseudonyms, lavishing all the splendor of his magnificent mind on a seldom-appreciative world. He had a tragic love affair with a young girl, was dominated by an unforgettable Old Testament father, fought a sensational literary duel with a popular satiric magazine, and died in the midst of a violent quarrel with the state church for which he had once studied theology. Yet this iconoclast produced a number of brilliant books that have profoundly influenced modern thought. In this classic biography, the celebrated Kierkegaard translator Walter Lowrie presents a charming and warmly appreciative introduction to the life and work of the great Danish writer. Lowrie tells the story of Kierkegaard's emotionally turbulent life with a keen sense of drama and an acute understanding of how his life shaped his thought. The result is a wonderfully informative and entertaining portrait of one of the most important thinkers of the past two centuries. This edition also includes Lowrie's wry essay "How Kierkegaard Got into English," which tells the improbable story of how Lowrie became one of Kierkegaard's principal English translators despite not learning Danish until he was in his 60s, as well as a new introduction by Kierkegaard scholar Alastair Hannay.

Book S ren Kierkegaard

Download or read book S ren Kierkegaard written by Alastair Hannay and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Danish philosopher, theologian, and author Søren Kierkegaard is widely considered to be one of the most important and wide-ranging religious thinkers of the modern age. He is known as the father of existentialism, but his work was also influential on theories of modernism, theology, Western culture, church politics, and the Christian faith. His wit, imagination and humor have inspired a generation of followers, from Woody Allen to Franz Kafka. But how did this inattentive schoolboy rise to critique the work of great thinkers such as Hegel and the German romantics? Who was the real (and unusual) person writing behind so many pseudonyms? And in what way are Kierkegaard’s concepts still relevant today? In this absorbing new biography, Alastair Hannay unravels the mystery of Søren Kierkegaard’s short but momentous career. Looking at both Kierkegaard the thinker and the person, Hannay describes this controversial figure’s key concepts and major works alongside the major incidents in his private and public life. From Kierkegaard’s longing for selfhood as expressed at the age of twenty-two, to a self-provoked spat with a satirical weekly that has caused him to be caricatured to this day, to a verbal assault on the Church in the months prior to his early death at the age of forty-two, Søren Kierkegaard is the fascinating story of a man destined to become a thorn in the side of society.
