Book excerpt: The book is about history of Lithuania and Russia in Medieval Ages, about writing chronicles, and meanings of words used at the time. It is an analysis of over 30 volumes of the Full Collection of Russian Chronicles, that dates back to 855 A.D. The chronicles in Medieval Ages were written in Slavic using Cyrillic alphabet by monks of the Russian Orthodox Church and in Old German and Medieval Latin by monks of the Teutonic Order. Full texts from Lithuanian in Old Belorussian tongue and excerpts in translations from Russian and Teutonic are included. The book starts in 13th century Lithuania—the time Lithuania emerged as state. The analysis of chronicles takes its reader through said above records made by Russian Orthodox monks (855 - 1453 A.D.), and to records and documents made by Catholics—Teutons and Poles (1191 - 1434 A.D.), Lithuanian (1345 - 1446), and ends with remarks about errors in dictionaries. The book describes the order in which chronicles were copied and therefore contains solutions to unsolved problems of sequence. The book contains graphs, tables, maps, that clarify explanations, a dictionary with almost 2200 entries and an Indices of Names, Tribes, Geographical Places, in which the Author provided extended information about the people, tribes, and places.

Book excerpt: This book, situated within the framework of Comparative Interactional Linguistics, explores a family of fourteen discourse markers across the languages of Europe and beyond (Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian, Polish, Romani, Estonian, Finnish, Upper Saxonian and Standard German, Dutch, Icelandic, and Swedish), arguing that they go back to one, possibly two, particles: NU/NÅ. Each chapter analyzes the use of one of the NU/NÅ family members in a particular language, usually on the basis of conversational data, feeding into a comprehensive chapter on the structure, function, and history of these particles. The approach taken in this volume broadens the functional linguistic concept of ‘structure’ to include the sequential positioning of the particles and their composition, and the concept of ‘function’ to include the conversational actions performed in interaction. Employing conversation analytic methodology thus enables a study of the ways these particles acquire meaning within certain sequential and action environments -- both cross-linguistically and with regard to the grammaticization of the particles. All this sheds light on the borrowing patterns of NU/NÅ across the languages. With contributions by Peter Auer, Galina B. Bolden, Gonen Dori-Hacohen, Andrea Golato, Harrie Mazeland, Auli Hakulinen, Helga Hilmisdóttir, Leelo Keevallik, Hanna Lehti-Eklund, Anna Lindström, Yael Maschler, Yaron Matras, Gertrud Reershemius, Mirja Saari, Lea Sawicki, Marja-Leena Sorjonen, Heidi Vepsäläinen and Matylda Weidner.

Book Towards a History of Linguistics in Poland

Download or read book Towards a History of Linguistics in Poland written by E. F. K. Koerner and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from the names of Jan Baudouin de Courtenay (1845 1929), Miko?aj Kruszewski (1851 1887), and, later, Jerzy Kury?owicz (1895 1978), Polish linguists and Polish linguistics generally have been little known in the West. The first two were mentioned with approval by Saussure in an unpublished paper, and this reference was picked up by Roman Jakobson and others many years later. Kury?owicz, for his part, made himself well known in the West through his important work as Indo-Europeanist, even Semiticist, and as a general linguist. The present volume is a first attempt to broaden the perspectives on the Polish contribution to linguistics both inside and outside of Poland during the past centuries. Specialists in their respective fields contributed chapters on the origins and development of general linguistics (Z. W?sik), applied linguistics (F. Grucza), lexicology (T. Piotrowski), dialectology (St. Gogolewski), and onomastics (S. Gala), followed by five chapters presenting the theories of the arguably most remarkable Polish linguistic thinkers, from Baudouin de Courtenay (A. Adamska-Sa?aciak), Kruszewski (F. M. Berezin), and Kury?owicz (W. Smoczy?ski) to Miko?aj Rudnicki (1881 1978) and Ludwik Zabrocki (1907 1977) (both written by J. Ba?czerowski).Detailed individual bibliographies, a full index of names (with life dates of Polish linguists from the Renaissance to the present day), and a thorough index of subjects and terms make this volume an important reference tool for anyone wishing to acquaint himself with the rich heritage of Polish linguistic thought.

Book Criminality and Criminal Justice in Contemporary Poland

Download or read book Criminality and Criminal Justice in Contemporary Poland written by Konrad Buczkowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminality has accompanied social life from the outset. It has appeared at every stage of the development of every community, regardless of organisation, form of government or period in history. This work presents the views of criminologists from Central Europe on the phenomenon of criminality as a component of social and political reality. Despite the far advanced homogenisation of culture and the coming together of the countries that make up the European Union, criminality is not easily captured by statistics and simple comparisons. There can be huge variation not only on crime reporting systems and information on convicts but also on definitions of the same crimes and their formulations in the criminal codes of the individual European countries. This book fills a gap in the English-language criminological literature on the causes and determinants of criminality in Central Europe. Poland, as the largest country in the region, whose political post-war path has been similar to the other countries in this part of Europe, is subject to an exhaustive and original look at criminality as part of the political and social reality. The authors offer a contribution to the debate in the social and criminal policy of the state over the problems of criminality and how to control it.

This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book In Between Transversal Values in Contemporary Social Discourses and Culture

Download or read book In Between Transversal Values in Contemporary Social Discourses and Culture written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title concept ‘in-between’ (metaxu) refers to identity that remains in perpetual disjunction, dispersion and crisis. This book proves that ‘in-between’ is not an empty space, but a productive mode of creating new qualities, experiences, ideas and representations. The authors of individual chapters interpret selected aspects of metaxu in relevant to contemporary cultural communication areas, i.e. linguistic and more broadly semiotic, and make contemporary discourses the object of exploration. Most of the analyses are based on the Polish-language linguistic context; however, they refer to a universal perspective of culture and communication.
