Book The Rise and Fall of the Ottoman Empire

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of the Ottoman Empire written by Don Rauf and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruling from 1299 until 1922, the Ottoman Empire was one of the biggest and longest-lasting empires in history. Although weak leadership, a failing economy, and wars with neighboring Russia and other countries led to its decline, the empire left a lasting legacy for its arts, trade, government, and multiculturalism. This appealing volume chronicles the rise and decline of the Ottoman Empire, including its beginnings in nomadic cultures, its toppling of the Byzantine Empire, and its peak under Süleyman the Magnificent, as well as the various conflicts in which it was often embroiled.

Book excerpt: Sinan was the greatest architect of the Ottoman Golden Age - when the Empire reached its zenith of power and magnificence. His style marks the apogee of Turkish art and this volume is a magnificent testament to the achievement of a man who stamped his imprint on an entire culture Beginning as a military engineer and designer of fortifications, he was appointed Chief Imperial Architect in 1538. While Michelangelo was working on St. Peter's, Sinan completed the greatest of Turkish mosques, the Süleymaniye and the Selimiye. Under Süleyman the Magnificent and his successor Selim II, Sinan designed hundreds of buildings: mosques, palaces, tombs, mausolea, hospitals, schools, caravanserai, bridges, aqueducts and baths. As he himself said, 'with time each edifice became - with the help of Allah and thanks to the generosity and benevolence of the State - the very image of the world in the lands ruled by the Ottoman dynasty.' In his greatest works he adapted Byzantine and Islamic styles to produce something quite new: a centralized organization of absolute space unhindered by pillars or columns and covered by a soaring dome. An architect of genius in a dynamic new empire expanding into both Asia and Europe, he was a true man of the Renaissance. Opulent colour photographs, many taken specially by Ara Güler for this publication, pay tribute to the extraordinary space and light of Sinan's buildings. Texts by the most important specialists in this field complement the handsome visual material and offer new interpretations of Sinan's art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most powerful and recognizable empires to emerge from the Middle Ages is that of the Ottoman Turks. At its height, the Ottoman Empire controlled much of the Middle East and all of its trade routes, Asia Minor, parts of Europe, and all of North Africa through Algeria. This text follows the empire from its basis in the dynasty created by Othman in the early fourteenth century through its golden age under the leadership of three consecutive sultans (Bayezid II, Selim I, and Sleyman I the Magnificent) to its ultimate decline and slow burn into the early twentieth century.

Book A Short History of the Ottoman Empire

Download or read book A Short History of the Ottoman Empire written by Baki Tezcan and published by I. B. Tauris. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its height the Ottoman Empire embraced fifteen million people across three continents. The conduit - of people, ideas and commerce - between Europe and Asia for more than six centuries, the Ottoman imperium had by 1590 become one of the most powerful states in the world, expanding territorially and threatening Vienna in the West and wresting Baghdad from the Persians in the East. The story of its struggles against Byzantines (culminating in the shattering fall of Constantinople in 1453), Hungarians and Habsburgs is one of the defining narratives of European history. Showing why understanding the Ottomans, especially the important shared heritage of the Balkans and Anatolia, still matter, Baki Tezcan discusses the formation of the Ottoman state at the end of the thirteenth century; Ottoman genius under enlightened sultan Sleyman the Magnificent; military victories such as at Constantinople and Belgrade, and defeats on sea and land at Lepanto (1571) and Vienna. This timely survey explores government, economy, trade, religion and the arts up to the founding of modern Turkey in 1922.

Book Empire and Power in the Reign of S leyman

Download or read book Empire and Power in the Reign of S leyman written by Kaya Şahin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kaya Şahin's book offers a revisionist reading of Ottoman history during the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent (1520–66). By examining the life and works of a bureaucrat, Celalzade Mustafa, Şahin argues that the empire was built as part of the Eurasian momentum of empire building and demonstrates the imperial vision of sixteenth-century Ottomans. This unique study shows that, in contrast with many Eurocentric views, the Ottomans were active players in European politics, with an imperial culture in direct competition with that of the Habsburgs and the Safavids. Indeed, this book explains Ottoman empire building with reference to the larger Eurasian context, from Tudor England to Mughal India, contextualizing such issues as state formation, imperial policy and empire building in the period more generally. Şahin's work also devotes significant attention to the often-ignored religious dimension of the Ottoman-Safavid struggle, showing how the rivalry redefined Sunni and Shiite Islam, laying the foundations for today's religious tensions.
