Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ruth, a Bible Heroine and Other Stories: Told in the Language of Childhood While Is-ra-el was ruled by a judge whose name has not come down to us, a dearth came on the land of Ca-naan. And one of the Jews who dwelt in Bcth-le-hem, took his wife and his two sons and went to stay for a while in the land of Mo-ab. His wife's name was Na-o-mi. The man died while they were in Mo-ab, and in a few years each of the sons took him a wife. And their names were Or-pah and Ruth. At the end of ten years the sons died, and Na-o-mi and their wives dwelt in the land of Mo-ab. When Na-o-mi heard there was no lack of food in Is-ra-el, she made up her mind to go back to Beth-le-hem to live. She told Or-pah and Ruth of her plan, and said if they choose to stay in the land of Mo-ab, where they were born, they might do so. And they kissed her and wept and said they would go with her. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biblical story of Ruth celebrates the power to begin life anew, to gather what has been scattered, to glean what one needs. In this original approach to understanding an ancient love story, Jennifer L. Koosed crafts a multifaceted portrait of the Old Testament character of Ruth and of the demanding agricultural world in which her story unfolds. Highlighting the most complex aspects of the book—the relationships Ruth has with her mother-in-law, Naomi; sister-in-law, Orpah; future husband, Boaz; and infant son, Obed—Koosed explores the use of pairings to define Ruth's aspirational fortitude. Koosed also touches on the narrative's questions of sexuality, kinship, and law as well as the metaphoric activities of harvest that serve to advance the plot and illuminate the social and geographic context of Ruth's tale. From the private world of women to the public world of men, Koosed guides readers through the book of Ruth's revealing glimpses into the sociology of the ancient Hebrew world. The study concludes with a discussion of the postbiblical fascination with Ruth and her later representations in a variety of literary and visual media. Koosed's approach is eclectic, employing a host of methodologies from philology and theology to literature, folklore, and feminism. Thoughtful of the interests of both scholarly and lay audiences, Koosed presents inviting and compelling new insights into one of the Old Testament's most enigmatic characters.

Re(reading Ruth) demonstrates how careful attention to the book's structure, allusions, wordplay, and location in the canon can reveal the dynamic ways that it engages with other biblical stories and how that engagement shapes its message.

Download or read book Ruth Experiencing a Life Restored written by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-18 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every story is really God's story, even yours.A suffering nation, reeling from famine, judgment, and war, Israel was a dark and unfriendly home for most, particularly for a woman. Even more so for a widowed woman. Ruth's story begins in desolation. But as in every story whose Author is God, that desolation is not without a glimmer of hope. As you watch that glimmer of hope bloom into a dazzling display of grace, you'll understand why the book of Ruth is called, by some, the greatest love story of all time. But this love story is much less about romance and more about restoration. It's a story of how God can turn tragedy into joy, no matter how desperate our circumstances may seem. In this six-week study, explore the subject of restoration, walking verse by verse through the book of Ruth. With Scripture memory, daily study, and group discussion questions, this resource is ideal for both individual and group study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Ruth has been limited and constrained by biblical presentations and interpretations. For too many Christians, Ruth is only known for her "where you go I go" position and her capture of wealthy Boaz. She has been shaped by Christendom to be the epitome of purity that all females should emulate if they desire an honorable and wealthy man as Boaz. However, on closer examination, the steps of Ruth may not be suited for New Testament women. Was the purity of Ruth the key factor in her capture of Boaz? Or was it only a ploy by many in Christendom to ensure the purity of text. The Truth about Ruth fully examines each chapter and key verses to give needed insight lost to readers and hearers by the exclusion of critical contextual information. Eleven little-known or unexplored truths about Ruth are presented to ensure that the reader can factually determine whether Ruth's course of action is one that should be recommended for Christian females. Are the strategies used by Ruth to get her man suitable instruction to girl scouts, teens, and females in general? If not, why not? Is it possible that the ways of Ruth were simply the ways of women in general, with no connection to the attributes that promote purity and holiness? Could it be that the story of Ruth is more appropriate for instruction in how not to get a man rather than the prevailing opposite? Bringing no preconceived ideas to the text, readers will be able to release antiquated dating ideas and embrace the readily applicable truths about Ruth that are appropriate for Christian dating and release those that are antithetical to promoting meaningful relationships that are bound in Christian love and respect for each other.
