In particular, it will investigate how different waves of refugees contributed to the consolidation of one specific type of nationalism: the ethnic one.Next, the authors analyse the role of national narratives in the development of national identity. This interdisciplinary approach offers a more complete and analytical understanding of how narratives of national identity are produced, transmitted and finally consumed by the members of a nation.Also in this book, detailed theoretical rationale for the relationships between identification and threat perceptions is presented, exploring the issues related to causal direction and links to attitudes toward immigrants and immigration policies. Although having a national identity on its own is not troubling, possessing an inflated sense of national identity, referred to as national group narcissism, may lead to biased perceptions of intergroup relations.Following this, the authors describe three different types of artworks and the identities associated with each artist in order to reveal the complex process through which Korean identity is formed. This research identifies the first type of artist as one who left South Korea as an adult in order to be deterritorialized from the given territory, and the individual's Koreanness has been one rediscovered by dialectical play with the Other.Usage of the colonial discourse is proposed as a way to represent social relationships, providing additional opportunities for the analysis of the political situation in Russia. Thus, the work of contemporary intellectuals who identify themselves as "Russian nationalists" is analyzed. Conclusions are made regarding the fundamental conflictual nature of intellectuals.The construction of a unified Mexican national identity is depicted in the concluding chapter, in a territory originally divided by adversarial ethnic groups into one nation glued by a common language and history. The authors conclude that nationalism in Mexico must be understood within educational, historical and contextual influences to assess costs and benefits.

Book excerpt: The unresolved territorial dispute between Japan and Russia over the South Kuril Islands/Northern Territories remains the largest obstacle to concluding a peace treaty and fully normalising bilateral relations between the two nations. This book traces the evolution of transnational relations between subnational public authorities in Hokkaido and Sakhalin, examining the interrelationship between these ties and the Russo-Japanese territorial dispute. The book investigates why the development of Hokkaido-Sakhalin relations has failed to create, at the subnational level, an environment conducive to resolving (kankyo seibi) the South Kuril Islands/Northern Territories dispute. Brad Williams suggests that kankyo seibi has not worked primarily because Russia’s troubled transition to a liberal democratic market economy has manifested itself in ways that have ultimately increased the South Kuril Islands’ intrinsic and instrumental value for the Sakhalin public and regional elite. This in turn has limited the impact from the twin transnational processes of cultural and economic exchange in alleviating opposition to the transferral of these disputed islands to Japan. Drawing upon a wealth of primary and secondary sources from both countries, this book utilises levels of analysis and an analytical framework that incorporates national and subnational, as well as governmental and non-governmental forces to discuss a relatively unexplored aspect of Russo-Japanese relations. As such, Resolving the Russo-Japanese Territorial Dispute will appeal to students and scholars of Asian politics, international relations and post-communist states.

At its core, it traces the conscious and unconscious influence of this visual symbol through time. What began as the crucifixion of a Jewish troublemaker in Roman-occupied Judea in the first century eventually gave rise to a broad spectrum of readings of the instrument used to accomplish such a punishment, a cross. The author argues that Jesus was a provocative, grandiose masochist whose suffering and death initially signified redemption for believers. This idea gradually morphed into a Christian sense of freedom to persecute and wage war against non-believers, however, as can be seen in the Crusades ("wars of the cross"). Many believers even construed the murder of their savior as a crime perpetrated by "the Jews," and this paranoid notion culminated in the mass murder of European Jews under the sign of the Nazi hooked cross (Hakenkreuz). Rancour-Laferriere's book is expertly written and argued; it will be readable to a large audience because it touches on many areas of controversy, interest, and scholarship. The work is critical, but not unfair; it employs psychoanalysis, art history (the study of the symbol of the cross in works of art), religion and religious texts, and world history generally. The interweaving of these various themes is what gives this work its ability to draw in readers-and will ultimately be what keeps the reader interested through the conclusion.

It will appeal to anyone who has ever wondered, for example, about the flimsy scriptural basis of many beliefs about Mary; or the tendency of many mariologists to depict Mary as an incestuous "bride of Christ"; or the theological notion of Mary’s "loving consent" to her son’s crucifixion; or the idea that Mary was a "priest" officiating at the sacrifice of her son; or the unfortunate association of Mary with Christian anti-semitism; or the curious appeal of Mary to the terminally ill; and so on. Special attention is given to the psychology of representations of Mary, such as: the psychological basis for promoting Mary to the status of a "goddess"; the psychology of Mary’s compassion for her son at the foot of the cross; and the psychological conflict in Mary’s personal relationship with her son Jesus. These topics are admittedly diverse, but they all have long been on the minds of mariologists. The author takes a questioning approach to received wisdom about marian themes – including the assumption that one has to be a theist in order to understand the great appeal of Mary down the centuries. Indeed, Imagining Mary may be regarded as a first step in the direction of an atheist mariology.
