Book Rural and Regional Futures

Download or read book Rural and Regional Futures written by Anthony Hogan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture, mining and related rural industries have been central to the development of Australia’s economy. This book details the role that the Australian Government has played in the making of rural and regional Australia, particularly since World War II. The book reviews these policies and evaluates them with regards the commitments undertaken by the Government to contribute towards vibrant, rural communities. Policy areas addressed include agriculture, water, education, welfare and population, natural resource management, resource extraction, Indigenous and affairs, localism, rural research and regional innovation, Youth Affairs and the devolution of regional governance. Overall two distinct policy strategies can be observed: one wherein the government saw its role as part of the entrepreneurial state and a sector wherein government has increasingly taken itself out of industry development, leaving this role to the market. Having considered these strategies and their impacts, the book concludes that policy over the past 40 years has not in fact contributed to a more vibrant, prosperous rural and regional Australia. Rural and Regional Futures concludes with several chapters looking to the future. One chapter explores what the role of the state can be within a social market economy while the final chapter gives consideration to the initial steps rural communities will need to take to begin the process of revitalisation. While these materials present as a case study of developments in Australia, the policy shift from the Government as entrepreneur to a focus on markets is an international one and as such, the insights offered by this book will have wide appeal.

Book Natural Gain in the Grazing Lands of Southern Australia

Download or read book Natural Gain in the Grazing Lands of Southern Australia written by David Floyd Smith and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this text is that the introduction of agricultural and pastoral systems in Australia's temperate grazing lands has often created dynamic and sustaining ecosystems. The author argues that while these ecosystems are not native, and while they are not problem-free, they have made an immense contribution to the building of the country - largely in terms of increased soil fertility. This has been done by adding trace elements, superphosphate and legumes, thereby developing a new ecosystem, probably just as self-sustaining as the one it replaced.

Book Harnessing Cultural Capital for Sustainability

Download or read book Harnessing Cultural Capital for Sustainability written by Mawere, Munyaradzi and published by Langaa RPCIG. This book was released on 2015-06-20 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the basic component of any society's social security and sustainability is cultural capital and its ability to fully recognise diversity in knowledge production and advancement. However, with regard to African societies, since the dawn of racial slavery and colonialism, cultural capital ñ indigenous knowledge in particular ñ has iniquitously and acrimoniously suffered marginalisation and pejorative ragtags. Increasingly since the 1990s, cultural capital informed by African knowledge systems has taken central stage in discussions of sustainability and development. This is not unrelated with the recognition by America and Europe in particular of the central role that cultural capital could and should assume in the logic of development and sustainability at a global level. Unfortunately, action has often failed to match words with regard to the situation in Africa. The current book seeks to make a difference by exploring the role that African cultural capital could and should assume to guarantee development and sustainability on the continent and globally. It argues that lofty pan-African ideals of collective self-reliance, self-sustaining development and economic growth would come to naught unless determined and decisive steps are taken towards full recognition of indigenous cultural capital on the continent.

Book A Spirit of True Learning

Download or read book A Spirit of True Learning written by Matthew Jordan and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Written to commemorate the University of New England's fiftieth year as an independent institution, A Spirit of True Learning tells the story of the University's early struggles, its commitment to country students and the surrounding community, its rapid growth after autonomy, its development of a strong tradition of teaching and research, and its experiences over the last decade within the context of government reform and rationalisation." "This is also the story of a unique university. Like the Australian National University, UNE was founded during the great age of Australian nation-building and Keynesian optimism. Opened as an affiliate college of the University of Sydney in 1938, New England became autonomous in 1954. Its founders saw it as a deliberate attempt to bring the special advantages and the special problems of rural life in Australia under the spotlight of higher learning."--BOOK JACKET.
