Book Foundations of Governance

Download or read book Foundations of Governance written by Andrew Sancton and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-07-03 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Municipalities are responsible for many essential services and have become vital agents for implementing provincial policies, including those dealing with the environment, emergency planning, economic development, and land use. In Foundations of Governance, experts from each of Canada's provinces come together to assess the extent to which municipal governments have the capacity to act autonomously, purposefully, and collaboratively in the intergovernmental arena. Each chapter follows a common template in order to facilitate comparison and covers essential features such as institutional structures, municipal functions, demography, and municipal finances. Canada's municipalities function in diverse ways but have similar problems and, in this way, are illustrative of the importance of local democracy. Foundations of Governance shows that municipal governments require the legitimacy granted by a vibrant democracy in order to successfully negotiate and implement important collective choices about the futures of communities.

Book Canadian Municipal Government

Download or read book Canadian Municipal Government written by Kenneth G. Crawford and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1954-12-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The student who would understand the government of a country can only obtain a complete knowledge of it if he knows something of the government of its local subdivisions. Yet the Canadian student will find studies of Canadian local government almost non-existent. Similarly the citizen or municipal officer looking for details of the organization and operation of the several systems of local government in Canada needs, but has not yet had, one single source with all the information on the subject gathered together in readily available form. Mr. Crawford meets both needs in his excellent study, the sixth volume in the Canadian Government Series. Since local government in Canada comes under provincial jurisdiction, there are ten distinct systems having many similarities and diversities. Mr. Crawford's aim is to show how various Canadian municipal systems function, rather than to present a critical analysis of existing institutions and practices. But first he discusses the necessity of local government, its practical and political importance, the degree of self-government involved in local government and the factors contributing to this, and the weak constitutional position of local government, a position offset by the needs of the community, needs which can be best met by local government and which assure the continuance of that government despite the tightening of central control by province and nation.

Book Governing Ourselves

Download or read book Governing Ourselves written by Mary Louise McAllister and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the pressures of integration and assimilation, how are people within communities able to make decisions about their own environment, whether individually or collectively? Governing Ourselves? explores issues of influence and power within local institutions and decision-making processes using numerous illustrations from municipalities across Canada. It shows how communities large and small, from Toronto to Iqaluit, have distinctive political cultures and therefore respond differently to changing global and domestic environments. Case studies illuminate historical and contemporary challenges to local governance. This book covers topics including government structures and institutions and intergovernmental relations and reaches more broadly into geography, urban planning, environmental studies, public administration, and sociology.

Book Health Insurance and Canadian Public Policy

Download or read book Health Insurance and Canadian Public Policy written by Malcolm G. Taylor and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicare in Canada is not only this country's most treasured social program, it has become a defining national characteristic. Even with recent concerns over flaws in the system - long wait times, shortages of key service providers - leading to questions about the possible benefits of a two-tiered approach, the consensus is that single-payer, publicly funded health care has worked for forty years to provide Canadians with accessible, high quality services at a much lower cost than in the mainly for-profit system to the south.

Download or read book Improved Earth written by Rod Bantjes and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved Earth is a history of the making of 'abstract spaces of modernity' in the setting of the Canadian prairies, particularly rural Saskatchewan, from 1869 to 1944. Rod Bantjes demonstrates how three interrelated projectsstate formation, agrarian class formation, and the transformation of the environmentwere conceived in spatial terms and employed competing visions of spatial possibility. Bantjes proposes that the prairies be thought of as a site of modernity, and makes a case for viewing prairie farmers as 'modernists' who not only embraced, but took an active role in the making of modernity. Indeed, many of the questions that excited the imaginations of prairie politicians and reformers are alive today: the ecological and social value of 'localization' in agricultural production; the potentials for 'community' maintained and linked by transportation and communications technologies; and the possibilities of democratic decentralization within large translocal networks. The first systematic treatment of the spatial dimensions of the colonization of the prairie west, Improved Earth is a unique and thorough study certain to provoke new debates about the way space and time are imagined.
