Book excerpt: The Doukhobors, a persecuted and impoverished Russian sect, came to Canada in 1899 as one of the largest cohesive groups in the government's campaign to draw experienced farmers to unoccupied western land. This book provides a detailed examination of the Doukhobors' unique cultural landscapes, with the geographical focus on the three blocks of land set aside for them by the government in Saskatchewan. It considers the factors influencing the location of the original village sites and describes the form and pattern of the villages and fields. It also traces inter-village, inter-reserve, and interprovincial movement, and village consolidation as it became clear that direct conflict with government was unavoidable. The book identifies and analyzes the values which prevented Doukhobor/government compromise and ends with the final dispersal of the government-held village lands in the original reserves in 1918.

Debating God&’s Economy is a history of American Catholic economic debates taking place during the generation preceding Vatican II. At that time, American society was rife with sociopolitical debates over the relative merits and dangers of Marxism, capitalism, and socialism; labor unions, class consciousness, and economic power were the watchwords of the day. This was a time of immense social change, and, especially in the light of the monumental social and economic upheavals in Russia and Europe in the early twentieth century, Catholics found themselves taking sides. Catholic subcultures across America sought to legitimize&—or, in theological parlance, &“sanctify&”&—diverse economic systems that were, at times, mutually exclusive. While until now the faithful&—both scholars and nonscholars&—have typically spoken of &“the Catholic Social Tradition&” as if it were an established prescription for curing social ills, Prentiss maintains that the tradition is better understood as a debate grounded in a common mythology that provides Catholics with a distinctive vocabulary and touchstone of authority.

In Baptized with the Soil, Kevin M. Lowe offers for the first time a comprehensive history of the Protestant commitment to rural America. Christian agrarians believed that farming was the most moral way of life and a means for people to serve God by taking care of the earth that God created. When the Great Depression hit, Christian agrarians worked harder to keep small farmers on the land. They formed alliances with state universities, cooperative extension services, and each other's denominations. They experimented with ways of revitalizing rural church life--including new worship services like Rural Life Sunday, and new strategies for raising financial support like the Lord's Acre. Because they believed that the earth was holy, Christian agrarians also became leaders in promoting soil conservation.
