Book Running Naked Through the Streets

Download or read book Running Naked Through the Streets written by Caramine White and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008-12-24 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running Naked Through the Streets is an account of the year Dr. Caramine White lived in the former Communist country Slovakia, from August 2004 - May 2005. When Dr. White received a Fulbright Scholarship, she and an American literature professor from a Slovak university 'exchanged' jobs. Dr. White lived in Banska Bystrica, a city of about 84,000 in central Slovakia. Although her students spoke English, very few of the townspeople did, and the living conditions were much different from those enjoyed in America. Running Naked Through the Streets, which refers to the utter helplessness and vulnerability she often felt, is neither an autobiography nor a travel book. Although Dr. White does include some interesting information for tourists, the crux of the book is how being so alone and dependent can encourage and even accelerate personal growth. It is told with a great deal of humor and honesty. Interwoven throughout the text are humorous essays recounting some of her bizarre adventures during the year, which range from belly dancing to marathon running, from inadvertently taking part in a Polish Confirmation ceremony to becoming the object of affection for a mentally challenged homeless man.

Book excerpt: Run Naked in the Wind The Story of "Ol' Piccimuc" and the "Spook light"-an existing phenomenon which occurs nightly along a certain lonely stretch of the Missouri-Oklahoma border near the little town of Hornet, Missouri. Through the years, scientists, US Army engineers and countless other groups and individuals have tried to discover the source of the light, but still to this day, it's origin remains a mystery. There once lived such a man as "Ol' Piccimuc;" gentle, fine looking, clean of morals, holder of a law degree, is half Indian and slated for destruction by wealthy horse-breeder Joseph Coppedge. The reason? His spirited young daughter and her tragic love for young Piccimuc. OBerlin Thorton, a young writer seeking serenity in the hills of Missouri, happens upon Piccimuc, now an aging hermit, ridiculed, condemned and even hunted by the local citizenry, wins his trust and learns the secret of the mystery surrounding Ol' Piccimuc. 'Amplified by the echoing hills the moaning had grown louder. It sounded like a woman sobbing in a bereaved monotone, taking time out every little while to catch her breath he remembered the terrible moaning on the night he was lost, the night he had stumbled onto Piccimuc's cabin his flesh began to crawl '

Book Stand in My Window

Download or read book Stand in My Window written by LaTonya Yvette and published by Dial Press. This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through essays with stunning photography, the beloved multimedia storyteller and author of Woman of Color shares the powerful lessons she’s learned about creating a home that honors the past and celebrates the future. “A generous, three-dimensional portrait that inspires the reader to reflect on their own sense of home and belonging.”—Rio Cortez, New York Times bestselling author of The ABCs of Black History “Home is a reflection of what we inherit.” Grappling with the state of the world over the last few years—the global pandemic, climate change, threats to women’s rights, constant racial violence—LaTonya Yvette began to contemplate the concept of home. What does it mean to cultivate safety when it is constantly under threat? How can we nurture joy and peace within the spaces where we spend most of our precious time? Who can we turn to for guidance along the way? In Stand in My Window: Meditations on Home and How We Make It, Yvette explores these kinds of questions as she takes readers through the journey of her own rediscovery of home. In eleven meditative essays, accompanied by 25 beautiful photographs taken over the course of writing the book, Yvette illustrates how the act of homemaking can be revolutionary, liberating—and one of the most powerful expressions we have of self- and community care. Woven throughout the book is the story of the nearly 200-year-old house in upstate New York that Yvette bought and painstakingly renovated, with the aim of creating a safe space for BIPOC communities. The house—Yvette’s ultimate expression of home—provides her greatest lessons. Both visual feast and emotional salve, Stand in My Window demonstrates that home truly is what you make of it—in mind, body, soul, and in the thoughtfully curated spaces we can build for ourselves anywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suppose you and I still wondered whether all of the pinpoints of light in the night sky are the same distance from us. Suppose none of our contemporaries could tell us whether the Sun orbits the Earth, or vice versa, or even how large the Earth is. Suppose no one had guessed there are mathematical laws underlying the motions of the heavens. How would - how did - anyone begin to discover these numbers and these relationships without leaving the Earth? What made anyone even think it was possible to find out “how far,” without going there? In Measuring the Universe we join our ancestors and contemporary scientists as they tease this information out of a sky full of stars. Some of the questions have turned out to be loaded, and a great deal besides mathematics and astronomy has gone into answering them. Politics, religion, philosophy and personal ambition: all have played roles in this drama. There are poignant personal stories, of people like Copernicus, Kepler, Newton, Herschel, and Hubble. Today scientists are attempting to determine the distance to objects near the borders of the observable universe, far beyond anything that can be seen with the naked eye in the night sky, and to measure time back to its origin. The numbers are too enormous to comprehend. Nevertheless, generations of curious people have figured them out, one resourceful step at a time. Progress has owed as much to raw ingenuity as to technology, and frontier inventiveness is still not out of date.

Book Performing Libertinism in Charles II s Court

Download or read book Performing Libertinism in Charles II s Court written by J. Webster and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-08-05 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performing Libertinism in Charles II's Court examines the performative nature of Restoration libertinism through reports of libertine activities and texts of libertine plays within the context of the fraternization between George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, Sir Charles Sedley, Sir George Etherege, and William Wycherley. Webster argues that libertines, both real and imagined, performed traditionally secretive acts, including excessive drinking, sex, sedition, and sacrilege, in the public sphere. This eruption of the private into the public challenged a Stuart ideology that distinguished between the nation's public life and the king's and his subjects' private consciences.
