Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study of a politically reformed, middle-sized Midwestern city provides a model of fiscal stress that contrasts sharply with that of America's vast metropolitan centers. Dr. Rubin examines the interaction of social, political, and economic causes of the city's predicament. She then goes on to analyze the specific factors that solved the city's problems over a six-year period. Finally, she offers a self-correcting mechanism that would allow a city to save itself from financial trouble without direct state or federal assistance. This study suggests that local political factors were even more important than national factors in contributing to the city's fiscal stress. It also brings into question the theory that generosity to the poor creates urban fiscal stress and that giving less to the poor will solve urban financial problems.

Book Running on Red Dog Road

Download or read book Running on Red Dog Road written by Drema Hall Berkheimer and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mining companies piled trash coal in a slag heap and set it ablaze. The coal burned up, but the slate didn’t. The heat turned it rose and orange and lavender. The dirt road I lived on was paved with that sharp-edged rock. We called it Red Dog. My grandmother always told me, ‘Don’t you go running on that Red Dog road.’ But oh, I did.” Gypsies, faith-healers, moonshiners, and snake handlers weave through Drema’s childhood in 1940s Appalachia after Drema’s father is killed in the coal mines, her mother goes off to work as a Rosie the Riveter, and she is left in the care of devout Pentecostal grandparents. What follows is a spitfire of a memoir that reads like a novel with intrigue, sweeping emotion, and indisputable charm. Drema’s coming of age is colored by tent revivals with Grandpa, jitterbug lessons, and traveling carnivals, and though it all, she serves witness to a multi-generational family of saints and sinners whose lives defy the stereotypes. Just as she defies her own. Running On Red Dog Road is proof that truth is stranger than fiction, especially when it comes to life and faith in an Appalachian childhood.

In addition to the survey, an extensive literature review was conducted to determine the effect of the programs, cost effectiveness, and resource requirements, and to get the perspective of the public.

Book excerpt: A spark in the dark to set the world on fire, words of flame cried in the wilderness by a madman who is damned to tell the truth, The Red Book of Lance is fourteen dozen of this modern master's meticulous poems introduced by his physician and illustrated with cover portraits by his son. Darker than his other books yet brightened by flashes of mad humor, the work reflects the gravity of the times, speaking prophetically of political change and social evolution. This seventh book of Lance is a distillation of deep meditation on life and madness, the world and the universe, the self and others, and the journey of the soul. In The Red Book of Lance the poet breaks out, breaks through, and means to change your mind: burn baby burn.
