Download or read book Sounds Like Paradise a Fugitive s Tale written by Vance Munraff and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes a new life is not all it's cracked up to be. Especially an exciting new identity in government Witness Relocation for a couple of newlyweds who barely know each other, or themselves anymore. Just ask disgruntled Arizona Relocation subjects Lorenzo and Dr. Lucretia Valentino, formerly of beautiful Beach City, Indiana. Much like the merciless Sonoran Desert, things can get a little heated. It can also be kind of a drag, stuck in the middle of it. Or more precisely a dreary Nowheresville cul-de-sac apparently home more to the dead than the living. Throw into the mix a suspiciously paternal shrink and a sleazy serial killer from their permanently sealed past, an outlaw biker kingpin, a mysteriously absentee case manager, a precocious pair of newborn twins, the meddling long-distance in-laws, a cranky lady doc who despises the new government job not working with her beloved cadavers, a hopelessly haunted so-called safe house, and the nightmarish fugitive fun is just beginning.

Download or read book The Fugitive s Bride historical western romance written by Ruth Ann Nordin and published by Ruth Ann Nordin. This book was released on with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Wade Gray lost his ranch and his son, he’s had one mission: get both of them back. After a year, he has his son. Now it’s time to get the ranch. With all his careful planning, he realizes he might not make it back. He’s up against a ruthless enemy who’ll kill anyone who gets in his way. In order to secure his son’s future, he rushes to marry Millie Washington, the woman he rescued on the same night he and his family got his son back. Love doesn’t factor into the equation. Love didn’t factor into his first marriage, either. He married his first wife to rescue her from a life of prostitution and abuse, and the arrangement never led to love. So to him, marriage is a logical decision based on what can benefit both people. In this case, he can offer Millie a place to live, and she’ll be the mother to his son. It’s as simple as that. But marriage to Millie isn’t like what he had with his first wife. Millie isn’t weighed down by a harsh past. She has an innocent way of looking at the world that becomes a welcome relief after all he’s been through. In the rugged Wyoming Territory, she’s the only pleasant thing that exists. This poses a very difficult proposition for him. If he falls in love with her, it could get in the way of getting his ranch back. Feelings always get in the way of doing what’s necessary. And he can’t afford for anything to get in his way.
Download or read book Fugitive Where Are You Running written by Dénètem Touam Bona and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunting stories will usually glorify the hunters, since it is the hunters who write the stories. In this book, Dénètem Touam Bona takes up the perspective of the hunted, using the concept of marronage to highlight the lives and creativity of colonized and subjugated peoples. In a format that blends travel diary, anthropological inquiry, and philosophical and literary reflection, he narrates the hidden history of fugues – those of the runaway slave, the deserting soldier, the clandestine migrant, and all those who challenged norms and forms of control. In the space of the fugue, in the folds and retreats of dense and muggy woods, runaway countercultures appeared and spread out, cultures whose organization and values were diametrically opposed to those of colonial societies. Marronage, the art of disappearance, has never been a more timely topic: thwarting surveillance, profiling, and tracking by the police and by corporations; disappearing from databases; extending the forest’s shadow by the click of a key. In our cyberconnected world, where control of individuals in real time is increasingly becoming the norm, we need to reinvent marronage and recognize the maroon as a universal figure of resistance. Beyond its critical dimension, this book calls for a cosmo-poetics of refuge and aims at rehabilitating the power of dreams and poetry to ward off the confinement of minds and bodies.

Without warning, her mother twice uprooted her and her brother, moving thousands of miles away from family and friends. Disturbing events interrupt their outwardly normal life: break-ins, car thefts, even physical attacks on a family friend. Many years later, her mother finally revealed they'd been running from the Mafia and were receiving protection from a covert anti-organized crime task force. But the truth was even more bizarre. Gradually, Dakin's fears give way to suspicion. She puts her journalistic training to work and discovers that the Mafia threat was actually an elaborate web of lies. As she revisits her past, Dakin uncovers the human capacity for betrayal and deception, and the power of love to forgive. Run, Hide, Repeat is a memoir of a childhood steeped in unexplained fear and menace. Gripping and suspenseful, it moves from Dakin's uneasy acceptance of her family's dire situation to bewildered anger. As compelling and twisted as a thriller, Run Hide Repeat is an unforgettable portrait of a family under threat, and the resilience of family bonds.

Download or read book Run for the Border written by Steven W. Bender and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2012-05-13 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico and the United States exist in a symbiotic relationship: Mexico frequently provides the United States with cheap labor, illegal goods, and, for criminal offenders, a refuge from the law. In turn, the U.S. offers Mexican laborers the American dream: the possibility of a better livelihood through hard work. To supply each other’s demands, Americans and Mexicans have to cross their shared border from both sides. Despite this relationship, U.S. immigration reform debates tend to be security-focused and center on the idea of menacing Mexicans heading north to steal abundant American resources. Further, Congress tends to approach reform unilaterally, without engaging with Mexico or other feeder countries, and, disturbingly, without acknowledging problematic southern crossings that Americans routinely make into Mexico. In Run for the Border, Steven W. Bender offers a framework for a more comprehensive border policy through a historical analysis of border crossings, both Mexico to U.S. and U.S. to Mexico. In contrast to recent reform proposals, this book urges reform as the product of negotiation and implementation by cross-border accord; reform that honors the shared economic and cultural legacy of the U.S. and Mexico. Covering everything from the history of Anglo crossings into Mexico to escape law authorities, to vice tourism and retirement in Mexico, to today’s focus on Mexican border-crossing immigrants and drug traffickers, Bender takes lessons from the past 150 years to argue for more explicit and compassionate cross-border cooperation. Steeped in several disciplines, Run for the Border is a blend of historical, cultural, and legal perspectives, as well as those from literature and cinema, that reflect Bender’s cultural background and legal expertise.
