Gladys told me that she lived with her grandfather, Ellis until she was able to make it on her own," revealed Valerie. Gladys said, "We lived a simple life, in a small house, in a small town. We grew fruits and vegetables in the gardens. We grew the food we ate. We only bought things at the store that we could not grow in the garden. We used chopped wood as fuel to cook, clean and keep warm. It was hard work, but we survived. As a child, Grandpa taught me to be responsible, to be grateful and to be mindful of others."
