Book Jonathan Wright Plummer

Download or read book Jonathan Wright Plummer written by Elizabeth Warren and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book about Jonathan Plummer comes out of my association with the Religious Society of Friends. This group attracted me because of their practice of silent group worship and a simple lifestyle. In this time of great national stress, the Quaker devotion to peace and their quiet service to mankind satisfies my sense that theirs is an appropriate response to the needs of our times. Jonathan Plummer was praised as one of the pioneers of the renaissance of the Society of Friends at the end of the 19th Century. He urged people to act on their faith, a venerated Quaker principle. He brought together seven Yearly Meetings from Illinois to New York and Philadelphia to devise ways to carry out Quaker testimonies. These included urging peaceful relations among men, giving aid and strength to those in prison, and helping working women, children and those needing education. The long-established Quaker opposition to the death penalty for convicted criminals was also on the agenda of the organization he founded, the Friends' Union for Philanthropic Labor. The Union evolved into the Friends General Conference whose work continues today. Jonathan Plummer is an example of 19th Century Quaker devotion and service to his fellow man at a time of great social change in America.

Book excerpt: The Quaker World is an outstanding, comprehensive and lively introduction to this complex Christian denomination. Exploring the global reach of the Quaker community, the book begins with a discussion of the living community, as it is now, in all its diversity and complexity. The book covers well-known areas of Quaker development, such as the formation of Liberal Quakerism in North America, alongside topics which have received much less scholarly attention in the past, such as the history of Quakers in Bolivia and the spread of Quakerism in Western Kenya. It includes over sixty chapters by a distinguished international and interdisciplinary team of contributors and is organised into three clear parts: Global Quakerism Spirituality Embodiment Within these sections, key themes are examined, including global Quaker activity, significant Quaker movements, biographies of key religious figures, important organisations, pacifism, politics, the abolition of slavery, education, industry, human rights, racism, refugees, gender, disability, sexuality and environmentalism. The Quaker World provides an authoritative and accessible source of information on all topics important to Quaker Studies. As such, it is essential reading for students studying world religions, Christianity and comparative religion, and it will also be of interest to those in related fields such as sociology, political science, anthropology and ethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Fox, founder of the Religious Society of Friends, admonished his followers against "going to law." In this fascinating, wide-ranging book, a Quaker lawyer explores the relationship between Quakers and the American legal system and discusses Friends' legal ethics. A highly influential group in the US both for their spiritual ideals of harmony, equality and truth-telling and for their activism on many causes including abolition and opposition to war, Quakers have had many noteworthy interactions with the law. Nancy Black Sagafi-nejad sketches the history and beliefs of the early Quakers in England and America, then goes on to look at important twentieth century constitutional law cases involving Quakers, many involving civil rights issues. Sagafi-nejad's survey of 100 Quaker lawyers shows them to be at odds with the adversarial system and highlights a legal practice which must balance truth-telling and zealous advocacy. The Quaker development of extra-legal dispute resolution to solve debates amongst Friends is discussed along with a look at the possible future of mediation.

Book Pacifism in the United States

Download or read book Pacifism in the United States written by Peter Brock and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 1018 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Called "a pioneer work of the first importance" by Staughton Lynd, this book traces the history of pacifism in America from colonial times to the start of World War I. The author describes how the immigrant peace sects-Quaker, Mennonite, and Dunker -faced the challenges of a hostile environment. The peace societies that sprang up after 1815 form the subject of the next section, with particular attention focused upon the American Peace Society and Garrison's New England Non-Resistance Society. A series of chapters on the reactions of these sects and societies to the Civil War, the neglect of pacifism in the postwar period, and the beginnings of a renewal in the years before the outbreak of war in Europe bring the book to a close. The emphasis on the institutional aspects of the movement is balanced throughout by a rich mine of accounts about the experiences of individual pacifists. Originally published in 1968. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions.
