Book Volney The Ruins and Catechism of Natural Law

Download or read book Volney The Ruins and Catechism of Natural Law written by Constantin Volney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volney was once as influential as Tom Paine, and the author of one of the most popular works of the French Revolutionary era. The Ruins of Empires makes an argument for popular sovereignty, couched in the alluring and accessible form of an Oriental dream-tale. A favourite of both Thomas Jefferson, who translated it, and the young Abraham Lincoln, the Ruins advances a scheme of radical, utopian politics premised upon the deconstruction of all the world's religions. It was widely celebrated by radicals in Britain and America, and exercised an enormous influence on poets from Percy Bysshe Shelley to Walt Whitman for its indictments of tyranny and priestcraft. Volney instead advocates a return to natural precepts shorn of superstition, set out in his sequel, the Catechism of Natural Law. These days Volney enjoys a high profile in African-American Studies as a proponent of Black Egyptianism.

Book excerpt: One of the most common scenes in Augustan and Romantic literature is that of a writer confronting some emblem of change and loss, most often the remains of a vanished civilization or a desolate natural landscape. Ruins and Empire traces the ruin sentiment from its earliest classical and Renaissance expressions through English literature to its establishment as a dominant theme of early American art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first modern edition of The Ruins in English, making the work available to students, scholars and the wider reading public interested in eighteenth-century literature, travel writings, religious ideas and political thought. This edition is preceded by the editor’s introduction that covers the entire career of Volney and analyses the work from a historical perspective. The Ruins, first published in 1791, was translated into English, German, and Dutch within ten years. Volney’s writing provides an invaluable window into the historical anxieties of intellectuals at the beginning of the French Revolution. The Ruins is an exemplary Enlightenment work on history, religion and revolutions, a work of stunning erudition born within the context of anxieties built into the eighteenth-century view of the history of European ‘civilization’. It testifies to the eighteenth-century European intellectuals’ historical concerns about their society’s future during emerging modernity. This book will serve to be a handy and important primary source reading for upper-year courses on the French Revolution, history of orientalism and the Enlightenment.

Book If You Want to Learn Early African History Start Here

Download or read book If You Want to Learn Early African History Start Here written by Robin Walker and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What they had in common was that they were unsure of where to begin their reading and study but they still wanted to find out more information. This book was written to simplify that journey. As the author of When We Ruled a 700 plus page book on African history, I could also see the need to produce a smaller book that condenses and simplifies the information. I want to make the data as accessible as possible--hence this book. This book is in two parts. The first part is called If you want to learn Early African History START HERE. The second part is called 50 Questions and Answers on the History of Black People. The first part of the book, If you want to learn Early African History START HERE, is a general introduction to Classical African history covering the most important ancient and medieval empires. It began life as two separate lectures that I gave to introduce African history. One of the lectures was called When We Ruled: Thousands of Years of a Visible African Heritage. The second lecture was called The Lost Civilisations of Central Africa. To write this section of the book, I combined these two lectures into one narrative. In the final part of this section, I suggest other sources that a student could read to advance their knowledge even more. The second part of the book, 50 Questions and Answers on the History of Black People, began life when a colleague approached me to give him an extended interview on Black or African history. The colleague posed 50 varied questions to me to which I gave extended answers. He asked me about Nile Valley history, Ancient Kingdoms and Empires, The Slave Trade, earlier Black historians and their writings, etcetera. I hope that the 50 questions answer most of the questions that people raise concerning Black or African history. Robin Walker

Download or read book American Enlightenments written by Caroline Winterer and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative reassessment of the concept of an American golden age of European-born reason and intellectual curiosity in the years following the Revolutionary War The accepted myth of the “American Enlightenment” suggests that the rejection of monarchy and establishment of a new republic in the United States in the eighteenth century was the realization of utopian philosophies born in the intellectual salons of Europe and radiating outward to the New World. In this revelatory work, Stanford historian Caroline Winterer argues that a national mythology of a unitary, patriotic era of enlightenment in America was created during the Cold War to act as a shield against the threat of totalitarianism, and that Americans followed many paths toward political, religious, scientific, and artistic enlightenment in the 1700s that were influenced by European models in more complex ways than commonly thought. Winterer’s book strips away our modern inventions of the American national past, exploring which of our ideas and ideals are truly rooted in the eighteenth century and which are inventions and mystifications of more recent times.

Book How Ruins Acquire Aesthetic Value

Download or read book How Ruins Acquire Aesthetic Value written by Tanya Whitehouse and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first recent philosophical account of how ruins acquire aesthetic value. It draws on a variety of sources to explore modern ruins, the ruin tradition, and the phenomenon of “ruin porn.” It features an unusual and original combination of philosophical analysis, the author’s photography, and reviews of both new and historically influential case studies, including Richard Haag’s Gas Works Park, the ruins of Detroit, and remnants of the steel industry of Pennsylvania. Tanya Whitehouse shows how the users of ruins can become architects of a new order, transforming derelict sites into aesthetically significant places we should preserve.
