Book excerpt: The existence of separate Barrettia and Titanosarcolites assemblages in Cuba having been questioned, this paper explains how these fauna may be distinguished, and the localities where they may be found; makes a necessary correction; gives a more definite age (Campanian) than was previously possible for the Barrettia fauna; and recapitulates the corrected faunal lists, including the larger Foraminifera found with Barrettia and Titanosarcolites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of geological cartography in Cuba in its more than 135 years of history has been possible through the consultation of numerous archival reports, publications, maps and personal interviews with different authors and geologists of vast experience. A brief critical analysis is made of the increase in the degree of geological knowledge of the country since the elaboration of the Geological Sketch of the Cuban Island at a scale of 1: 2 000 000 (Fernández de Castro, 1883), first of Cuba and of Ibero-America, until the most recent Digital Geological Map of Cuba at scale 1: 100 000 (Pérez Aragón, 2016). Cuba and its surroundings are a geological mosaic in the southeast corner of the North American plate with rocks from many different origins, from Proterozoic to Quaternary, extended along the southern border of the plate. From the Eocene, this belt has been dissected by several great faults, related to the development of some great oceanic depressions (Cayman trough and Yucatan basin). The fossil record of Cuba, which covers approximately the last 200 million years of life on Earth, is rich in very varied fossils, witnessing a wide diversity of organisms, both animals and plants, that inhabited the Antillean and Caribbean region; and that constitute the inheritance of the biological diversity that the current Cuban archipelago exhibits. As a result of the preparation of the Cuban Metallogenic Map at scale 1: 250 000, forty-one models and eight sub-models of metallic mineral deposits were identified. These models, of descriptive–genetic type, together with the analysis of their spatial distribution and their relationship with geology, allowed the identification and mapping of ten mineral systems, linked to the geodynamic environments present in the Cuban territory. Cuba has large deposits of limestone, loam, dolomite, kaolin, gypsum and anhydrite, rock salt, marbles, sands and clays of different types, zeolites, peat, therapeutic peloids and many more. There are manifestations of decorative and precious rocks such as jasper, jadeite, different varieties of quartz and even xylopals. A compilation of geochemical data of oceanic basalt samples from previous works, together with data of analyzed samples during this study in order to discuss geochemical criteria based on immobile element (proxies for fractionation indices, alkalinity, mantle flow and subduction addition), provide a comprehensive ophiolite classification according to their tectonic setting. This book addresses different facets of the geological knowledge of Cuba: history of its cartography, marine geology, fossil record, stratigraphy, tectonics, classification of its ophiolites, quaternary deposits, metallogeny and minerageny.

Book The Evolutionary Biology of the Bivalvia

Download or read book The Evolutionary Biology of the Bivalvia written by Elizabeth Harper and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2000 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bivalves are key components of recent marine and freshwater ecosystems and have been so for most of the Phanerozoic. Their rich and long fossil record, combined with their abundance and diversity in modern seas, has made bivalves the ideal subject of palaeobiological and evolutionary studies. Despite this, however, topics such as the early evolution of the class, relationships between various taxa and the life habits of some key extinct forms have remained remarkably unclear. This volume integrates palaeontological and zoological approaches and sheds new light on the course of bivalve evolution.

Book New Aspects on Tethyan Cretaceous Fossil Assemblages

Download or read book New Aspects on Tethyan Cretaceous Fossil Assemblages written by H.A. Kollmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geologic term "Tethys" introduced by Eduard Suess (1893) into science was originally a paleogeographic one. Since its original description it has been used in various ways. One of them is Tethys as a paleo-biogeographic concept. This concept was adopted for IGCP Project 262, Tethyan Cretaceous Correlation. It was proposed by G. Czaszar and Heinz A. Kollmann and has been approved by the IGCP Board in February 1987. The project has its aims primarily in the improvement of the stratigraphic correlation between the heterogenous facies of the Tethyan realm. The requests to paleontology in this programme are of various kinds: The delimitation of the Tethyan realm in space and time needs clear statements on the composition of Tethyan faunal or floral assemblages. Biozones based on various fossil groups have to be established for biostratigraphic correlation. Finally, Tethyan bioprovinces have to be established. These problems have been discussed in a special meeting of the paleontological group of the project which was held on January 25-27, 1988, in Vienna. Papers presented at this meeting are published in this volume.

Book North African Cretaceous Carbonate Platform Systems

Download or read book North African Cretaceous Carbonate Platform Systems written by Eulàlia Gili and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume arises from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on 'North African Cretaceous rudist and coral formations and their contributions to carbonate platform development , which was held in Tunisia, on 13-18 May, 2002. It was convened by M. El Hedi Negra (Universite 7 Novembre de Carthage, now Universite de Tunis El Manar, Tunisia) and Eulalia Gili (Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain). The aims of the ARW were: (1) to review and critically assess currently available data on rudist/coral formations in North African Cretaceous carbonate platforms, and their correlations, and to integrate these data with other studies around the Mediterranean; (2) to place the findings in a global context, noting both similarities with other regions of platform development as well as local differences, and (3) exploring possible reasons for these; and to help promote the creation of a vibrant peri-Mediterranean collaborative research community, embracing researchers from the entire region, to carry forward this ambitious research programme. Twenty-two presentations (oral and poster) provided both topical reviews (covering rudist evolution, and ecology, mineralogical changes, applications of strontium isotope, and graphic correlation methods, and platform typology) as well as regional syntheses (Tunisian reservoirs, Moroccan platform history, Tunisian platforms and rudist/coral facies, Algerian platforms, and Egyptian platforms). Fifteen of these presentations are expanded here as papers. The workshop was attended by 24 academic staff, 4 geologists from the oil industry, plus several observers and students.
