Book excerpt: Peter Paul Rubens was the most inventive and prolific northern European artist of his age. This book discusses his life and work in relation to three interrelated themes: spirit, ingenuity, and genius. It argues that Rubens and his reception were pivotal in the transformation of early modern ingenuity into Romantic genius. Ranging across the artist’s entire career, it explores Rubens’s engagement with these themes in his art and life. Alexander Marr looks at Rubens’s forays into altarpiece painting in Italy as well as his collaborations with fellow artists in his hometown of Antwerp, and his complex relationship with the spirit of pleasure. It concludes with his late landscapes in connection to genius loci, the spirit of the place.

Book From Darkness to Light

Download or read book From Darkness to Light written by Ruben S and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Darkness to Light presents a true account of the life of Ruben S. The son of a frightened mother and an alcoholic father, Ruben grew up shuttling between Puerto Rico and Florida. His intention is not to portray himself as a fearless, brave, intelligent, or grandiose person; to him, these characteristics are irrelevant when considering the personal destruction of a human being. Instead, he intends to tell a story that seeks to guide others to identify their own pain and failures. Learn to seek and identify those areas that are creating problems in your life and, without comparing them, address, correct, and remove them once and for all. For families or friends affected by the use and abuse of alcohol, controlled substances, or other devastating problems, Ruben's story should serve as a call for change. It can provide a foundation for anyone trying to resume life, find freedom from the destructive force that is addiction, and once again become a productive member of society. From Darkness to Light is the story of a life saved and brought back from the precipice of alcohol and drug abuse. It is a story of hope that aims to make a difference in the life of anyone who reads it.

Book excerpt: The eclectic art of which the Carracci family dreamed was realised by Rubens with the ease of genius. However, the problem was much more complicated for a man of the north, who wished to add to it a fusion of the Flemish and Latin spirits, of which the rather pedantic attempts of Romanism had illustrated the difficulties. He achieved it without losing anything of his overflowing personality, his questing imagination, and the enchanting discoveries of the greatest colourist known to painting. Rubens, the greatest master of Baroque painting’s exuberance, took from the Italian Renaissance what could be of use to him, and then built upon it a style of his own. It is distinguished by a wonderful mastery of the human form and an amazing wealth of splendidly lighted colour. He was a man of much intellectual poise and was accustomed to court life, travelling from court to court, with pomp, as a trusted envoy. Rubens was one of those rare mortals who do real honour to humanity. He was handsome, good and generous, and he loved virtue. His laborious life was well ordered. The creator of so many delightful pagan feasts went each morning to mass before proceeding to his studio. He was the most illustrious type of happy and perfectly balanced genius, and combined in his personage passion and science, ardour and reflection. Rubens expressed drama as well as joy, since nothing human was foreign to him, and he could command at will the pathos of colour and expression which he required in his religious masterpieces. It might be said that he was as prolific in the representation of the joy and exuberance of life as Michelangelo was in the representation of passionate emotions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did contemporary audiences recognise the sensuously painted 'Rubensian body' as a particular, if not peculiar, artistic repertoire? How can we best understand seventeenth-century practises of reading and viewing the Rubensian body? Can our criteria for eroticism be linked with that of Rubens? Was the body a 'fluid' category for Rubens and where does the boundary of the human body lie? It is hoped that these investigative questions will lead to a detailed evaluation about the paradigmatic status of the Rubensian body and whether we are justified in stressing its singularity within seventeenth-century Flemish and the broader early modern European visual culture.

Book St Jacob s Antwerp Art and Counter Reformation in Rubens s Parish Church

Download or read book St Jacob s Antwerp Art and Counter Reformation in Rubens s Parish Church written by Jeffrey Muller and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of more than forty churches that fortified Antwerp as the bulwark of the Counter Reformation in the Netherlands, only St. Jacob’s stands now with its art and archives intact. Parish church of the city’s elite, it is filled with masterpieces, including the altarpiece that Rubens painted for his own burial chapel. Works of architecture, painting, sculpture, and hundreds of sacred objects, documented by the archives, enable a reconstruction of the integral role that art played in the transformation of a whole society over the span of two centuries, from 1585 to the 1790s. It is a history of real people and organizations, who used art for religion, politics, and social purpose, joined together in a church that embodied a diverse community.
