Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rozier's History of the Early Settlement of the Mississippi Valley In 1850 Senator Rozier was a candidate for Congress, his Opponents being John F. Darby and Judge Bowlin, who was then Representative. Although he went out of St. Louis with a handsome majority, he was beaten by Darby by a few votes in the district. At that time he represented the Benton side of the political issues of the day. In 1851 he was elected Mayor of Ste. Gene vieve, when that city virtually controlled the mineral trade of Southeast Missouri. In 1854 he established at his native town an academy for the education of boys, in which he took a great interest for many years. In 1856 he was elected a member ofthe Legislature and served ably for two years. In 1858 he was elected Pre sident ofthe branch bank of the Merchants' Bank of St. Louis, located at Ste. Genevieve. In 1872 he waselected State Senator, without opposition, and has since been chairman of the Committee on Mines and Mining, a position for which he is admirably qualified by rea son Of his extensive mining operations in St. Francois, Jefferson, and other counties in Southeast Missouri. By his activity and influence he obtained a large amount from the Missouri Legislature, for the prosecution of the State geological survey. To go back a little, in 1845 Senator Rozier was a delegate to the Southwest Convention, at Memphis, of which John C. Calhoun was president, and made a re port, accompanied by a topographical map of the sub merged lands of South Missouri, which was approved by the Convention and attracted much attention. Excerpt: ...by a mouth one hundred yards wide, and is boatable one hundred and. forty miles. From its position, and the excellence of its lands, it is one of the most important rivers of the state. Chariton, Otter, 'Apple, and Macoupin rivers, are all considerable streams that water fine tracts of country. On the north side of the Illinois, the rivers that enter on that shore, have their courses, for the most part, in mountainous bluffs, which often approach near the river. For a great distance above its mouth, the river is almost as straight as a canal; has in summer scarcely a perceptible current, and the waters, though transparent, have a marshy taste to a degree to be almost unpotable. The river is wide and deep; 'and for the greater part of its width, is filled with aquatic weeds to such a degree that no person could swim among them. Only a few yards width in the centre of the stream is free from them. It enters the Mississippi through a deep forest, by a mouth four hundred yards wide. Perhaps no river of the western country has so fine a boatable navigation for such a great distance, or waters a richer and more luxuriant tract of country. On the banks of this river, the first French immigrants from Canada fixed themselves; and hero was the scenery on which they founded their extravagant paintings of the western country. By a moderate amount of labor and expense, this river might be united with the Chicago of lake Michigan. Appropriations have already been made by the state for the canal that is intended to effectuate this purpose. We have already remarked, that at certain seasons of the year, boats of five tons burden already pass through the morass, from one extremity of which, the waters are discharged into the Chicago of lake Michigan; and...

Book Historical Address on the Early Exploration and Settlement of the Mississippi Valley

Download or read book Historical Address on the Early Exploration and Settlement of the Mississippi Valley written by C. C. Parry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Address on the Early Exploration and Settlement of the Mississippi Valley: Delivered in Davenport, Iowa, January 21st 1873 The country we now occupy on this western bank of the Mississippi, and of which, as American citizens, we are justly proud, has not descended to us as a rich inheritance from a venerable and time-honored ancestry. By an historic movement grander than that of the Jewish Exodus, and an irruption that throws into the shade the Norman conquest, we are the present the present century, and within the memory of living men, this Trans-Mississippi region has borne the name of a French, monarch and acknowledged the sovereignty of a Spanish king. Through what series of changes the present state of things, as now passing before our eyes, has been brought about, would seem not altogether devoid of interest to us, the now living actors, and will be of not less interest to those who shall come after us. Desirous to contribute something, however meagre, to this historic fund, I have endeavoured to bring together, in chronological order, some of the principal events in the early exploration and settlement of the Mississippi Valley, and to weave into my narrative such incidents as I have been able to gather up from the limited sources at my command, having any direct reference to our local history.
