Book excerpt: Printed privately in 1826, Anne Newport Royall's Sketches of History, Life and Manners in the United States caused quite a stir, as did most of her publications. Considering herself to be the guardian of democracy (she later became a friend of John Quincy Adams), Royall used her works to expose corruption and bad dealings wherever she went, with a boldness that was remarkable for an era obsessed with gentility and 'Äúwomanly virtue'Äù. 'ÄúSketches'Äù catalogs Royall's travels from Louisiana to Maine, including Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Albany, Springfield, Hartford, Worcester, Boston, and New Haven, noting each city's population, industry, physical description and modes of available transportation, as well as regional dialects, modes of dress and the character of the city's residents.

Book Appalachian Pastoral

Download or read book Appalachian Pastoral written by Michael S. Martin and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project overall attempts to recast Appalachian literature in terms of a ‘lost tradition’ of texts that are generally out-of-print though of central importance to understanding the history of the region and its current environmental and cultural challenges. The epilogue will also consider the way that ecological-based literary criticism offers a vital language for how antebellum travel writers sought to frame the region from a 19th-century environmental point of view. The book aims to resituate the field of Appalachian Studies to an earlier historic genesis in the 19th-century and bring to light several books which have received scant scholarly attention in the canon of Appalachian and American literature, respectively. The book centers on the argument that mid-19th-century travel writers going through or from the Appalachian region drew on familiar versions of 18th-century European, mainly British, landscape aesthetics that would help make the readerly experience less alien to their erudite regional and Northern audiences. These travel writers, such as Philip Pendleton Kennedy and David Hunter Strother, consciously appropriated such aesthetic tropes as the pastoral as a way to further dramatic the effect in their nonfiction accounts of Appalachia, while the reader could find such references comforting as they considered whether to domesticate or tour the Appalachian region.

Book Hidden History of Cambridge Harvard

Download or read book Hidden History of Cambridge Harvard written by Jane Merrill and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home to the location where George Washington took command of the troops and to America's oldest Ivy League university, Cambridge is a city that feels like a town. Hasty Pudding meetings were enlivened with mock trials spoofing happenings in Cambridge and among the faculty; by 1860 the trials had evolved into shows. In a corner of the Cambridge Common, across from Harvard Yard, a Gilded Age statue of a Puritan has been toppled several times. Letters home from Robert Kennedy were found stashed on a high shelf in a college room he occupied, over 30 years after he graduated. From protests to the "Beer Garden Summit", author Jane Merrill shares the stories behind notable landmarks and some significant but little-known facts in and around town.

Book Appalachian Ecocriticism and the Paradox of Place

Download or read book Appalachian Ecocriticism and the Paradox of Place written by Laura Wright and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecocriticism and Appalachian studies continue to grow and thrive in academia, as they expand on their foundational works to move in new and exciting directions. When researching these areas separately, there is a wealth of information. However, when researching Appalachian ecocriticism specifically, the lack of consolidated scholarship is apparent. With Appalachian Ecocriticism and the Paradox of Place, editors Jessica Cory and Laura Wright have created the only book-length scholarly collection of Appalachian ecocriticism. Appalachian Ecocriticism and the Paradox of Place is a collection of scholarly essays that engage environmental and ecocritical theories and Appalachian literature and film. These essays, many from well-established Appalachian studies and southern studies scholars and ecocritics, engage with a variety of ecocritical methodologies, including ecofeminism, ecospiritualism, queer ecocriticism, and materialist ecocriticism, to name a few. Adding Appalachian voices to the larger ecocritical discourse is vital not only for the sake of increased diversity but also to allow those unfamiliar with the region and its works to better understand the Appalachian region in a critical and authentic way. Including Appalachia in the larger ecocritical community allows for the study of how the region, its issues, and its texts intersect with a variety of communities, thus allowing boundless possibilities for learning and analysis.

Book Ethan Frome Summer

  • Author : Edith Wharton
  • Publisher : Modern Library
  • Release : 2011-11-02
  • ISBN : 0307808505
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Ethan Frome Summer written by Edith Wharton and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2011-11-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pair of masterly short novels, featuring an introduction by Elizabeth Strout, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Anything Is Possible and My Name Is Lucy Barton Thought Edith Wharton is best known for her cutting contemplation of fashionable New York, Ethan Frome and Summer are set in small New England towns, far from Manhattan’s beau monde. Together in one volume, these thematically linked short novels display Wharton’s characteristic criticism of society’s hypocrisy, and her daring exploration of the destructive consequences of sexual appetite. From the wintry setting of Ethan Frome, where a man hounded by community standards is destroyed by the very thing that might bring him happiness, to the florid town of Summer, where a young woman’s first romance projects her into a dizzying rite of passage, Wharton captures beautifully the urges and failures of human nature. Praise for Edith Wharton and Ethan Frome “Ethan Frome [is considered] Mrs. Wharton’s masterpiece . . . The secret of its greatness is the stark human drama of it; the social crudity and human delicacy intermingled; the defiant, over-riding passion, and the long-drawn-out logic of the paid penalty. It has no contexts, no mitigations; it is plain, raw, first-hand human stuff.”—The New York Times “Ethan Frome [has] become part of the American mythology. . . . Wharton’s astonishing authority here is to render such pain with purity and economy . . . Truly it is a northern romance, akin even to Wuthering Heights.”—Harold Bloom “Traditionally, Henry James has always been placed slightly higher up the slope of Parnassus than Edith Wharton. But now that the prejudice against the female writer is on the wane, they look to be exactly what they are: giants, equals, the tutelary and benign gods of our American literature.”—Gore Vidal
