Book Hamlet s Problematic Revenge

Download or read book Hamlet s Problematic Revenge written by William F. Zak and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hamlet's Problematic Revenge: Forging a Royal Mandate provides a new argument within Shakespearean studies that argues the oft-noted arrest of the play’s dramaturgical momentum, especially evident in Hamlet’s much delayed enactment of his revenge, represents in fact a succinct emblem of the “arrested development” in the moral maturity of the entire cast, most notably, Hamlet himself—as the unifying disclosure and tragic problem in the play. Settling for unreflective and short-sighted personal gratifications and cold comforts, they truantly elbow aside a more considerable moral obligation. Again and again, all yield this duty’s commanding priority to a childishly self-regarding fear of offending those in nominal positions of power and questionable positions of authority—figures, like Ophelia and Hamlet’s fathers, for instance, demanding an unworthy deference. While Hamlet fails to consider with loving regard the improved well-being of the larger community to which he owes his existence and, fails to interrogate the moral adequacy of the Ghost’s command of violent reprisal (two things he never does nor even contemplates doing), “all occasions” in the play “do inform against” him and merely “spur a dull revenge”—not, as he interprets his own words, arguing the need for greater urgency in his vendetta, but, instead, to “inform against” the criminality of that very course itself. His revenge therefore can be argued as “dull,” not because he cannot summon the wherewithal to enact it more bloodily, but because in obsessing about it ceaselessly he remains unreceptive to its “dull” or “unenlightened” opposition to the evil he hopes to eradicate. Hamlet does not avenge his father; this book argues that he becomes him. Amidst a wealth of previously unremarked figurative mirrorings, as well as much of the seemingly digressive material in Hamlet within Shakespearean studies, Hamlet’s Problematic Revenge brings to light a new interpretation of the tragic problem in the play.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sweeping naval history chronicles the many British vessels to bare the name Revenge, from the sixteenth-century galleon to the twentieth-century submarine. The glory years of the Royal Navy can be glimpsed between Sir Francis Drake’s Revenge and the Polaris submarine of the same name, built four centuries later. In its various forms, Revenge was at the Armada, the Azores, Trafalgar, and Jutland and with weapons capable of terrible destruction. The first Revenge, a 46-gun galleon launched in 1577, symbolized the boldness and flair of that period. Commanded by the legendary Drake, it was faster and more maneuverable than the massive Spanish galleons. Many years later, the mighty 25,000-ton battleship was representative of the strength of the British Empire at its peak. The first Revenge would have comfortably fitted across the beam of this battleship. More than a study of these mighty ships, The Story of the HMS Revenge describes their commanders and crews as well. Illustrated throughout, it captures the flavor of life on board and details technological developments, and of course, the actions in which they were involved.

I can feel it - almost taste it, bringing me back to that night. It doesn't matter that I'm still breathing; I no longer need it, I no longer want it. I despise it along with everything else around me. The only thing I long for is to fade away. I've given up. Until her at least... AVALON. She comes into my world, knocking me on my a@s. It turns me on to have her around me. Makes me want to wrap my hand around her tight little throat and fu@k her until she feels my pain, feels the monster in me, but also makes me want to protect her from the very thing that she should be afraid of... me. Once she sees the damage that I'm capable of; she'll look at me like everyone else around me does: with fear. AVALON KNIGHT HIS EYES... THE DARKNESS IN them draws me to him, making me want to taste him, feel him... and save him. I shouldn't have gotten on the back of his motorcycle that day. I know that now. Colton warned me. I was told it was dangerous. I was told that nothing would be the same. He was right. ROYAL is dangerous, dark, and seductive; the very thing that keeps me hanging on, willing to give my last breath just to touch him... breathe him in. He's savage, inked, and highly captivating. So different from his brother... He's hazardous to my health, mind, and body, yet the only thing that I crave. I want to free him. I want to change his mind, but I'm afraid that he's already too faded...

Book The Revenge of Lord Eberlin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second book in the “superbly entertaining” (Booklist) Regency historical series from New York Times bestselling author Julia London. Tobin Scott, otherwise known as Count Eberlin of Denmark, has returned to Hadley Green, the site of his father’s hanging for thievery fifteen years ago. He has but one goal in mind, and that is to avenge his father, who he believes was innocent of stealing the Countess of Ashwood jewels. Now a wealthy man, Tobin intends to exact his revenge by destroying the Ashwood estate and the Countess of Ashwood, who as a young girl testified against his father. Lily Boudine has become the Countess of Ashwood through a very surprising twist of fate. She is even more surprised when a vaguely familiar looking man calls and tells her he is Tobin Scott, whom she knew as a boy, and that he intends to destroy her or Ashwood. He leaves the choice to her. Because so many people depend on Ashwood, Lily chooses herself, thinking that she can hold him at bay long enough to remove Ashwood from his clutches. But as they play the game of seduction, and she slowly discovers that he is not the cold, heartless man he would like to present to her, she also believes that Tobin is right—his father did not steal the jewels. And if she can find them, she can help restore his family’s honor—but not before she discovers another shocking secret.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond All Bearing distills and illuminates moments in ordinary lives, in ordinary time, and renders them extraordinary. These poems turn the quotidian into the rhythm and the rhyme that is poetry, preserving them on the page. Some of these moments shimmer with the beauty of pansies and paperwhites out of season; some flicker with the grace of candles placed on a table at the end of a tragic day or the grace of a holy kiss; some hum with love for family, friends, and students; some hint at a longing for God; some speak without flinching of unspeakable tragedy. And yet, among the songs of loss and grief that pervade this collection, God enters “beautiful beyond all bearing.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing Kyd reads Thomas Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy, the box-office and print success of its time, as the play that established the revenge genre in England and served as a ‘pattern and precedent’ for the golden generation of early modern playwrights, from Marlowe and Shakespeare to Middleton, Webster and Ford. Interdisciplinary in approach and accessible in style, this collection is crucial in two respects: firstly, it has a wide spectrum, addressing readers with interests in the play from its early impact as the first sixteenth-century revenge tragedy, to its afterlife in print, on the stage, in screen adaptation and bibliographical studies. Secondly, the collection appears at a time when Kyd and his play are back in the spotlight, through renewed critical interest, several new stage productions between 2009 and 2013, and its firm presence in higher-education curriculum for English and drama.
