Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Missed Opportunities, Marc Raboy reveals the short-sightedness behind the traditional view of Canadian broadcasting policy as an instrument for promoting a national identity and culture. He argues that Canadian broadcasting policy has served as a political instrument for reinforcing a certain image of Canada against insurgent challenges, such as maintaining the image of Canada as a political entity distinct from the United States and acting against internal threats, most notably from Quebec. It has served as a vehicle for the development of private broadcasting industries and to further the general interests of the Canadian state. Most of the time, Raboy maintains, this policy has been the object of vigorous public dispute.
Download or read book Un Covering the North written by Valerie Alia and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite setbacks and cutbacks, Canada leads the world in northern and Aboriginal communications. This book provides a comprehensive survey of communications in the circumpolar region, focusing on the Canadian Arctic and sub-Arctic but also looking at the circumpolar North (Alaska, Siberia, Greenland, and the Nordic/Saami nations). Radio, television, magazines, newspapers, and web sites are all covered. As technologies and access improve, Aboriginal people are increasingly taking control of their own representation and consolidating their presence in northern media. Alia concludes that Canada will maintain its leadership in northern communications in the years ahead, given the topic's far-reaching importance and international context.

Download or read book Clinic of Hope written by Donna M. Ivey and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2004-08 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Rene M. Caisse of Bracebridge, Ontario, chose nursing as a career, she couldn't have imagined that she would spend much of her life embroiled in a controversy that persisted even past her death in 1978. All the fuss was over Essiac, the herbal cancer remedy she created and with which she achieved extraordinary results. This meticulously researched biography details Rene's tireless efforts to obtain official recognition of Essiac and her battle with the government of Ontario over the operation of her Bracebridge cancer clinic. She steadfastly refused to reveal her secret formula until authorities acknowledged its efficacy, and legislation demanding the recipe eventually forced her to close her clinic in 1941, after nearly six years of offering hope to many hundreds of cancer victims.

Download or read book The Civil Power of the News written by Jackie Harrison and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark book is concerned with the civil power of the news. This power can be seen in the ways the news engages with public sentiment through a focus on three invariant civil concerns: identity, legitimacy and risk. The book analyses how news stories engage with these concerns to make civil and anti-civil judgements, which influence public sentiment and determine the boundaries we place and maintain around the society we live in. Through historical and contemporary examples of this boundary shaping and maintenance, The Civil Power of the News presents a bold and original account of the architecture of news, the influence it has on our conceptions of civility, and, ultimately, the power it wields.
Download or read book Hillsong Church written by Miranda Klaver and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the expansion of the influential Pentecostal Hillsong Church global megachurch network from Australia across global cities. Ethnographic research in Amsterdam and New York City shows that global cities harbor nodes in transnational religious networks in which media play a crucial role. By taking a lived religion approach, media is regarded as integral part of everyday practices of interaction, expression and consumption of religion. Key question raised is how processes of mediatization shape, alter and challenge this thriving cosmopolitan expression of Pentecostalism. Current debates in the study of religion are addressed: religious belonging and community in global cities; the interrelation between media technology, religious practices and beliefs; religion, media and social engagement in global cities; media and emerging modes of religious leadership and authority. In this empirical study, pressing societal issues like institutional responses to sexual abuse of children, views on gender roles, misogyny and mediated constructions of femininity are discussed.
