Book Essential Readings in Canadian Constitutional Politics

Download or read book Essential Readings in Canadian Constitutional Politics written by Peter H. Russell and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential Readings in Canadian Constitutional Politics introduces students, scholars, and practitioners to classic authors and writings on the principles of the Canadian Constitution as well as to select contemporary material. To complement rather than duplicate the state of the field, it deals with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and with Canadian mega-constitutional politics in passing only, focusing instead on institutions, federalism, intergovernmental relations, bilingualism and binationalism, the judiciary, minority rights, and constitutional renewal. Many of the selections reverberate well beyond Canada's borders, making this volume an unrivalled resource for anyone interested in constitutional governance and democratic politics in diverse societies.

Book Beyond the Impasse

Download or read book Beyond the Impasse written by Institute for Research on Public Policy and published by IRPP. This book was released on 1998 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts to reform the Canadian constitution have only resulted in a serious impasse fostered by demands for change from Quebec and reticence from English Canada. This book looks at the potential for achieving reconciliation through a new partnership between Quebec and Canada in a series of papers that examine the stakes for both Canada and Quebec in opting for a modified relationship that is neither the status quo nor complete separation. Two papers in part 1 lay the conceptual groundwork concerning the constituent elements of partnership. Papers in part 2 deal with the economic union in the context of a renewed partnership. Four papers in part 3 examine issues concerning rights, recognition, and citizenship in a Quebec-Canada partnership. Part 5 broadens the discussion to the international arena and includes a comparative international scan of partnership models. The final part distils the two editors' separate conclusions on how to move beyond the impasse based on the studies presented.

Book Contemporary Quebec

Download or read book Contemporary Quebec written by Jacques Cotnam and published by Toronto: McClelland and Stewart. This book was released on 1973 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The unprecedented attention directed towards Quebec in recent years has led to a wealth of published works about that province. Many secondary schools, colleges, and universities now offer courses in French Canadian Civilization, and it is to facilitate these studies that this bibliography of contemporary writings has been compiled. Arranged by subject, the references list both French and English works, with titles of translations included if they exist. The author has limited himself chiefly to books published during the past twenty years, but some extremely useful, older publications have been included. The comprehensive range of topics covered includes Arts and Folklore, Culture, Economy and Education, Geography and History, Journalism, Law, Literature, Politics, Religion- virtually every aspect of Quebec life. Author Jacques Cotnam was born and educated in Quebec and received his degrees at Laval University. Since 1964 he has taught in the Department of French Literature at York University in Toronto, where he is now Associate Professor. He has published four books, Faut-Il inventer un nouveau Canada?, Poetes du Quebec, Vivre au Quebec (of which he is co-editor), and Essai de bibliographie chronologique des ecrits d' Andre Gide, plus numerous articles and papers on French and French Canadian literature, culture, and politics." –Publisher.

Book Politics in Canada

Download or read book Politics in Canada written by Robert J. Jackson and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1994 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appropriate for introductory courses in Canadian politics at the university level. The new edition of this award-winning text offers students a comprehensive introduction to Canadian politics within a comparative global context. It has been updated to include information up to and including the federal election of 1993. The authors structure the parts around four key political concepts - culture, institutions, behaviour, and public policy. There is substantial material on patronage and conflict of interest, and on the structure and role of the courts. Important issues such as women in politics, Canada's international peacekeeping role, Canada-U.S. relations, free trade, constitutional affairs, and policy-making in this age of budgetry restraint also receive significant treatment.

Book Trade and Commerce

Download or read book Trade and Commerce written by Malcolm Lavoie and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, the economic framework of Canada’s Constitution has been a subject largely neglected by judges, scholars, and commentators. Trade and Commerce fills this gap by bringing to light a lost understanding of how the Constitution structures economic relations. As Malcolm Lavoie reveals, the Constitution includes foundational commitments to property rights, local government autonomy, and the principle of subsidiarity. At the same time, it creates a platform for integrated national markets with secure channels for interprovincial trade. This economic vision remains a vital part of Canada’s constitutional order and is relevant to a purposive interpretation of the Constitution. But contemporary legal discourse has begun to lose touch with this vision, with regrettable consequences in a number of different policy areas. Exploring the implications of the economic Constitution in the context of contemporary issues – including disputes over interprovincial trade and jurisdictional tensions between federal, provincial, and Indigenous governments with respect to the environment and the economy – Trade and Commerce restores economic ideas to the forefront of constitutional thinking in Canada.
