Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The island of Bougainville in the South Pacific was the site of one of the largest and most gruelling campaigns fought by Australian forces during the Second World War. During the offensive against the Japanese from November 1944 to August 1945, more than 500 Australians were killed and two Victoria Crosses awarded. A veteran later described Bougainville as 'one long bloody hard slog'. Despite this, little is known about the campaign, which was dismissed as an unnecessary and costly operation. In the first major study of the Bougainville campaign since 1963, Karl James argues that it was in fact a justifiable use of Australia's military resources. Drawing on original archival research, including wartime reports and soldiers' letters and diaries, James illustrates the experience of Australian soldiers who fought. Generously illustrated with over forty photographs, this important book tells how this often overlooked battle played an important part in Australia's Second World War victory.

She expertly and empathetically describes how one should train, eat, drink, and think while becoming a trail runner. If you aren’t yet a trail runner, The Trail Runner’s Companion will make you want to become one.” - John Trent, longtime ultrarunner, race director, Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run board member, and award-winning sportswriter "The Trail Runner's Companion is a must-have for all trail runners, both new and experienced. I highly recommend it.” - Kaci Lickteig, 2016 UltraRunning Magazine UltraRunner of the Year and Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run champion

Book excerpt: In 1853, in the farthest outpost of the Czar’s empire, four Scandinavian indentured servants—seven-year men no better off than slaves—resolve to escape from Russian Alaska. They steal an Indian canoe and point it south toward Astoria, in Oregon, twelve hundred miles away. This novel of audacity is based on a historical incident discovered by the author, and transformed by his imagination into a sustained sweep of adventure. The four sea runners must weather the worst the ill-named Pacific can throw at them, and must weather their own fierce squalls, too, as day upon day, guided as much by instinct and determination as by map, they paddle through the magnificent maze of the Northwest Coast toward the mouth of the Columbia River.

Book Showdown at Shepherd s Bush

Download or read book Showdown at Shepherd s Bush written by David Davis and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epic clash of an Irish-American, Italian, and Onondaga-Canadian that jump-started the first marathon mania and heralded the modern age in sports The eyes of the world watched as three runners—dirt poor Johnny Hayes, who used to run barefoot through the streets of New York City; candymaker Dorando Pietri; and the famed Tom Longboat—converged for an epic battle at the 1908 London Olympics. The incredible finish was contested the world over when Pietri, who initially ran the wrong way upon entering the stadium at Shepherd's Bush, finished first but was disqualified for receiving aid from officials after collapsing just shy of the finish line, thus giving the title to runner-up Hayes. In the midst of anti-American sentiment, Queen Alexandra awarded a special cup to Pietri, who became an international celebrity and inspired one of Irving Berlin's first songs. In Showdown at Shepherd's Bush, David Davis recalls a time when runners braved injurious roads with slips of leather for shoes and when marathon mania became a worldwide obsession. Standing next to Cait Murphy's Crazy '08 as an invaluable look at a bygone sporting era, Showdown at Shepherd's Bush is a dramatic narrative aimed at the recordsetting number of marathon participants in the United States (more than 500,000 in 2010!) and other running enthusiasts, and timed nicely for the return of the Olympics to London in 2012.

Steeling herself to not only survive, but take advantage of her new circumstances, she uses foreknowledge to manipulate the rising stock market into enough capital to allow her friends to build the rumrunner boat of their dreams. With a less than subtle nudge from a local garage owner-cum-bootlegger, they form a partnership that leads to more dangerous encounters than any of the unlikely foursome might dream in their worst nightmares. Running at night in their marvelous creation, the Ghost, they must contend with ferocious natural elements, elude Coast Guard patrols, fight off determined pirates and even one of their own clients. While her partners struggle to maintain difficult rendezvous, Jill, still connected to her computer, is being manipulated to complete the insane goal of the 21st century power broker who sent her back in time. Torn between loyalty and affection for both young men, she forms a plan to turn the tables on the evil conspirators and secure a future for her new friends. From the rocky shores of British Columbia to the infamous Chinese tunnels beneath Tacoma, Washington, danger and intrigue follow the Night Runner partners. This carefully crafted and historically correct adventure tale will have readers of all ages turning its pages into the wee hours as they vicariously live the life of the young rum-runners as they speed through the night in the Ghost, a truly marvelous Night Runner.
