Book excerpt: To the Algonquin-speaking Native Americans, the territory later to be named Wauconda was their land. With the 1833 Treaty of Chicago, they were forced to cede it to the US government and move west of the Mississippi River. This action paved the way for white European Americans to settle and prosper. Their descendants thrived, built successful businesses, and raised families. Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century, the railroad and new roads brought out Chicago city folks who cooled themselves on Wauconda's sandy beaches. Now many 21st-century residents who can trace their lineage to those early families continue to live and work as Wauconda adapts to growth.

Download or read book Strength of Mind written by Jacob L. Goodson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education in the twenty-first century should bring together freedom and knowledge with courage and hope. Why these four concepts? As Goodson argues in Strength of Mind, higher education in the twenty-first century offers preparation for ordinary life. Freedom and knowledge serve as the conditions for cultivating courage and hope within one’s ordinary life. More specifically, courage and hope ought to be understood as the virtues required for enjoying ordinary life. If college-educated citizens wish to hold onto the concepts of courage and hope, however, then both courage and hope need to be understood as intellectual virtues. As a moral virtue, courage has become outdated. As a theological virtue, hope violates the logic of the golden mean. Focusing on intellectual virtues also requires shifting from moral perfectionism to rational perfectionism. Rational perfectionism involves keeping impossible demands in view for oneself while constantly and continually striving for one’s “unattained but attainable self.” Goodson defends these arguments by learning from the bits of wisdom found within American Transcendentalism (Emerson, Cavell), German Idealism (Kant, Hegel), Jewish philosophy (Maimonides, Spinoza, Putnam), neo-pragmatism (Putnam, Rorty, West), post-modern theories about pedagogy (Nietzsche, Foucault, Rorty), and secular accounts of perfectionism (Murdoch, Cavell).

Book Would You Could You I Can You Can

Download or read book Would You Could You I Can You Can written by J. Lee Mayfield and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We can each change the world if only we care to listen. There is a force greater than ourselves—the Omnipotent Presence—and we have the power to communicate with it. This presence is the God Source and has given each and every one of us the gift of insight and connection to our God Voice—our Holy Spirit—but we must clear our mind to hear it. Wanting to connect to this presence, J. Lee Mayfield began his spiritual journey after attending a two-week course hosted by Ross Peterson and having later attended A Course in Miracles. Through his readings and lessons, he began learning how to use everyday tools to help calm his mind and connect to the source. Through dreams, mediations, and an active lifestyle, Mayfield slowly began to receive visions and messages from the God Source, changing the way he interacted with others along with how he viewed the world. By achieving this connection, he knows that anyone can find it while on their spiritual journey. Would You? Could You? I Can! You Can! shares reflections, insights, and teachings of J. Lee Mayfield and how he continues to connect to the Omnipotent Presence by being actively aware of the now and calming his mind.

Book Psychic Healing

Download or read book Psychic Healing written by John Weldon and published by ATRI Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-13 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You might expect this book to ridicule the whole idea of psychic healing—surgery without anesthesia instantly closed wounds and other bizarre phenomena relating to this occult science. Rather than labeling psychic healing quackery or trickery or cheap magic the authors verify the fact that psychic healing is very real and the ramifications are horrifying. Normal people cannot heal psychically. Only occultists can. In “genuine” psychic healing demonic energy is employed. Eyewitness accounts of weird operations dematerializing flesh and other mind-boggling evidences abound in this text. More than just one of the strangest and most disturbing books you may ever read this is a carefully researched heavily documented exposé of an alarming otherworld practice.
