Download or read book Rosmini s Contribution to Ethical Philosophy Classic Reprint written by John Favata Bruno and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rosmini's Contribution to Ethical Philosophy Thus, if we want to know the meaning, character, and value of a philosophical system, we must replace it in its historical frame, in its natural background. We must regard it as the mental atti tude which the philosopher assumed towards the problems which were in the air when he lived. Only thus can we retrace the genesis of his ideas, his fundamental thought, and the leading motive of his intellectual efforts. Only then may we have the surest basis for understanding and appreciating his doctrine. To regard it as something merely abstract and isolated from human conditions, as independent of its author's universe of life and love, aloof from his reality and experience, or divorced from, and unrelated to the de mands and interests of his social milieu, would lead to inevitable failure. He holds that ethics is only concerned with moral good. Budemonology is the science which deals with happiness. Thus, the great problem the moral philosopher is called upon to solve is the problem of the nature of moral good. It is indeed a problem of the highest practical importance, since human happiness depends upon its right solution. The nature of moral good, however, may be traced only by the analysis of its fundamental factors. Now, from all Rosmini's ethical works it may be concluded that he thinks the moral good to be the outcome of two main factors, one of which we may call "metaphysical" and the other "psychological. ' According to him, all ethical judging, the will and its whole activity, must conform to a supreme and fundamental law of action, which is categorically imperative, universally true and valid as well as universally uniform. This is, for him as for Kant, the most significant feature of morality. Such a law, however, which he supposes to be prior to all particular laws, grounding their existence and obligatory force, is objective, absolute, and independent of all empirical motives. This primal and fundamental law is the metaphysical and chief factor of morality; it constitutes its essence. But the law presupposes an agent, and an agent capable of adjusting himself; it presup 2See "Prefazione alle opere di filosofia morale"; "Principii della scienza morale," Ch. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Abstract Ethics The present work is the result of long reflections, but was actually called forth by Professor J uvalta's Old and New Problem of Morality, to which my attention was drawn by Mr Benn's review in Mind (january, The instantaneous impression made by the review, in spite of the reviewer's disagreement with the author, was, This is the doctrine of which I was in search. Though awakened from dogmatic slumber by Re nouvier (mind and the Critique Philosophique, I had for long continued the attempt to derive the ethical law of justice from ends or goods. This is of course the tradition of English ethics; and my own resistance to Renouvier's Kantianism was only one expression of the effort of English thought to avoid the a priori. The a priori, however, in some sense, cannot be avoided. English Experientialism, largely justified though it was and is, must inevitably be modified in the end by the Continental Rationalism that found its most powerful expression in Kant. Book Prolegomena to Ethics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prolegomena to Ethics Classic Reprint written by Thomas Hill Green and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prolegomena to Ethics Even the Prolegomena to Ethics (the title is the author's own) was left unfinished. The greater part of the book had been used, some of it twice over, in the Professorial lectures; and about a quarter of it (the first 103 pages) was printed in the numbers of Mind for January, April, and July, 1882. But, according to a letter of the author written not long before his death, some twenty or thirty pages remained to be added, and, though with this exception the whole was written out nearly ready for printing, no part of it can be considered to have undergone the final revision. At his death Mr. Green left the charge of the manuscript to me; and I have now only to explain the course I have followed in preparing it for publication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common-Sense Ethics This book is a study, an earnest, fresh and living study of the ethical problem by a young philosopher who has reflected deeply on the metaphysical theories of the ancient and modern periods and has tried seriously to bring them into accord and to discover in them some guidance, particularly in regard to the political and social evolution which the present generation is witnessing. He describes his own View as that of common-sense Ethics. But by common sense it is clear that he does not intend to class himself with unphilosophical opinion, either in reasoned or con temptuous Opposition to philosophical theory. Download or read book The Theory of Ethics Classic Reprint written by Arthur Kenyon Rogers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Ethics The logical framework of the position which as a matter of theory I have here attempted to defend will be found more particularly in the first three chapters. These undertake to be a connected piece of reasoning which to some extent stands or falls as a whole. The two more essential features are the conception of value, and the naturalistic theory of duty as having its source in certain negative emotional restrictions on the positive life of desire. In view of the fact that I disagree with his conclu sions on almost every point, I should like to acknowledge a special obligation to the ethical writings of Mr. G. E. Bloore. I have drawn to some extent in the following pages upon articles published at various times recently in the Philo sophical Review. The analysis has however been sharp ened at a good many points; and I trust the argument has been made more convincing by being brought together in a connected form. Book excerpt: Science increasingly deals with human behavior: biology, neuroscience, genetics, psychology, evolutionary theory, and ethology all bring new insights into our actions and uncover new facts about our agency. However, what is the philosophical significance of their findings? The answer to this question varies according to one's background philosophical views. On the one hand, the dominant empiricist view contends that the sciences can in principle tell us everything there is to know about human ...
