Book excerpt: The deadly war currently raging in West Africa in a part of Cameroon, formerly called the British Southern Cameroons, is the least reported war in the world. This is because the French Cameroon Government has forcibly prevented interested foreign reporters from entering the country and local reporters from independently visiting the war zone. The UN's casual treatment of the conflict as a triviality, Britain's reticence in engaging in a mediation as a resolution tool (solution), France's remote involvement in maintaining the status quo in the war zone are all components dragging the war on. The complexity of the history of Southern Cameroons, now renamed Ambazonia, originates from a foreign imperialistic policy implemented nearly sixty years ago. Additional foreign powers today continue to enforce an ill-conceived policy that was never in the best interest of Southern Cameroons, forcefully keeping two distinctly different groups of people (Southern Cameroons and La Republique du Cameroun) together out of greed and expediency. The war is intense and ongoing. But to fully understand the current situation, one needs to know the edicts and mandates imposed on Southern Cameroons from 1919 through the 1960s and 1970s. This book underlines them all. This book will provide the international community, media, negotiators, and international policymakers and decision-making people with an in-depth understanding of the conflict, a raging war that is claiming far too many lives.

Sorting out what colonial influences inform British Southern Cameroons' quest to 'restore independence and sovereignty' in postcolonial life becomes increasingly difficult. In British Southern Cameroons: Nationalism & Conflict in Postcolonial Africa, a distinguished group of contributors examine the British Southern Cameroons' nationalism conflict from a variety of perspectives. The volume indicts the colonial occupation of the West African territory, one example where the United Nations, the organization formed to resolve conflicts is viewed as having created one in spite of its own Resolution 1514 of 1960 granting independence to colonial territories and peoples. The volume reveals one striking fact about nationalism struggles - that ordinary people and groups in colonial situations are not passive subjects of those political, historical and other circumstances, which they neither sought nor created, and which they understand and want to change. As such, the spontaneous reactions that the Southern Cameroons Question threatens African integration harbor the danger that those who have such reactions do so in a vacuum and out of context. They probably ignore the fact that there are United Nations and international principles governing the relations between peoples. They may ignore the principles governing issues of territorial acquisition as well as the freedoms and rights that all peoples are entitled to enjoy. They may also simply ignore the existence of international instruments against the crimes that no people may commit against another. It is these principles that govern the context within which all countries and people operate and interact. If these spontaneous reactions are not to become the law, then we must always examine nationalist complaints and conflicts in light of the principles laid down to govern the relations between peoples.

Book excerpt: This book argues that since the emergence of the Cameroon National Union (CNU) and the one-party state in 1966, Cameroonians have progressively degenerated into the syndrome of collective amnesia inspired by a culture of sycophancy, glorifying and deifying political leadership. These developments stand in stark contrast to what obtained in the nascent Southern Cameroons – the UN Trust territory administered by Britain until 1961 when its population voted overwhelmingly by 70.5% to gain their independence by establishing a federation with the then French-speaking Republic of Cameroon. From the late 1950s until the dismantling of the Cameroon Federation, Southern Cameroons and later West Cameroon had a vibrant parliament, a House of Chiefs (or Senate), an independent Judiciary, an ideal, corruption-free Public Service, a state government with ministers presided over by an Executive Prime Minister and, for a decade, West Cameroon provided the Vice Presidency for the Federal Republic of Cameroon. In what may be accurately described as Prof Anthony Ndi’s seminal work, he contends and rightly so that solutions to the legion of problems that plague contemporary Cameroon may be easily found in the pages of The Golden Age of Southern Cameroons. Agents for this transformation do not have to be invented or imported from Mars; all we need is a patriotic spirit, political will, readiness to dialogue, transparency and commitment to democracy.

Book excerpt: Thousands of Cameroonian women played an essential role in the radically anti-colonial nationalist movement led by the Union of the Populations of Cameroon (UPC): they were the women of the Democratic Union of Cameroonian Women (UDEFEC). Drawing on women nationalists' petitions to the United Nations, one of the largest collections of political documents written by African women during the decolonization era, as well as archival research and oral interviews, this work shows how UDEFEC transcended ethnic, class, education and social divides, and popularized nationalism in both urban and rural areas through the Trust Territories of the Cameroons under French and British administration. Foregrounding issues such as economic autonomy and biological and agricultural fertility, UDEFEC politics wove anti-imperial democracy and notions of universal human rights into locally rooted political cultures and histories. UDEFEC's history sheds light on the essential components of women's successful political mobilization in Africa, and contributes to the discussion of women's involvement in nationalist movements in formerly colonized territories.

The study reveals that these "strangers" organised themselves in Pressure Groups in order to fight for equal opportunities with the indigenes and when such opportunities were not coming, they initiated the Reunification Idea, propagated it and converted many reluctant Southern Cameroonians. They militated in pro-reunification political parties such as the KNC, KNDP, UPC and OK and successfully shifted the reunification idea from the periphery to the centre of Southern Cameroons decolonisation politics. The immigrants convinced the UN through petitions and reunification which was the most unpopular option for independence became one of the two alternatives at the 1961 plebiscite. They and the reluctant KNDP campaigned and voted for it. The Reunification of Cameroon was therefore the handiwork of French Cameroon immigrants.
