Book Roosevelt in Africa

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roosevelt in Africa: Graphic Account of the World's Most Renowned Hunter in the Wilds of Africa, His Unerring Aim and Wonderful Ability as a Hunter, Encounters With Lions, Tigers, Elephants and Other Wild Beasts of the Jungle; Containing Also a Complete History and Study of W The Roosevelt hunting expedition, which gives the special title to this work, is herewith described because its chief figure is not only an ex-President of the United States, but an American authority on wild animals who, in his ambition to become a world authority, thus ventured into some of the most famous hunting grounds of Africa. Another reason why unusual prominence is given to it, is that it is one of the most noteworthy expeditions ever organized to hunt big game and make scientific investigations among the animals of perhaps the most important zoological division of the earth. From my earliest boyhood, wild animal life has had a fascination for me. I have been nearly over the globe and in most of the countries where wild animals have been least disturbed by civilization. I have carefully studied each wild animal with a view to becoming acquainted not only with its physical appearance, but with its habits and manner of living, with all the traits of its character and every detail of its private life. In describing the animals I have tried to avoid the use of all scientific words and terms so as not to confuse those readers who have made no special study of zoology. My experiences have taught me the truth of the Scriptural saying that "man and the animals are kin," and I hope and believe that I am doing a benefit to my fellow man, as well as giving him genuine enjoyment and pleasure, by bringing him into a closer acquaintance with God's animal kingdom. Book Theodore Roosevelt on Hunting

Download or read book Theodore Roosevelt on Hunting written by Lamar Underwood and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Besides being one of our greatest presidents, Roosevelt stands alone as a conservationist, a visionary when it came to the protection and preservation of America's natural resources, and an author."--Library Journal There have been few hunters as daring, as powerful, and as articulate as our twenty-sixth president, Theodore Roosevelt. From his ranching years in the Dakota Territory to the famous African adventures, Roosevelt's tales are unparalleled stories of the hunt. The best of them are collected here. Of Roosevelt's many volumes of hunting and exploration, two reader favorites have always been Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail and African Game Trails, both excerpted here. During his ranching years, Roosevelt ranged far and wide, and his African trips were also famously bold. In all his expeditions, Roosevelt reveals in detail hunts that were incredible journeys of both pursuit and discovery, for wherever he went in the outdoors he assumed the dual roles of hunter and naturalist. The hunts range from upland birds and waterfowl to prized big game animals like elk, bear, and sheep amid lofty peaks. There are goat pursuits among ice-glazed mountain spires, and close encounters with grizzlies in the black timber. He survives lion charges and buffalo attacks, and stumbles on elephants.

In this must-read memoir, Roosevelt recalls exciting hunts and kills. More than just an average hunting book, African Game Trails is an account of the ups and down of life on safari, also chronicling the culture of East Africa, its people, animals, and flora. Roosevelt's group was led by famous hunter-tracker R.J. Cunninghame, and often accompanied by Frederick Selous, a famous big game hunter and explorer. African Game Trails is a detailed account of this thrilling adventure. Roosevelt's compelling recollection of the hunt ensures this book is essential reading for fans of the 26th president and hunting enthusiasts alike. "[Roosevelt's] descriptions of the land, the people and the game he encountered are as colorful and readable today as they were in 1910, when this classic was originally published." -- Dallas Morning News "Frequently lightened by touches of genius and always readable." -- The New York Times Theodore Roosevelt (1858 - 1919) was the 26th president of the United States and a noted sportsman and naturalist.
