Book excerpt: When the feud between the Montagues and Capulets spills into the streets of Verona, a great love must be kept secret--that of Romeo, son of Montague, and Juliet, daughter of the sworn enemy. But only a tragic twist of fate can promise peace. When Shakespeare staged Romeo and Juliet in 1594, it was already a centuries-old Italian tale that had been translated and adapted in verse and prose by a number of poets and storytellers. Out of the common threads of those now-forgotten works, Shakespeare created not only one of his most popular plays, but one that would become the archetypal love story of the English language. Revised edition: Previously published as Romeo and Juliet, this edition of Romeo and Juliet (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

Once there, however, Romeo and Juliet see each other and fall in love instantly, confessing their love to one another in the moonlight after Romeo sneaks into her backyard to see her once more on her balcony. After arranging a secret marriage through Friar Lawrence and the Nurse, the two are wed and plan to tell their families. However, Mercutio and Tybalt meet in the street and duel; when Romeo tries to intervene, Mercutio is killed. In his grief and rage, Romeo kills Tybalt. He is exiled from Verona by the Prince, which is like a death sentence to the pair of young lovers. Juliet, whose father insists that she marry Count Paris, runs to Friar Lawrence in desperation. He gives her a potion to make her appear dead; when she is placed in her family's tomb, he will come and get her and bring her to Romeo. Romeo does not receive the news of the plan, however; he receives word of her death. Overcome by grief, he goes to her tomb, drinks poison, and dies right before she awakens. Book excerpt: It's a story you think you know: the age-old tale of "star-cross'd lovers"; two families at war; a romance, so pure and absolute, fated for a tragic end. Yet, nothing captures the spark, the possibility, and the surprise of Shakespeare's work quite like this....In Juliet and Romeo acclaimed author of European novels David Hewson reworks and expands on the classic story so that it becomes something richer, something new and entirely its own. Much more than a simple love story, it is a brilliant examination of young versus old, hope against despair, and, for Juliet, the search for individual identity at a time when women were regarded as little more than chattel.Told in modern language, with twists and turns that don't appear in the original, Juliet and Romeo is a classic Renaissance love story for today.Performed by Richard Armitage, the original audio version of the work won an audiobook Oscar, the Audie for best original production of 2018.
