Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brown Romantics: Poetry and Nationalism in the Global Nineteenth Century proceeds from the conviction that it is high time for the academy in general and scholars of European Romanticism to acknowledge the extensive international impact of Romantic poetry. Chander demonstrates the importance of Romantic notions of authorship to such poets as Henry Derozio (India), Egbert Martin (Guyana), and Henry Lawson (Australia), using the work of these poets, each prominent in the national cultural of his own country, to explain the crucial role that the Romantic myth of the poet qua legislator plays in the development of nationalist movements across the globe. The first study of its kind, Brown Romantics examines how each of these authors develop poetic means of negotiating such key issues as colonialism, immigration, race, and ethnicity.

Book Reinventing Romantic Poetry

Download or read book Reinventing Romantic Poetry written by Diana Greene and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2004-01-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinventing Romantic Poetry offers a new look at the Russian literary scene in the nineteenth century. While celebrated poets such as Aleksandr Pushkin worked within a male-centered Romantic aesthetic—the poet as a bard or sexual conqueror; nature as a mother or mistress; the poet’s muse as an idealized woman—Russian women attempting to write Romantic poetry found they had to reinvent poetic conventions of the day to express themselves as women and as poets. Comparing the poetry of fourteen men and fourteen women from this period, Diana Greene revives and redefines the women’s writings and offers a thoughtful examination of the sexual politics of reception and literary reputation. The fourteen women considered wrote poetry in every genre, from visions to verse tales, from love lyrics to metaphysical poetry, as well as prose works and plays. Greene delves into the reasons why their writing was dismissed, focusing in particular on the work of Evdokiia Rostopchina, Nadezhda Khvoshchinskaia, and Karolina Pavlova. Greene also considers class as a factor in literary reputation, comparing canonical male poets with the work of other men whose work, like the women’s, was deemed inferior at the time. The book also features an appendix of significant poems by Russian women discussed in the text. Some, found in archival notebooks, are published here for the first time, and others are reprinted for the first time since the mid-nineteenth century.

Book The Black Romantic Revolution

Download or read book The Black Romantic Revolution written by Matt Sandler and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prophetic poetry of slavery and its abolition During the pitched battle over slavery in the United States, Black writers—enslaved and free—allied themselves with the cause of abolition and used their art to advocate for emancipation and to envision the end of slavery as a world-historical moment of possibility. These Black writers borrowed from the European tradition of Romanticism—lyric poetry, prophetic visions--to write, speak, and sing their hopes for what freedom might mean. At the same time, they voiced anxieties about the expansion of global capital and US imperial power in the aftermath of slavery. They also focused on the ramifications of slavery's sexual violence. Authors like Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, George Moses Horton, Albery Allson Whitman, and Joshua McCarter Simpson conceived the Civil War as a revolutionary upheaval on par with Europe's stormy Age of Revolutions. The Black Romantic Revolution proposes that the Black Romantics' cultural innovations have shaped Black radical culture to this day, from the blues and hip hop to Black nationalism and Black feminism. Their expressions of love and rage, grief and determination, dreams and nightmares, still echo into our present.

Book Poems by William Cullen Bryant Classic American Poetry of the Romantic Era

Download or read book Poems by William Cullen Bryant Classic American Poetry of the Romantic Era written by William Cullen Bryant and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This supreme collection of William Cullen Bryant's poetry includes his original works, his unique translations of several classic poems, plus an anthology of little-seen verses he composed in later life. A highly regarded poet of the romantic era, Bryant was rarely out of the American public's eye. For many years he served as editor of the popular newspaper the New York Evening Post, as well as contributing poems and essays to several other magazines and periodicals, Bryant's name was synonymous with the USA's fledgling artistic expression and literature throughout much of the nineteenth century. Bryant's most famous poem, Thanatopsis, was subject to much surprise in that many assumed it had been plagiarized, or at least ghost-written, by a European poet. When it was published in the early nineteenth century, there had been little romantic poetry of such quality produced by an American.

This study traces the history and development of the sonnet throughout the nineteenth-century, examining the work of Wordsworth, Keats, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, George Meredith and a number of other key canonical and non-canonical writers.

Book Routledge Revivals English Poetry in the Later Nineteenth Century 1933

Download or read book Routledge Revivals English Poetry in the Later Nineteenth Century 1933 written by B. Ifor Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1933, this study, which underwent revision in the 1960s, is a comprehensive survey of the verse of English nineteenth-century poets whose work appeared after 1860. A special feature is the full and critical treatment of minor writers. In no other book is their work so carefully evaluated. There is a full account of the minor Pre-Raphaelites, of James Thomson, the poet of The City of Dreadful Night, of Henley, Stevenson and George MacDonald. John Davidson is the subject of a long and revealing study. Evans suggests that poetry from the late nineteenth century is neglected in scholarly study, and that Victorian Romanticism deserves more attention than it has recently received.

Book The Broadview Anthology of Romantic Poetry

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of Romantic Poetry written by Joseph Black and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 1170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for courses with a major focus on poetry during the Romantic period, this volume includes all the poetry selections from Volume 4 of The Broadview Anthology of British Literature, along with a number of works newly edited for this volume. The Broadview Anthology of Romantic Poetry maintains the Broadview Anthology of British Literature’s characteristic balance of canonical favorites and lesser-known gems, featuring a breadth of poetry from William Blake to Phillis Wheatley, from Ebenezer Elliott to Felicia Hemans. To give a sense of the full sweep of the Romantic period, the anthology incorporates important early figures from William Collins to Phillis Wheatley, as well as works by Victorians—such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Alfred, Lord Tennyson—for whom Romanticism was a formative force. “Contexts” sections provide valuable background on cultural matters such as “The Natural and the Sublime” and “The Abolition of Slavery,” while the companion website offers a wealth of additional resources and primary works. Longer works newly prepared for the bound book include Byron’s Manfred and The Giaour, Keats’s Hyperion, and substantial selections from Wordsworth’s fourteen-book Prelude; authors newly added for this volume include Hannah Cowley, Hannah More, Ann Yearsley, Robert Southey, and Thomas Moore.
