Book The Roman Journals of Ferdinand Gregorovius 1852 1874

Download or read book The Roman Journals of Ferdinand Gregorovius 1852 1874 written by Ferdinand Gregorovius and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Journals of Ferdinand Gregorovius, 1852-1874 Fifteen years have passed since Gregorovius's Tagebücher were given to the public in Germany, and the somewhat belated appearance of an English version may seem to demand a few words of justification. This justification is, I think, found in the fact that the stirring events of the years chronicled by the historian in his diary have forfeited none of their interest with the flight of time, and the summer that celebrates the Garibaldi centenary seems no inopportune season for bringing before the English reader the record of an eye-witness of the eventful years that beheld the death-struggles of the temporal power of the papacy and the rise of United Italy. The Rome that Gregorovius knew and loved is, alas! vanishing day by day, and the laments with which, at the close of his journal, he bewails her gradual transformation must be re-echoed by everyone who first knew her, as I did, even so recently as the early days of King Humbert. While the monuments of antiquity are jealously treasured and preserved, the equally interesting memorials of the Middle Ages have been ruthlessly dealt with, having in many cases been utterly destroyed, in others dwarfed or crowded out of sight by the huge modern buildings which have arisen beside them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project is made possible through support from the Terra Foundation for American Art. When Elizabeth Cady Stanton penned the Declaration of Sentiments for the first women’s rights convention, held in Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848, she unleashed a powerful force in American society. In A Sisterhood of Sculptors, Melissa Dabakis outlines the conditions under which a group of American women artists adopted this egalitarian view of society and negotiated the gendered terrain of artistic production at home and abroad. Between 1850 and 1876, a community of talented women sought creative refuge in Rome and developed successful professional careers as sculptors. Some of these women have become well known in art-historical circles: Harriet Hosmer, Edmonia Lewis, Anne Whitney, and Vinnie Ream. The reputations of others have remained, until now, buried in the historical record: Emma Stebbins, Margaret Foley, Sarah Fisher Ames, and Louisa Lander. At midcentury, they were among the first women artists to attain professional stature in the American art world while achieving international fame in Rome, London, and other cosmopolitan European cities. In their invention of modern womanhood, they served as models for a younger generation of women who adopted artistic careers in unprecedented numbers in the years following the Civil War. At its core, A Sisterhood of Sculptors is concerned with the gendered nature of creativity and expatriation. Taking guidance from feminist theory, cultural geography, and expatriate and postcolonial studies, Dabakis provides a detailed investigation of the historical phenomenon of women’s artistic lives in Rome in the mid-nineteenth century. As an interdisciplinary examination of femininity and creativity, it provides models for viewing and interpreting nineteenth-century sculpture and for analyzing the gendered status of the artistic profession.

Book Tiber

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bruce Ware Allen
  • Publisher : University Press of New England
  • Release : 2018-11-20
  • ISBN : 1512603341
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Tiber written by Bruce Ware Allen and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rich history of Italy's Tiber River, Bruce Ware Allen charts the main currents, mythic headwaters, and hidden tributaries of one of the world's most renowned waterways. He considers life along the river, from its twin springs high in the Apennines all the way to its mouth at Ostia, and describes the people who lived along its banks and how they made the Tiber work for them. The Tiber has served as the realm of protomythic creatures and gods, a battleground for armies and navies, a livelihood for boatmen and fishermen, the subject matter of poets and painters, and the final resting place for criminals and martyrs. Tiber: Eternal River of Rome is a highly readable history and a go-to resource for information about Italy's most storied river.
