This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Catholic Opposition to Papal Infallibility The following pages have been written to show the difficulties experienced by Roman Catholics in assenting to the doctrine of Papal Infallibility. No attempt is here made to write a complete account of the Vatican Council. Indeed, many subjects discussed in that Assembly are entirely omitted. Our interest is with one doctrine alone. What is attempted is, simply to sketch the inner history of Roman opposition to the dogma in different countries and several centuries, until and after the memorable Decree of 18th July 1870. We are simply concerned to show the process by which a very considerable section of Bishops, priests, and laity in the Roman Church were constrained to pass from one belief to its opposite. The literature of the subject is, of course, immense. A considerable part of the details here recorded have never appeared in English before. They lie buried in enormous German treatises, or in the vast official Acta of the Council; or in the documentary collections of Cecconi, Von Schulte, Friedrich, Friedberg, and many others; or in scattered pamphlets and periodicals to which access is now by no means easily obtained. The materials for a history of the opposition to the doctrine have of recent years largely increased. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The True and the False Infallibility of the Popes written by Joseph Fessler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True and the False Infallibility of the Popes: A Controversial Reply to Dr. Schulte This important work of the lamented Dr. F essler, Bishop of St. Polten, or more properly St. Hippolytus, in Austria, who was secretary-general to the Vatican Council in the year 1870, and who, worn out with the fatigues of the Council, died two years afterwards, is now for the first time brought before the notice of English Catholics. Entitled by the good Bishop himself The True and False Infallibility of the Pope, it presents to the reader a perfect repertorium' of all the stock objections and erroneous representations, both as regards the doctrine itself, and as regards the history of previous Papal rescripts and acts, that the fertile mind and ex tensive reading of Dr. Schulte, Professor of Canon and German Law in the University of Prague, could ingeniously pile together and misconstrue, in order to bring Odium upon all Papal Bulls and Papal acts from, as he says, the time of Pope Gregory VII. Book Popes and Patriarchs

Download or read book Popes and Patriarchs written by Michael Whelton and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For any dialogue between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches to be fruitful, we must first understand our differences. Popes and Patriarchs covers some of the distinctives in theology and worldview that separate the churches of the East from those of the West, focusing primarily on the claims of papal supremacy. Author Michael Whelton, a convert from Catholicism to Orthodoxy, discusses some of the theological and historical issues that led him to explore the teachings of the Orthodox Church, including the doctrine of original sin, the influence of Medieval scholastic thought on the Western Church, and the modern trend toward evolutionary Christianity. Part II examines in depth the true attitude of the early Eastern saints of the Church toward the papacy, an attitude radically different from that frequently attributed to them by Roman Catholic apologists.A final chapter is devoted to typical questions Roman Catholics raise about the Orthodox Church, including a comprehensive discussion of divorce and remarriage.
