Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to accompany a traveling exhibition organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Musee du Louvre, this publication features an extraordinary selection of these works dating from the first century B.C. to the early fourth century A.D.-from the most famous to some with new significance resulting from new information. Themes such as religion, urbanism, war, imperial expansion, funerary practices, intellectual life, and family are vividly represented in mosaics, frescoes, bronze and terracotta statuettes, monumental sculptures, sarcophagi, reliefs, and glass and metal vessels. The catalogue also covers the careful procedures of cleaning and repair that took place during the collection's restoration. The resulting reincarnation of the Louvre's pieces transforms the contemporary view of early Roman public and private life, conveying a novel perspective and understanding of these ancient masterpieces. With comprehensive essays by a team of scholars on emperorship, citizenship, architecture, decorative arts, and religion, this title presents a complete picture of life in ancient Rome. AUTHOR: Daniel Roger and Cecile Giroire are curators in the Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities Department of the Musee du Louvre. 185 colour plates

Book Louvre Museum Paintings

Download or read book Louvre Museum Paintings written by Nicolae Sfetcu and published by Nicolae Sfetcu. This book was released on with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Louvre Museum is the largest of the world's art museums by its exhibition surface. These represent the Western art of the Middle Ages in 1848, those of the ancient civilizations that preceded and influenced it (Oriental, Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman), and the arts of early Christians and Islam. At the origin of the Louvre existed a castle, built by King Philip Augustus in 1190, and occupying the southwest quarter of the current Cour Carrée. In 1594, Henri IV decided to unite the palace of the Louvre with the palace of the Tuileries built by Catherine de Medicis. The Cour Carrée was built by the architects Lemercier and then Le Vau, under the reign of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. The Department of Paintings currently has about 7,500 paintings (of which 3,400 are exposed), covering a period that goes from the Middle Ages to 1848 (date of the beginning of the Second Republic). By including the deposits, the collection is, with 12,660 works, the largest collection of ancient paintings in the world. With rare exceptions, the works after 1848 were transferred to the Musée d'Orsay when it was created in 1986.

Book Roman Artists Patrons and Public Consumption

Download or read book Roman Artists Patrons and Public Consumption written by Brenda Longfellow and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, the study of Roman art has shifted focus dramatically from issues of connoisseurship, typology, and chronology to analyses of objects within their contemporary contexts and local environments. Scholars challenge the notion, formerly taken for granted, that extant historical texts—the writings of Vitruvius, for example—can directly inform the study of architectural remains. Roman-era statues, paintings, and mosaics are no longer dismissed as perfunctory replicas of lost Greek or Hellenistic originals; they are worthy of study in their own right. Further, the scope of what constitutes Roman art has expanded to include the vast spectrum of objects used in civic, religious, funerary, and domestic contexts and from communities across the Roman Empire. The work gathered in Roman Artists, Patrons, and Public Consumption displays the breadth and depth of scholarship in the field made possible by these fundamental changes. The first five essays approach individual objects and artistic tropes, as well as their cultural contexts and functions, from fresh and dynamic angles. The latter essays focus on case studies in Pompeii, demonstrating how close visual analysis firmly rooted in local and temporal contexts not only strengthens understanding of ancient interactions with monuments but also sparks a reconsideration of long-held assumptions reinforced by earlier scholarship. These rigorous essays reflect and honor the groundbreaking scholarship of Elaine K. Gazda. In addition to volume editors Brenda Longfellow and Ellen E. Perry, contributors include Bettina Bergmann, Elise Friedland, Barbara Kellum, Diana Y. Ng, Jessica Powers, Melanie Grunow Sobocinski, Lea M. Stirling, Molly Swetnam-Burland, Elizabeth Wolfram Thill, and Jennifer Trimble.
