Book Scottish Emigration to Colonial America 1607 1785

Download or read book Scottish Emigration to Colonial America 1607 1785 written by David Dobson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before 1650, only a few hundred Scots had trickled into the American colonies, but by the early 1770s the number had risen to 10,000 per year. A conservative estimate of the total number of Scots who settled in North America prior to 1785 is around 150,000. Who were these Scots? What did they do? Where did they settle? What factors motivated their emigration? Dobson's work, based on original research on both sides of the Atlantic, comprehensively identifies the Scottish contribution to the settlement of North America prior to 1785, with particular emphasis on the seventeenth century.

Book Early Journals and Letters of Fanny Burney Volume 1

Download or read book Early Journals and Letters of Fanny Burney Volume 1 written by Lars E. Troide and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1988-05-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One is the first of a projected twelve-volume edition of Burney's early journals and letters and covers the years 1768-73. This edition reproduces her earliest journals in their original form, replacing omitted and altered passages. It shows her development as an artist and contains typically vivid sketches of her family, friends, and acquaintances in London and the country. Further volumes will cover the so-called "Streatham Years" (1778-86, 4 vols.) and "Court Years" (1786-91, 6 vols.). These will carry her through the period of her greatest fame as the author of the novels Evelina (1778) and Cecilia (1782), and will end with her exit from the Court of King George III and Queen Charlotte after five exhausting years of service to the Queen as Second Keeper of the Robes. Eighteenth-century scholars generally regard Fanny's early journals as her freshest and most appealing. This edition complements Joyce Hemlow's Oxford edition of Burney's letters and journals from 1791 to 1840 (12 vols., Oxford, 1972-84). While the early journals have been printed before, Lars Troide's edition will provide the first full text of Fanny's early journals, accompanied by thorough and accurate annotations which fully explicate the context in which the journals were written.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hogg left a written record of three of his many journeys to the Highlands, those of 1802, 1803 and 1804, and in Highland Journeys he offers a thoughtful and deeply-felt response to the Highland Clearances. He gives vivid pictures of his experiences, including a narrow escape from a Navy press-gang, and a Sacrament day with one minister preaching in English and another in Gaelic. Hogg also explains aspects of Gaelic culture such as the waulking songs, and he describes the trade in kelp, lucrative to the landowners but back-breaking and ill-paid for the workers. Highland Journeys makes a refreshing contribution to our understanding of early nineteenth-century travel writing"--Publisher description.

Book Notable Encyclopedias of the Late Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Notable Encyclopedias of the Late Eighteenth Century written by Frank A. Kafker and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General encyclopedias illuminate the culture of an era; yet, except for the first edition of the Encyclop die, those launched from 1750 to 1800 have received far less attention than the novels, plays, poems, newspapers, and pamphlets of the period. This void in our knowledge is all the more regrettable since the compilation of encyclopedias thrived during the late eighteenth century. In the present work a group of scholars examine eleven notable general encyclopedias of the period, paying particular attention to their publishing history, editing, prose style, political and religious views, and contents as books of knowledge. Each of these works sheds light on a specific time and place as well as the encyclopedia genre. They were published in cities and towns in France, Switzerland, Italy, Scotland, England, the United States, Germany, and Russia, and they reveal much about the intellectual, religious, political, economic, and social life of their respective regions, as well as the extent of the reception and diffusion of the Enlightenment. The new information about these eleven encyclopedias provides the basis for an epilogue that discusses their relationship to Diderot and d'Alembert's renowned Encyclop die and the extent of that work's influence on the eighteenth-century encyclopedic tradition. This book is designed as a companion to Notable Encyclopedias of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: nine predecessors of the 'Encyclop die', edited by Frank A. Kafker, SVEC 194 (1981).
