Book excerpt: Professionals coming to remote Kimberley communities can find both the work and life environments very stressful. This research project interviewed five long-serving pastoral counsellers who have lived and worked with professionals in remote Aboriginal communities in the far north of Australia and investigated the self care strategies used by workers these counsellors have assisted. Using Grounded Theory anaylsis the interviews were synthesized to form a narrative image that suggested a possible self care strategy. The image that is used is that of a five link chain, each link representing a relationship, which carries the strain of and mitigates the effects of stress for the professional. The links represent the personal qualities of the professional, the environment, the collegial community of other professionals, prior relational networks and relations with the local community. Proper use of each relational link, without overstressing or under utilization, gives the professional living and working in a remote Kimberley community a sound self care strategy with which to handle the stress that comes with working in isolated, cross cultural situations.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was exploring what the roles and challenges of health care providers working within Northern Canadian Aboriginal communities are and what resources can help support or impede their efforts in working toward addressing health inequities within these communities. Within this research study, three significant findings emerged from the data. First, the Aboriginal person's identity was constructed in relation to the health care provider's role of delivering essential health services. Second, health care providers were not treating the “ill” patient, but rather treating the patient for being “ill.” Third, health care providers were treating the Aboriginal person for being “Aboriginal” by separating the patient from his or her identity. The treatment involved reforming the Aboriginal patient from the condition of being “Aboriginal.”
