Book Working Class Movement in India in the Wake of Globalization

Download or read book Working Class Movement in India in the Wake of Globalization written by Jose George and published by . This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the collapse of the erstwhile Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the East European communist bloc, capitalism abandoned its liberal programmes worldwide, and this brought about three-fourths of the worlds population at the mercy of the blind and ruthless forces of the market. In India too, the wave of liberalization under a new economic policy, which had been agreed upon and promoted by both the big political parties, i.e. Congress party and the Bharatiya Janata Party, put untold pressures, uncertainties and hardships on the toiling masses. Welfare schemes and subsidies to goods and services provided by the state were slowly withdrawn and the representative class of finance capital took a reactionary posture in political and social life. In India, the crisis at grass-roots' levels has led to a historical unity among trade unions affiliated with different political parties, and there is hope that they may join hands in the struggle for better living conditions. Against this backdrop, this book, which is an outcome of a national seminar, tries to understand and analyse the conditions of the working class people in India. Various dimensions of working class peoples life and politics have been deliberated here. Also, an attempt has been made to present a working class perspective on various economic and social issues of contemporary Indian society.

Book Indian Nationalists and the World Proletariat

Download or read book Indian Nationalists and the World Proletariat written by Horst Krüger and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This translation of Horst Krger's book in German brings to the English reading public a pioneer work on the relationship between the Indian National Movement and the World Working-Class Movement down to the outbreak of World War I. It is an important fact that the emergence of the Second International and the Indian National Congress were practically simultaneous and Krger studied in detail how the two streams came together. His detailed work deals frankly with the vision and the limitations on both sides. This is an area to which both historians of India's freedom struggle and of general labour history have not paid adequate attention, though the early Indian proximity to socialist thought and the importance of India for the consciences of early European socialists are important matters in their own right.

Book The Making of the Indian Working Class

Download or read book The Making of the Indian Working Class written by Vinay Bahl and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an insightful study of the forces that were responsible for the formation of the working class in India's large-scale steel industry during the colonial period and how those forces responded to the workers' struggles. Exploring the historical development of the workers' movement, including the active role played by women workers, in the Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO), Vinay Bahl challenges subaltern historiography which, she contends, focuses on a static model of working class culture in isolation. Dr. Bahl argues that culture is a social product and, therefore, cannot be the exclusive basis for understanding the struggles of the Indian working class. In order to fully comprehend the class consciousness of working women and men, it is necessary to examine all the forces - social, economic, political, historical, and cultural - that shaped them and their struggles against the capitalist class. This study is based on new research in archival materials available in India and the UK, including correspondence, minutes, and reports from steel company records, and interviews with steel workers and their leaders at Jamshedpur. Dr. Bahl challenges existing approaches to and provides a fresh perspective on questions related to India's industrialisation, the struggles of the Indian working class, and the shaping of their class consciousness under colonial rule. This book will be essential reading for those interested in industrial sociology, comparative labour history, colonial history, the history of trade unions, economics and business management, and development studies.

Book excerpt: Kashmir is one of the most protracted and bloody occupations in the world—and one of the most ignored. Under an Indian military rule that, at half a million strong, exceeds the total number of US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, freedom of speech is non-existent, and human- rights abuses and atrocities are routinely visited on its Muslim-majority population. In the last two decades alone, over seventy thousand people have died. Ignored by its own corrupt politicians, abandoned by Pakistan and the West, which refuses to bring pressure to bear on its regional ally, India, the Kashmiri people’s ongoing quest for justice and self- determination continues to be brutally suppressed. Exploring the causes and consequences of the occupation, Kashmir: The Case for Freedom is a passionate call for the end of occupation, and for the right of self- determination for the Kashmiri people.
