Download or read book Sulphur in Plants written by Y.P. Abrol and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sulphur (S) plays a pivotal role in various plant growth and development processes being a constituent of sulphur-containing amino acids, cysteine and methionine, and other metabolites viz., glutathione and phytochelatins, co-factor of enzymes which contribute to stress repair and amelioration of heavy metal toxicity. Besides, a number of S-containing components are biologically active and, thus, a source for use as medicinal value. The basic global issue before the agricultural scientist and world community is to evolve cultivars and develop methodologies for efficient use of inputs to enhance agricultural productivity. This is particularly true of the developing countries which are going to see maximum rise in population with changing food demands and declining availability of land. Amongst the inputs, nutrients play a crucial role. The major requirement is for N, P and K followed by several micro-nutrients. In this context reports of world-wide S deficiency in the agricultural systems are relevant. The reasons are many. Broadly speaking reduction inS emission, use of S-free N, P and K fertilizers and higher biomass production contributed the maximum. Despite the need for sulphur as an essential plant nutrient and the substantial returns expected from its use, very little attention has been given to fill the gap between supply and demand of S.

Book Phosphorus and Sulphur Fertilizer for Summer Soybean

Download or read book Phosphorus and Sulphur Fertilizer for Summer Soybean written by Heeralal Yadav and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] is considered to be a miracle crop because of its dual qualities viz., high protein content and oil. These two parameters in one crop have thus gained considerable importance in the agricultural economy of the World. It has high yield potential, wide adaptability, and short duration, very high nutritional value, having a vast multiplicity of uses as food and industrial products. Moreover, being a legume, the crop fix large amount of atmospheric nitrogen in soil. Phosphorus and sulphur play impotent role in crop production. Phosphorus for the soybean crop has long been recognized. Phosphorus is a key element in process of photosynthesis, root nodulation and for growth, yield and quality. Thus optimum supply of P is necessary for enhance the rate of protein synthesis in pulse crops. It increased seed yield and protein content of soybean. Sulphur as secondary plant nutrient is becoming increasingly important in agriculture as it is the "Master Nutrient" for all oilseed crops and pulses and is rightly being called the "Forth Major Plant Nutrient," along with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Book Performance of Soybean on Use of Various Nutrient Sources

Download or read book Performance of Soybean on Use of Various Nutrient Sources written by Jackson Abuli and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integration of legumes into farming systems is one of the Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) options for improving soil fertility. Farmers can save their cost of production by using legumes, which, in association with rhizobia, can fix atmospheric nitrogen. Soybean is an important legume compatible with the smallholder farming systems in many developing tropical countries. However, low P and N, a situation prevalent in many of these tropical regions can limit its performance. This book demonstrates results of a study carried out in Kigogo in Tharaka Nithi County and Kamujine in Meru County both in Kenya. Sources of P, with or without starter N application were evaluated while pursuing the following objectives: (1) to determine the effects of different phosphorus sources and starter N on soybean yield and selected soil chemical properties, (2) to evaluate the effects of different phosphorus sources and starter N on nodule numbers and soybean growth parameters. Finally, the study assessed the effects of different phosphorus sources and starter N on the amount of N fixed by soybean and their economic suitability.

Book Organic Fertilizers Influence the Rhizosphere Bacteria and Soybean Growth Under Heat and Water Stress

Download or read book Organic Fertilizers Influence the Rhizosphere Bacteria and Soybean Growth Under Heat and Water Stress written by Morgan McMillan and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Soybean responds to heat and water stress by producing ethylene, a plant growth hormone that reduces soybean biomass accumulation and shortens its lifespan. Soybean rhizosphere bacteria can degrade the precursors of growth-suppressing ethylene with the enzyme 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase (ACC deaminase). Greater ACC deaminase activity of soybean rhizosphere bacteria is expected when soybean grows in soil that receives a complete, nutrient-rich organic fertilizer than N fertilizer only. The objectives of this thesis were 1) to determine the morphological responses of organic-fertilized soybean plants exposed to heat and water stress, 2) to evaluate the ethylene production by soybean and the ACC deaminase activity of soybean rhizosphere bacteria in soil receiving organic fertilizer versus N fertilizer only and 3) to determine if fertilizer sources alter the composition of the soybean rhizosphere bacterial community. I hypothesized that soybean will accumulate more biomass and their rhizosphere bacteria will produce more ACC deaminase when soybean is fertilized with organic fertilizer than with N-only fertilizer, when soybean is exposed to heat or water stress. If the fertilizer source changed the ACC deaminase activity, then I expected to see differences in the composition of the rhizosphere bacterial community, as different taxa have different ACC deaminase production capacities. Soybean were grown in soil amended with organic fertilizer (biosolids, anaerobic digestate or compost) or N fertilizer for 9 wk in a greenhouse, and exposed to stress (no stress, heat stress, water stress or heat plus water stress) for 7 d. Then, I measured plant metabolic processes (photosynthetic efficiency, ethylene concentration), morphological variables and bacterial communities in the rhizosphere and bulk soil under soybean. As expected, soybean plants exposed to heat or water stress were taller and produced more aboveground biomass (p

Book Soil Management

Download or read book Soil Management written by Jerry L. Hatfield and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Degradation of soils continues at a pace that will eventually create a local, regional, or even global crisis when diminished soil resources collide with increasing climate variation. It's not too late to restore our soils to a more productive state by rediscovering the value of soil management, building on our well-established and ever-expanding scientific understanding of soils. Soil management concepts have been in place since the cultivation of crops, but we need to rediscover the principles that are linked together in effective soil management. This book is unique because of its treatment of soil management based on principles—the physical, chemical, and biological processes and how together they form the foundation for soil management processes that range from tillage to nutrient management. Whether new to soil science or needing a concise reference, readers will benefit from this book's ability to integrate the science of soils with management issues and long-term conservation efforts.

Book Fertilizer Application on Crop Yield

Download or read book Fertilizer Application on Crop Yield written by Jagadish Timsina and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fertilizer application can increase crop yields and improve global food security, and thus has the potential to eliminate hunger and poverty. However, excessive amounts of fertilizer application can contribute to groundwater pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, eutrophication, deposition and disruptions to natural ecosystems, and soil acidification over time. Small farmers in many countries think inorganic fertilizers are expensive and degrade soils, and thus policymakers want to promote organic instead of inorganic fertilizers. To develop practical fertilizer recommendations for farmers, yield responses to applied fertilizers from inorganic and organic sources, indigenous nutrient supply from soil, and nutrient use efficiency require consideration. There is a lack of sufficient scientific understanding regarding the need and benefit of integrated nutrient management (i.e., judicious use of inorganic and organic sources of nutrients) to meet the nutrient demand of high-yielding crops, increase yields and profits, and reduce soil and environmental degradation. Inadequate knowledge has constrained efforts to develop precision nutrient management recommendations that aim to rationalize input costs, increase yields and profits, and reduce environmental externalities. This Special Issue of the journal provided some evidence of the usefulness of integrated nutrient management to sustain soil resources and supply nutrients to crops grown with major cereal and legume crops in some developing countries.

Book Response of Soybean to Sulphur and Molybdenum Fertilization

Download or read book Response of Soybean to Sulphur and Molybdenum Fertilization written by Imlinukshi Kichu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soybean (Glycine max) is an important pulse crop besides being oilseed crop. It contains 5% lysine, which is deficient in most cereals and isoflavones, which helps in preventing heart diseases and cancer. In India soybean has established one of the major oilseed crops. In spite of high yield potential, it productivity is much less in India than the world average. The north-eastern region of India it is grown on slopes, jhum lands, terraces and plains. Cultivation of soybean on marginal land combined with sub optimal nutrients supply is the major hurdle in realising potential productivity. Sulphur is recognized as the fourth major nutrient in the order of importance to plant nutrition. It is required for the synthesis of sulphur-containing amino-acids cystine, cystein and methionine which are essential components of protein. Sulphur helps in nitrate reduction and assimilation of N by root nodule bacteria besides improving the yield. Molybdenum is another important nutrient for legumes, as it is essential for the activity of the enzyme nitrogenase, which helps in nitrogen fixation. It is also required for the reduction of nitrates for protein synthesis in all plants.

Book Effect of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers on Yield of Soybean

Download or read book Effect of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers on Yield of Soybean written by Vibeilie Mere and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) contains 40 - 42% protein and 20 - 22% oil and other nutrients like calcium, iron and glycine. It contains isoflavones, which helps in preventing heart diseases and cancer. In India soybean has established one of the major oilseed crops. In spite of high yield potential, it productivity is much less in India than the world average. The north-eastern region of India is one of the promising soybean growing belts, where crop is grown on slopes, jhum lands, terraces and plains. Cultivation of soybean on marginal land combined with sub optimal nutrients supply is the major hurdle in realising potential productivity. Farm yard manure is traditionally used for crop nutrition and its use in integrated approach reduces the dependence on chemical fertilizers. Integrating chemical fertilizers with organic manures has been found to be quite promising and maintaining higher productivity of soybean.

Book The Importance of Soil Organic Matter

Download or read book The Importance of Soil Organic Matter written by Alexandra Bot and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil organic matter - the product of on-site biological decomposition - affects the chemical and physical properties of the soil and its overall health. Its composition and breakdown rate affect: the soil structure and porosity; the water infiltration rate and moisture holding capacity of soils; the diversity and biological activity of soil organisms; and plant nutrient availability. This document concentrates on the organic matter dynamics of cropping soils and discusses the circumstances that deplete organic matter and their negative outcomes. It then moves on to more proactive solutions. It reviews a "basket" of practices in order to show how they can increase organic matter content and discusses the land and cropping benefits that then accrue.--Publisher's description.

Book A New Technology of Deep Placement of Slow Release Nitrogen Fertilizers for Promotion of Soybean Growth and Seed Yield

Download or read book A New Technology of Deep Placement of Slow Release Nitrogen Fertilizers for Promotion of Soybean Growth and Seed Yield written by Kaushal Tewari and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soybean seeds contain a large amount of protein (about 35%), and there is a significant correlation between the total amount of N accumulated in soybean plants and seed yield. Soybean utilises N from several sources, including mineralised soil organic matter, symbiotically fixed N, and N from fertiliser when applied. Soybean plants fix a large amount of N by root nodules symbiotically associated with soil bacteria called "rhizobia". However, sole N2 fixation is often insufficient to support the vigorous vegetative and reproductive growth of soybean plants. For the maximum yield of soybean, it is necessary to use both N2 fixation by root nodules and nitrogen absorption from roots. This book introduces the promotive effects of deep placement of slow release N fertilisers on growth, N2 fixation activity and seed yield of soybean cultivated in some rotated paddy fields of Niigata prefecture, Japan, including rotated paddy fields and upland fields.
