Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exciting Handbook offers a broad perspective on the intriguing phenomena of power, influence and politics in the modern workplace, their meaning for individuals, groups and other organizational stakeholders, and their effect on organizational outcomes and performances. The contributors illustrate the fact that organizational politics has many facets and definitions, all relating to the use of personal or aggregate power in influencing others and better achieving goals in the workplace. However, politics in organizations is difficult to study, as neither employees nor management are keen to divulge the political secrets and dynamics that help them to promote their own ideas and goals and to advance in the workplace. In the face of this challenge, the Handbook presents a comprehensive collection of original studies and theoretical discussions from across the globe. Providing a starting point for new research in the area, issues dealt with include: politics, personality and leadership ethics, fairness and prospects of trust in workplace politics organizational politics and employees well-being strategy, change and decision-making as a political process human resource management and consulting in a political sphere. Offering a fresh and up-to-date take on the topic, this highly original Handbook will be a fascinating read for academics, students and researchers in the fields of management and organizational behavior. The wide range of perspectives presented in this book, written by some of the leading scholars and researchers in the field, will also be invaluable to practitioners in management and to individuals in organizations who require a better understanding of the meaning of power and influence in the modern workplace.

Book Management Laureates

Download or read book Management Laureates written by Arthur G. Bedeian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1993. This volume compiles the autobiographies of the management discipline’s most distinguished laureates. Prior to this publication, the available management literature provided little insight into the personal and intellectual lives - the frustrations as well as the triumphs - of the individuals in the management discipline. Although such understanding could be conveyed in many forms, perhaps the most intimate and fascinating of these for gaining behind-the-scenes insights is the autobiography. Thus, the autobiographies in this volume, as in the five companion volumes, offer the reader not only a glimpse of the subjective determinants and personal experiences of the management discipline’s most distinguished laureates, but also a deeper understanding of what management is and what it is becoming. The various accounts reflect a diversity of approaches, interests, and experiences.

Download or read book Some Personality Determinants of the Effects of Participation written by Victor H. Vroom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1960, this study was carried out as part of the research of the Organizational Behavior and Human Relations Program of the Institute of Social Research. The primary purpose was to determine the effects of participation in decision-making on people with different personality characteristics. It was hypothesized that equalitarians and individuals with strong independence needs would be more positively affected by the opportunity to participate in making decisions than authoritarians and people with weaker independence needs. The results, based on data derived in an actual industrial setting, confirmed the hypothesis. The theoretical implications of the findings are discussed.

Book Psychology and Policing

Download or read book Psychology and Policing written by Neil Brewer and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychological theory and research have much to contribute to the knowledge and skill bases underlying effective policing. Much of the relevant information, however, is dispersed across a variety of different psychological and criminal justice/policing journals and seldom integrated for those applied psychologists interested in policing issues or for police policymakers/administrators and others working in the criminal justice area who are not familiar with the psychological literature. Designed to accommodate the needs of these different groups, this book addresses both operational policing issues and issues relevant to the improvement of organizational functioning by providing integrative reviews of psychological theory and research that deal with effective policing. It illustrates how the theory and research reviewed are relevant to specific policing practices. These include eyewitness testimony, conflict resolution, changing driver behavior, controlling criminal behavior, effective interviewing, and techniques of face reconstruction. The volume's readable style makes it accessible to a diverse audience including undergraduate and postgraduate students in forensic/organizational/applied psychology, criminal justice, and police science programs, and police administrators and policymakers. It will also interest psychologists whose primary focus includes policing and criminal justice issues. The book should draw attention to the often unrecognized and valuable contribution that mainstream psychology can make to the knowledge base underpinning a wide variety of policing practices.
