Book The History of the Drake Family and the Times They Lived

Download or read book The History of the Drake Family and the Times They Lived written by Terry W. Drake and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-29 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history takes factual information provided by encyclopedias and other historical documents. Other reference material includes birth certificates, death certificates and census data which support the factual basis of this history. The war records and military history of individuals and their family members were also used in the determination of their contributions to the society in which they lived. Other research material included Wikipedia, Ancetry.com, wikitree.com, genealogy.com family bibles and my many brothers and sisters. Two directions of ancestry history were investigated to gain the most effective approach to the design of this history. First the genealogy of Amye Grenville was traced to her origin of Charlemagne. Her marriage to John Drake VI allowed further investigation into his ancestry. Both were thoroughly pursued with vigor to determine their origins over the last 1300 years. The investigation provided by Earl Drake combined with my efforts has provided this history for your enjoyment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roger Drake Captain of Industry And some time, before long perhaps, the same knot of men I sat among to - night will talk about me, and much as they did of him. They will say that I quarrelled with my best friend and made war on him, and finally, after years, ruined him, and that is true, though not the whole truth. They may also say that I bought men's consciences; that I lied to men and cheated those who had put themselves in my hands; and those things, I thank God, are not true. But I will tell my own story. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calcutta, 1756. In Indian Black Town, the luminously beautiful Sati is believed to be possessed by the goddess Kali, and finds herself at the centre of a religious cult. In British White Town, Chief Magistrate Holwell and Governor Drake come together to face a common enemy – Siraj Uddaulah, the volatile young nawab in Murshidabad. When the nawab finally descends upon Calcutta with a huge army, it’s too late for those British residents who have not fled the city in time. Locked into Fort William with a large number of the Black Town population, these British prisoners spend a night of horror that would become legend of the history of the Raj. Lushly written and richly evocative, A Far Horizon is a sweeping chronicle of the notorious incident of the Black Hole of Calcutta that would later be used to justify the British empire’s colonisation of India.

Book It All Happened in Renfro Valley

Download or read book It All Happened in Renfro Valley written by Pete Stamper and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 1999 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Civil War halted steamboat travel on the Mississippi River in 1861, an unemployed riverboat pilot named Samuel Clemens enlisted in the Missouri militia. After two weeks of service, Clemens abandoned his post and fled westward to begin a writing careerÑa turn of events that precipitated the rise to fame of the man who would become known as Mark Twain. The circumstances surrounding his departure are unclear; some view Twain as a deserter, while others call into question the nature of his commitment from the beginning. Twain defended himself in speeches and in print, offering varying accountsÑwith varying degrees of truthÑof his confusion upon enrollment, his ignorance of the moral and political forces behind the war, and his claim to have killed a man while hiding in a corncrib. Regardless of the reason for his desertion, his personal experiences and the Civil War in general are recurring topics in TwainÕs speeches, fiction, and nonfiction. In addition to broaching the issue in longer works, such as Life on the Mississippi and The Gilded Age, Twain directly addresses it in shorter pieces such as ÒThe Private History of a Campaign That FailedÓ and ÒA Curious Experience.Ó Editor David Rachels unites these selections in Mark TwainÕs Civil War, offering Twain fans and Civil War scholars the unprecedented opportunity to read the entire array of TwainÕs Civil War-influenced literature in one volume. In addition to TwainÕs own pieces, Rachels includes an account of TwainÕs war career by his official biographer as well as a story by Absalom C. Grimes, a Confederate mail runner who claims to have served with Twain early in the war. An introduction by Rachels completes the text, which analyzes TwainÕs military stint and assesses the warÕs profound influence on one of AmericaÕs most celebrated authors.
