Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Albert Elsen was the first American scholar to study seriously the work of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, and the person most responsible for a revival of interest in the artist as a modern innovator--after years during which the sculpture had been dismissed as so much Victorian bathos. After a fortuitous meeting with the financier, philanthropist, and art collector B. Gerald Cantor, Elsen helped Cantor to build up a major collection of Rodin's work. A large part of this collection, consisting of more than 200 pieces, was donated to the Stanford Museum by Mr. Cantor, who died recently. In size it is surpassed only the by the Musée Rodin in Paris and rivaled only by the collection in Philadelphia. In scope the collection is unique in having been carefully selected to present a balanced view of Rodin's work throughout his life. Rodin's Art encompasses a lifetime's thoughts on Rodin's career, surveying the artist's accomplishments through the detailed discussion of each object in the collection. It will begin with essays on the formation of the collection, the reception of Rodin's work, and his casting techniques. The entries that follow are arranged topically and include extensive discussions of Rodin's major projects.

Book Rodin Sculpture from the Iris and B Gerald Cantor Collection

Download or read book Rodin Sculpture from the Iris and B Gerald Cantor Collection written by Kirk Varnedoe and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of the master French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is instantly recognizable throughout the world. This is due in no small part to the proselytizing efforts of B. Gerald Cantor (1916-1996), widely acknowledged as the preeminent collector and proponent of Rodin in America during the second half of the twentieth century. He purchased his first piece, a bronze of The Hand of God, in 1946, after being profoundly moved by seeing a marble version of it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. For five decades, Cantor focused all of his efforts on researching and acquiring works by Rodin. Joined by his wife, Iris, in 1977, they built the largest and most comprehensive private collection of Rodin sculpture, drawings, prints, photographs, and memorabilia. Of the approximately 750 works that the Cantors collected, including casts of each of Rodin's major monuments, The Monument to Balzac, The Gates of Hell, The Burghers of Calais, and The Monument to Victor Hugo, 450 have been given away to over 70 museums around the world. Lavishly illustrated, accompanying a worldwide touring exhibition, Rodin: A Magnificent Obsession chronicles the growth of the collection, offering a comprehensive overview that includes works bequeathed to the Cantor Foundation from the Cantor personal collection, as well as new insights into Rodin's working methods and the histories of his most famous masterpieces.

Download or read book The Passions of Jean Baptiste Carpeaux written by Draper, James David and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2014 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) was an extraordinarily gifted sculptor, the greatest in 19th-century France before Rodin, and embodied the emotionally charged artistic climate of his era ... Carpeaux's wrenching representations of human forms, shown in beautiful color details and illustrations, echo his turbulent personal life, fraught with episodes of violence and fatal illness. The book covers the entire span of Carpeaux's career, and includes the masterpiece Ugolino and His Sons, newly discovered drawings, and a number of rarely seen or studied works. Previously unpublished letters between Carpeaux and his family and friends, a wealth of archival material, and the most detailed chronology of the artist's life ever published."--Yale University Press website.

Download or read book European Sculpture 1400 1900 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art written by Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.) and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2011 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful book features masterpieces of sculpture in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum dating from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century. Celebrated works by the great European sculptors - including Luca and Andrea della Robbia, Juan Mart©Ưnez Monta©ł©♭s, Gianlorenzo Bernini, Jean-Antoine Houdon, Bertel Thorvaldsen, Antoine-Louis Barye, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Edgar Degas, and Auguste Rodin- are joined by striking new additions to the collection, notably Franz Xaver Messerschmidt's remarkable bust of a troubled and introspective man. The ninety-two selected examples are diverse in media (marble, bronze, wood, terracotta, and ivory) and size - ranging from a tiny oil lamp fantastically conceived and decorated by the Renaissance bronze sculptor Riccio to Antonio Canova's eight-foot-high Perseus with the Head of Medusa, executed in the heroic Neoclassical style. Incorporating information from the latest scholarly research and recent conservation studies, sculpture specialist Ian Wardropper discusses the history and significance of the highlighted works, each of which is reproduced with glorious new photography.

Book Design for the Corporate World 1950 1975

Download or read book Design for the Corporate World 1950 1975 written by Wim de Wit and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architectural, industrial, and graphic design in the United States from the 1950s through to the 1970s - generally known as mid-century modern - is now perceived as a golden era, with artists such as Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, and Eliot Noyes having become household names. This volume looks at the relationship between these designers and the companies who employed them, highlighting the political, social and cultural circumstances in which seminal design icons such as the Selectric Typewriter for IBM and the distinctive Westinghouse Electric Manufacturing Company logo were created. It reveals not only why corporations during this period needed designers more than ever before, but also why designers felt ambivalent about their work for these large businesses. In doing so, it sheds new light on the changing self-image of the designer and on these famous mid-century graphic, product, and furniture designs. 00Exhibition: Cantor Arts Center, Stanford, United States (26.04-21.08.2017).
