Book Postmodernism and Film

Download or read book Postmodernism and Film written by Catherine Constable and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on postmodern film aesthetics and contemporary challenges to the aesthetic paradigms dominating analyses of Hollywood cinema. It explores conceptions of the classical, modernist, post-classical/new Hollywood, and their construction as linear history of style in which postmodernism forms a debatable final act. This history is challenged by using Jean-François Lyotard's non-linear conception of postmodernism in order to view postmodern aesthetics as a paradigm that can occur across the history of Hollywood. This study also explores 'nihilistic' theorists of the postmodern, Jean Baudrillard and Frederic Jameson, and 'affirmative' theorists, notably Linda Hutcheon, charting the ways in which the latter provide the means to conceptualize nuanced and positive variants of postmodern aesthetics and deploying them in the analysis of Hollywood films, including Bombshell, Sherlock Junior, and Kill Bill.

Book excerpt: People Like Us is a photographic documentation of the tight-knit community of dedicated fans who perform in and produce weekly shows of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in theaters around the country, and who in doing so, have kept the film on screens in the pop-culture collective consciousness for forty years. These "shadow cast" performers spend countless hours on painstakingly accurate reproductions of their characters' costumes, special theme nights, set fabrication, and promotions. The film becomes an anchor for their world, with its gently satirical silver screen archetypes and saucy one-liners lending themselves to an abundance of internet memes and fan fiction.

Book Nothing that is

  • Author : Sarah Lynn Higley
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9780814330647
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Nothing that is written by Sarah Lynn Higley and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez's The Blair Witch Project seemingly appeared from nowhere to become one of 1999's highest grossing films. While generating revenue as a low budget movie backed by a media blitz, The Blair Witch Project also generated controversy and made a mockery of the Hollywood industry, billing itself as "real" footage of a supernatural event. Critics were divided over some of the most basic questions: whether the film was an artistic success or the product of its hype, for example, and whether it challenged Hollywood conventions or succumbed to them in the end. Nothing That Is: The Blair Witch Controversies examines these and other debates, and initiates some of its own about American taste for horror, hoax, independent films, the Internet, and the direction of cinema in the twenty-first century. The book explores the modest origins and rapid demise of this independent film- while also analyzing the sensational results of its broad media discourses--a Web site developing the back story of The Blair Witch Project was one of the most-accessed sites on the entire Internet at the time of the movie's release. These essays, from many diverse perspectives, also look at The Blair Witch Project's manipulation of cinematic codes, its view on technology and the occult, its film progenitors, and even its effects on the film's setting of Burkittsville, Maryland. Nothing That Is will interest both film scholars and fans of this unexpected blockbuster that emerged from, if not "nothing," a complex brew of culture, technology, and ingenuity.
