Book Rocks and Their Origins Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rocks and Their Origins Classic Reprint written by Grenville A. J. Cole and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rocks and Their Origins Rocktaluses, and all the varied alluvium carried seaward as the outcash of continental land, well deserve a chapter to themselves. But there is really no end to the subject, which embraces all the accumulative processes of the earth. A few vacation-journeys, judiciously planned out, teach us that text-books are merely signposts to set us on what is believed to be the way. When the path enters the great forest, or rises above green lakelets to the crags, we find there those who went before us, pointing to unconquered lands. Book The Natural History of Igneous Rocks Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural History of Igneous Rocks Classic Reprint written by Alfred Harker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Igneous Rocks The following page are, in substance, a course of lectures delivered at Cambridge; and, in offering them to a larger audience, the general plan of treatment has been retained. Igneous action and igneous rocks are first considered from a purely geological standpoint. In emphasizing this aspect, I have been influenced by a conviction that the subject has not yet been accorded its due place as an integral part of historical geology. The middle portion of the book deals with the crystallization of igneous rock-magmas, regarded as complex solutions. Although the subject is one which might be more skilfully handled by a professed chemist, a presentation of it as it appears to a petrologist may be not less useful to the student. I have in the main followed Professor Vogt, whose writings in the last few years have thrown so much light upon the matter. Some of the questions briefly and tentatively touched in the concluding chapters are of a more speculative character, but so fundamental in their scope that they could not be passed over in silence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rocks and Soils: Their Origin, Composition and Characteristics; Chemical, Geological and Agricultural Five years ago I was requested to prepare a course of instruction in chemical geology for students in one of the American agricultural colleges. Since then it has been my privilege to deliver a series of lectures on the subject to six consecutive classes, first at the Massachusetts Agricultural College, and later here in the Imperial College of Agriculture. When I entered into an engagement with the Japanese Government, the continuation of such instruction was stipulated as a part of my duty. These facts account for the compilation of the material here gathered. The reasons for now presenting the results to a larger audience are chiefly these: As the work has progressed, my students have repeatedly requested the preservation of the lectures in a more permanent and accessible form; while the magnitude of the field from which I have garnered, and the extremely scattered condition of the literature to which access was found necessary, have convinced me of the desirability of attempting to bring the materials together in a more readily accessible form, - an attempt not previously made, I believe. Hence the book must present some features peculiar to itself, and may, therefore, reasonably seek a favorable, or at least considerate, reception by those in whose interests it has been prepared. The nature of the work is such that I have no claim for the presentation of new material; I have neither theories nor opinions of my own to force upon the public. Such personal views as are offered are only expressed where such a course was deemed essential to a clear presentation of the facts recorded. Book The Deposits of the Useful Minerals and Rocks Vol 1 Of 3

This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Deposits of the Useful Minerals and Rocks, Vol. 1 of 3: Their Origin, Form, and Content The intention in making this translation was two-fold; firstly, to school myself in the matter of ore-deposition; and secondly, to place before British mining engineers and geologists an important work upon this subject, in a language with which, upon the whole, they would be better acquainted than with the original German. In the first part of this intention I feel I have succeeded. With regard to the second I trust that the realization will not fall too far short. I have endeavoured faithfully to bring out both the fact and the spirit of the author's work, this being of such high standard that the reception of a translation must depend largely upon the degree of closeness with which the original is approached. Book Introduction to the Study of Igneous Rocks Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to the Study of Igneous Rocks Classic Reprint written by George Irving Finlay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Igneous Rocks The plan of the present work is that of selecting from the large body of observed facts bearing on the identification of rocks with the microscope those which it is desirable for the beginner to get command of in the course of his early studies. The work is intended as an introduction to the exhaustive treatises on the subject. Inasmuch as the student invariably begins his laboratory work with the igneous rocks, these alone, with their constituent minerals, have been considered. Such a method of attack at once greatly limits the field on its mineralogical side, and permits of an extended treatment of determinative methods. In the discussion of the characteristics of a given rock-making mineral the aim has been to impart at the outset the most important diagnostic information regarding it. In the tables for desk use a fairly extended enumeration of the properties of the minerals of igneous rocks is given, but here also emphasis has been laid, by the use of bold face type, upon their more important characteristics from the point of view of the beginner who has to learn to identify them. The text dealing with the igneous type rocks is devoted entirely to setting forth the assemblages of facts of discriminative significance which are made use of in recognizing them in thin sections. Such a treatment can make no claim to completeness of exposition from the point of view of the geologist. The student will not, however, come to regard rocks merely as objects which can be classified by the recognition of their mineralogy and structures. It is believed that by emphasizing their differences the beginner can most quickly be put in possession of a knowledge of their complexity, and be led to take the interest in them which the petrologist must feel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pocket Dictionary of Common Rocks and Rock Minerals The generous reception given the Pocket Dictionary has made it necessary to issue a new edition within a few months. N 0 change has been made in the plan of the booklet, and but little in the text. Some errors have been corrected and a number of definitions added which the use of the little book has shown to be needed. In several instances the names of minerals by no means common in the country have been introduced because they are of economic importance in North Carolina, and the Dictionary was prepared primarily for my own pupils. Book The Deposits of the Useful Minerals Rocks Vol 2

Download or read book The Deposits of the Useful Minerals Rocks Vol 2 written by F. Beyschlag and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Deposits of the Useful Minerals Rocks, Vol. 2: Their Origin, Form, and Content I have gratefully to acknowledge the several helpful reviews upon Vol. I. Of this translation. It has been suggested 1 that it would have been better not to have used eruptive as synonymous with igneous, but rather with volcanic. That is a suggestion which many would urge. The authors, however, whose views I am representing, actually use eruptive. Moreover, this term, in association with sedimentary as counterpart, is common among both British and American authorities. Geikie, for instance, in his text-book of Geology' gives eruptive undoubted preference over igneous, and, accord ing to him,2 the eruptive rocks include both the plutonic and the volcanic. It appeared to me also that in, discussing ore-deposits the term eruptive assisted in conveying the idea of the part played by material coming upwards through the crust. The term sedimentary, its counter part, similarly conveyed the idea of settlement upon the crust. In these two words we therefore have the magmatic and meteoric sources of ore deposits suggested. The term igneous, properly speaking, should have aqueous for counterpart, these two terms suggesting the elements fire and water respectively, a suggestion less pertinent than the one above. F. L. Ransome regrets the confusion in the English and American terms for the principal oxidized zinc ores. To avoid this confusion I have adopted a suggestion by Prof. Cullis, and described these ores as zinc carbonate and zinc hydrosilicate respectively, and the mixture of the two as zinc oxidized ore. Book The Elements of Geology Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Elements of Geology Classic Reprint written by William Harmon Norton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Geology Geology deals with the rocks of the earth's crust. It learns from their composition and structure how the rocks were made and how they have been modified. It ascertains how they have been brought to their present places and wrought to their vari ous topographic forms, such as hills and valleys, plains and mountains. It studies the vestiges which the rocks preserve of ancient organisms which once inhabited our planet. Geology is the history of the earth and its inhabitants, as read in the rocks of the earth's crust. To obtain a general idea of the nature and method of our science before beginning its study in detail, we may visit some valley, such as that illustrated in the frontispiece, on whose sides are rocky ledges. Here the rocks lie in horizontal layers. Although only their edges are exposed, we may infer that these layers run into the upland on either side and underlie the entire district; they are part of the foundation of solid rock which everywhere is found beneath the loose materials of the surface.
