Book Nueltin Granites and Mafic Rocks in the Tebesjuak Lake Map Area Nunavut

Download or read book Nueltin Granites and Mafic Rocks in the Tebesjuak Lake Map Area Nunavut written by Tony D. Peterson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tebesjuak Lake map area (NTS 65O), in Nunavut, is underlain by extensive intrusive and extrusive rocks of the Kivalliq Igneous Suite (Wharton Group, Nueltin Granite, and various mafic rocks). Spanning an age range of 1.74-1.77 billion years, these rocks are part of a broad anorogenic event that occurred throughout a large part of the western Churchill province. New geochemical, petrological, and geophysical data acquired during the GEM1-U project has now accurately established space-time trends in magma composition, the physical form of an important bimodal intrusion, and the relationship of Kivalliq rocks to some mineral showings in the map area.

Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2004 C5

Download or read book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2004 C5 written by S. Connell-Madore and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2004 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrical resistivity measurements previously made on graphitic shale samples from the Astarte River Formation on Baffin Island indicate that they display weak to strong anisotropic characteristics, with low and high resistivities in the directions parallel & perpendicular to foliation respectively. The purpose of the study described in this paper is to determine the electrical conductivity mechanisms that resulted in those characteristics. Study methods included electrical resistivity and porosity measurements, graphite thin-section analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Resistivity-related factors examined in the study include pore-fluid connectivity, the presence of graphite, and the insulating quality of quartz grain layers.

Book excerpt: The areas described in this report encompass several northeast-trending Precambrian supracrustal belts set in a granitoid terrane of the Churchill structural province near the base of the Boothia Peninsula, Nunavut. After an introduction on the study area and previous research, descriptions are provided of the area's Archean granitoid complex, Archean and Proterozoic supracrustal rocks, their lithology, contact relations, age & correlation; associated intrusions (pegmatite, diabase dykes); metamorphism; structural geology; and mineral occurrences worthy of further exploration. The appendix contains tables of results of mineral & rock analyses.

Book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2004 C6

Download or read book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2004 C6 written by S. Connell-Madore and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2004 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to document results of the determination of electrical resistivity characteristics of schist samples from the Gold Lake area of the Yellowknife mining district, Northwest Territories, for use in interpreting ground electromagnetic surveys that have been conducted in that region. Results are presented from investigations of electrical conductivity mechanisms determined for five sub-samples taken from two mineralized schist samples selected to characterize the resistivity of the alteration zone and to determine the effect of cross-cutting veins & of fine-grained sulphide minerals oriented parallel to foliation. Resistivity-related factors examined in the study include sulphide grain connectivity, the insulating quality of quartz & calcite grain layers, and pore-fluid connectivity.

Book A Place called Nunavut

Download or read book A Place called Nunavut written by Kim van Dam and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2008-12-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, Nunavut Territory was created in the Canadian Arctic. The area is about 50 times as large as the Netherlands, and is inhabited by a population of 30,000. 85% of the population is Inuit, the indigenous people in this area. The central questions in this research project are what place or regional identities are being ascribed to Nunavut by different groups of people from within and from outside the region, and how do these identities work? In the process of the formation of the region, the territorial Government of Nunavut is an important actor in producing a regional identity that is based on the cultural identity of the Inuit: the Inuit Homeland. This 'official' regional identity creates a symbolic unity that is important in linking people to the region, and through which the land, the history and the people are united in a new territorial membership. However, there is no reason to assume that there is only one regional identity for Nunavut. Different individuals or groups of people from within and from outside the region, such as the people who live in one of the 25 communities and those who work for the multinational mining corporations or as tourist operators, are also involved in the production and reproduction of identities for Nunavut. They represent Nunavut for example as a place to live, a resource region, a wilderness or as a sustainable place. Nunavut Government also links these alternative identities to the area, because as a government they are not only interested in protecting Inuit culture but also aim to modernize the economy in order to enhance prosperity and well-being. As such the place identities are hybrid, and identities that before were produced only by external actors are now also being produced by internal actors, and vice versa.
