Book excerpt: Since vampires have emerged and established their place in the world, I am no longer required to slay them and so I had to figure out some use for my super-powers. Super-heroes are overrated, so I nixed the idea of using my strength and stuff. In any case I may be able to go toe-to-toe with a vampire but full-fairies are another story. Finally, night after night of standing behind my boss, the Vampire King of New York, it clicked that I could become a Rock Star! It made perfect sense! I’m super-pretty because I am the only half-fairy in the world. I’m flexible, I love to dance, and most important of all I can sing. Therefore, I just had to figure out a way to the top? Well, I found it at Barck****. (Legal restrictions mean I can’t disclose the exact location.) And at Barck****, I made a Were friend named Zan****. (Because of the legalities involved, I can’t state his name either, so we’ll just call him Fuzzy!) Now, as luck would have it, Fuzzy happened to be an old-blood shape-shifter, who had ties that ran deep, and as soon as he heard of my supernatural existence he straightway thought I would be a great spokesperson for the Shifter community when they made themselves known. Shifter existence was still hidden at this time, but Fuzzy said that in this day and age the truth about them was bound to come out sooner or later. So the cogs in my head started turning. Hey, I thought, I have brilliant ideas all the time, not to mention good contacts up the ying-yang from working for the Vampire King. Consequently, I laid out my ambitions to Fuzzy and he loved them and offered to help. All of which meant that I had a Coming Out Concert at the Radio City Music Hall, the whole of which was broadcast throughout the entire U.S. And that is how I became a Rock Star!

Book excerpt: A Rolling Stone-Kirkus Best Music Book of 2020 The definitive account of pop music in the mid-eighties, from Prince and Madonna to the underground hip-hop, indie rock, and club scenes Everybody knows the hits of 1984 - pop music's greatest year. From "Thriller" to "Purple Rain," "Hello" to "Against All Odds," "What's Love Got to Do with It" to "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," these iconic songs continue to dominate advertising, karaoke nights, and the soundtracks for film classics (Boogie Nights) and TV hits (Stranger Things). But the story of that thrilling, turbulent time, an era when Top 40 radio was both the leading edge of popular culture and a moral battleground, has never been told with the full detail it deserves - until now. Can't Slow Down is the definitive portrait of the exploding world of mid-eighties pop and the time it defined, from Cold War anxiety to the home-computer revolution. Big acts like Michael Jackson (Thriller), Prince (Purple Rain), Madonna (Like a Virgin), Bruce Springsteen (Born in the U.S.A.), and George Michael (Wham!'s Make It Big) rubbed shoulders with the stars of the fermenting scenes of hip-hop, indie rock, and club music. Rigorously researched, mapping the entire terrain of American pop, with crucial side trips to the UK and Jamaica, from the biz to the stars to the upstarts and beyond, Can't Slow Down is a vivid journey to the very moment when pop was remaking itself, and the culture at large - one hit at a time.

Book The Civil Rights Reader

Download or read book The Civil Rights Reader written by Julie Buckner Armstrong and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology of drama, essays, fiction, and poetry presents a thoughtful, classroom-tested selection of the best literature for learning about the long civil rights movement. Unique in its focus on creative writing, the volume also ranges beyond a familiar 1954-68 chronology to include works from the 1890s to the present. The civil rights movement was a complex, ongoing process of defining national values such as freedom, justice, and equality. In ways that historical documents cannot, these collected writings show how Americans negotiated this process--politically, philosophically, emotionally, spiritually, and creatively. Gathered here are works by some of the most influential writers to engage issues of race and social justice in America, including James Baldwin, Flannery O'Connor, Amiri Baraka, and Nikki Giovanni. The volume begins with works from the post-Reconstruction period when racial segregation became legally sanctioned and institutionalized. This section, titled "The Rise of Jim Crow," spans the period from Frances E. W. Harper's Iola Leroy to Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. In the second section, "The Fall of Jim Crow," Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail" and a chapter from The Autobiography of Malcolm X appear alongside poems by Robert Hayden, June Jordan, and others who responded to these key figures and to the events of the time. "Reflections and Continuing Struggles," the last section, includes works by such current authors as Rita Dove, Anthony Grooms, and Patricia J. Williams. These diverse perspectives on the struggle for civil rights can promote the kinds of conversations that we, as a nation, still need to initiate.
